The Knight's Mysterious Maid -
Chapter 164: Love (2)
Chapter 164: Love (2)
Annalise lowered her head as she walked out of the room to avoid Beatrice’s curious gaze. She knew what Beatrice must be thinking and she was thankful for Rafael sending her out before anything could be said.
Beatrice waited for Annalise to be out of the room and let River step inside before closing the door. She folded her arms, watching her son who went back to eating. "Do not act like this is normal, Rafael. Your father and I came to visit you only to hear you were still in your room. With Annalise!"
"Quiet down, mother. She is just my personal maid. She comes here every morning to serve me," Rafael answered, refusing to look up. He would like to just eat to avoid answering his mother’s questions.
"I have not forgotten that she is your maid, but what I find odd is the two of you sitting together eating breakfast in your bedroom. You were never like this," Beatrice said, feeling what she sensed the last time the two of them were at her home was correct.
"I have eaten among servants-"
"Do not take your mother for a fool, Rafael. This bedroom is your private space. You have always preferred that the servants come in to clean and get out right away. Edwin and Mavis are the only ones to spend a lot of time here and yet, Annalise was in here enjoying breakfast with you. Tell me, do you love her?" Beatrice asked, getting her hopes up that the time for a wedding was near.
"I do not," Rafael replied. His interests in her were far from love. Asking if he liked her would have a different answer.
Beatrice stared at Rafael’s face to read it for any lies. "River, your son is lying to me again."
"Why is he only my son whenever you think he is doing something wrong?" River asked, standing behind Beatrice to look at the food on Rafael’s bed. It was also strange for him to see Rafael be so welcoming to have the maid in his bedroom.
"Because it could only be you he gets that behaviour from. I have taught him never to lie to me," Beatrice explained.
"I did not lie to you. I do not love her," Rafael answered again.
"Then let me change that. Are there any kind of feelings for her?" Beatrice asked.
"There is," Rafael honestly replied. "But you must not say a word. She is my maid."
Beatrice folded her lips as she silently clapped her hands, not making any noise as her hands touched.
Rafael sighed, knowing this would not easily go away. "Do not speak of marriage, mother."
"That is not what I wish to talk about now. The wedding can wait. I am overjoyed to see you showing interest in a woman again. I was starting to think there was no woman in this town to make you think about something other than swords."
"It is unfortunate that she is your maid. I know how you are with not wanting to have that kind of relationship with your servants," Beatrice said, taking a seat on the bed to think about where they would go from here.
Rafael looked at his father and then back at his mother. "Are you truly not going to tell me about weddings and whatever else is on your mind?" He asked.
"You have asked for your breakfast to be served in your bedroom and you were eating alone with her. I don’t need to speak about marriage now. Though I will not have you courting her if marriage is not on your mind. Do not waste her time Rafael. Do not fill her head with hope only to let her down in the future. I have raised you better than that," Beatrice said, pointing a finger at him as a warning.
She liked Annalise and if this was just Rafael being attracted to Annalise and nothing more, she wanted this to end now.
"I don’t plan to do anything with her. Our relationship will remain as it is now with me as her employer. I will not tell her of my feelings and neither will you. Edgar is getting married," Rafael said, using Edgar as a distraction.
Beatrice chuckled, not believing Rafael’s words. "Did you really think you could fool me with that?" She asked, tapping his leg as a punishment for lying to her twice.
"I am not lying to you. He sent me a letter saying that he would be getting married to the baron’s daughter. You will have a wedding to attend. He has not sent me an invitation so that I know what day I might need to leave-"
"You are lying!" Beatrice raised her voice, not believing that Edgar was getting married before Rafael. She always thought that she could get Rafael to marry faster than Priscilla Collins could get her son to marry.
"You are not," Beatrice muttered after Rafael did not smile or say that he was just fooling her. "Was it his mother’s doing? I should write to her."
"You have always said you do not like her," River said, not understanding why there was a sudden interest in Priscilla now.
"She has gotten Edgar of all people to marry so I can push aside my opinions to get some advice from her. Are you certain he is getting married?" Beatrice asked, still in disbelief.
"For the last time, he is. Knowing Edgar, his mother had nothing to do with his engagement. Just leave me alone and I will take care of my future. Do not meddle. I do not want to chase her away. Promise me," Rafael said, holding out his hand for his mother to shake.
Beatrice playfully smacked his hand away. "I do not need to promise you. I like the woman you have feelings for and I am happy to see you liking someone. I won’t meddle in your relationship or say something to her."
"Just know that if something blossoms between the two of you, I accept her. You must bring her over for a proper meal the day your relationship changes. This is exciting," she said, clapping her hands once more.
Beatrice knew it wouldn’t be long before Annalise would also have feelings for her son. Why wouldn’t Annalise come to love the wonderful young man she raised? It would be impossible for any woman to not love her son.
"Why are the two of you here? Did that man do something again?" Rafael asked, referring to his uncle.
"No," Beatrice replied, standing up from the bed as it was time to leave. "I just wanted to visit you to see how you were doing, but it is time for us to leave. We have to tend to our garden so you can call Annalise back inside to finish eating before the food goes cold."
Rafael did not want the two of them to leave yet now that they were here. He would rather have his mother close by to see that she was no longer triggered by her brother being here in town. "You can stay-"
"No no. We must go," Beatrice said, tugging on River’s arm to make him leave with her.
River did not budge. He had not left the comfort of his home to visit Rafael and not see how his son was fairing just because Beatrice learned he liked his maid. "You have been questioning me about how Rafael is doing all night long. We are leaving yet. Besides, don’t you want to keep an eye on the woman our son is acting strangely for?"
"Do not encourage her," Rafael sighed.
