Chapter 163: Love (1)

"Why are we doing this again?" Annalise questioned, looking at the tray of food placed on Rafael’s bed. "And why do you insist on eating on the bed when there is a table here in the room? You might spill something on the sheet."

’Then you need to be careful," Rafael replied, putting together a plate of food for her.

"I ate more than bread this morning. You do not need to do this," Annalise said, wanting him to stop.

Doing it once had given her the energy she needed, but she could not continue to eat the breakfast meant for him. The more she ate, the more there was a risk of her getting caught.

"There is a big table down in the dining room for you to eat. We can have your food spread out and you won’t need to worry about spilling something. Let me," Annalise said, holding the tray to take it up, but Rafael held onto it.

"I am going to eat here from now on. I am the only one sitting at the table downstairs and breakfast is quiet. You will not talk to me with Mavis around so I will eat here. It is quite boring when breakfast is quiet," Rafael said, pulling the tray back toward him.

"I don’t understand. You seem to enjoy being alone. I didn’t think you would want to be bothered with having someone around at breakfast or dinner," Annalise replied, letting go of the tray to let him continue.

"There is a difference between not wanting to be annoyed in the morning and enjoying having a good conversation with someone. If I wanted to be annoyed, I’d eat with the knights. I chose to eat alone in silence because there was no one to speak to. The servants will freeze up and guests are a pain in the ass."

"I used to like breakfast with my mother before I was of age to get married. We would always talk about what we were going to do for the day," Rafael said.

"Hmm," Annalise responded, looking off to the side. "You truly are a mother’s boy. Another reason why the women flock to you."

"And why is that?"

"Well, I have heard that if a man treats his mother right he will do the same to his wife. I personally do not believe it, but I suppose it would make you dreamy amongst the young women. A man will be kind to his mother who has given him life. He might not see his wife being owed such kindness, but whatever to get the young ladies looking to marry excited," Annalise replied, shrugging her shoulders.

Rafael smiled as he placed the fruit on her plate. "You do not seem to be someone who enjoys romance."

"That is not true. I like it a lot, but not the sappy kind. The one where women’s heads are filled with these stories about men to make them think the smallest thing a man does is out of this world. Young ladies are sent a flower and their hearts just melt. I do not want to be sent a flower. It is the same gesture used over and over again to win hearts. I prefer something more exciting," Annalise said, thinking of the best way a man could win her heart.

"A sword seems more fitting for you or maybe someone stealing my armour so you could wear it. I remember that you do not like flowers because they make you itch," Rafael said as he handed her the plate he prepared for her.

"Honestly, I might consider marrying the man who kills that chicken that was being a pain to put away. Kill it and slowly roast it over a fire for the others to see. Then we’ll see if they want to keep running away from me," Annalise chuckled, imagining how obedient they would be afterwards.

Rafael dared not question what was going on in her mind while she smiled. Courting her sounded like no easy task.

"Please leave my chickens alone," Rafael begged her.

"It is them who picked a fight with me first. The ones who obey me will get to live another day. Those who try to fight me when I walk by should fear something creeping into their nests while they sleep. I am joking," Annalise said, holding up her hands as if he were pointing a sword at her.

"I have gotten used to your strange ways now so I know that it is a joke. It just surprises me," Rafael muttered, pouring himself coffee so he could get a good start on the day and listening to Annalise.

Annalise denied the food at first, but seeing the sweet jam on top of a pastry, she couldn’t help herself to not pick it up and give it a taste. It would be wrong to let the food be wasted.

Rafael drank his coffee and silently watched Annalise eat the pastry he placed for her. It was odd how food, sword fighting, and making life hell for his chickens excited her. If he were to seriously court her, was he to have a feast prepared for her, try taking her life to excite her, or stand before her with a dead chicken?

He was so used to just picking out a necklace and giving it to the woman he was spending time with. Their eyes lit up and they would never say no to the gift since there was a good price to it. There was some luck that she hated being given flowers so he would not consider it. He feared not knowing which flower made her skin itch would lead to him bringing it to her.

A knock at the door caused Annalise to almost choke on the last of the pastry. She covered her mouth and looked at Rafael with wide eyes, scared that it might be Mavis.

Rafael, on the other hand, was calm because he did not see what the big issue was. The door would not open without his permission. "You should calm down before you choke."

Annalise stood up and wiped her mouth with the back of her hand to get rid of any traces of the jam she had eaten. She was not going to take any chances of being found helping him eat his breakfast. "I told you that I am not to eat your food."

Rafael still did not see what the big issue was. It was not like they had woken up, tangled up in each other after a night of sex, realising that Annalise was still in his bedroom and there was someone at the door. It was only food.

Rafael frowned as a pretty nice picture of Annalise lying on the other side of his bed filled his mind. With her hair sprawled across the sheet. He put down his coffee and for the first time, he would rather have something strong to go along with breakfast.

"Rafael darling," Beatrice said as she opened the door. She grew tired of waiting for him to answer her knock.

She found it odd when Edwin told her Rafael was having breakfast in his bedroom and she found it strange that Annalise was also inside with him.

Beatrice held onto the door so that it would not close on River who was yet to enter. She inspected Annalise trying her best to hide that she was chewing something and then she trailed down to the plate that was near where Annalise stood. "You-"

"Leave us, Annalise," Rafael said, beating his mother to having the first word out. He needed Annalise to get far away from here before his mother could say too much.
