Chapter 153: [Bonus Chapter] Death wish (2)

"There have been requests for you to join us at the border, but we have yet to hear a response from you and many of the other knights. Do you not want this war to be over with?" Asked Claude, one of the three guards who came to visit Rafael.

"Am I to always finish the fights I am assigned to and then clean up what you fail to do? My knights need to rest. The guards at the border have enough resources and men to deal with what the king has tasked you to do," Rafael answered.

The answer would always be no to having his knights pack up to head back to the border after the long journey they just returned from. They also had other battles to take care of for the kingdom and Rafael was not going to overwork his men. There were plenty of other people the border could call upon for help.

"I always get the feeling that you and everyone else look down on us since the war at the border is not yet over. Keep in mind that it has been going on for over a hundred years. We are trying to continue what others failed to do for years. If all the knights and the king’s army come together to help fight those people, it would be over with, but you continue to be against aiding us," said Ethan, another one of the border guards.

Rafael rested his head on his knuckle as he propped himself up with his hand. "Did the three of you come to my manor to pick a fight with me? It is not my fault that you are so incompetent to come up with ways to have the advantage in your fight. I know that you have been sending men with little to no training to fight. And you wonder why you have been losing."

"Those are men who volunteered to help protect their mother and sisters-"

"You need to fucking train them before you send them out to fight experienced warriors," Rafael snapped, tired of them pretending their methods made sense.

A knock at the door disrupted the conversation.

"Come in," Rafael said out loud for Annalise to hear. He needed the arrival to keep him calm. His blood would always boil with anger whenever the border guards were near.

Rafael kept his eyes on the door, watching Annalise enter behind another maid.

The two women entered the room with a forced smile to please the guests. One smile appeared to be sweet while the other started to crack as the young woman could not keep it up for so long.

Tanya smiled sweetly at the men in the room who might stay at the manor for more than a day so she wished to be placed to serve one of them. Guards who were away at the border always treated her to gifts since they longed to have a pretty woman around them. Mavis was kind enough to pick her to serve them today.

Annalise, on the other hand, tried to get rid of the aching feeling in the corner of her mouth because of her smile. While Tanya went to Rafael’s guest to offer them wine which came from Rafael’s storage, Annalise went to Rafael’s side to serve him first.

"There is a lot of wine and alcohol, but I have brought you juice just in case," she said as she placed her tray down on the small table added to his study for this occasion.

Marcellus, the third guard who had been silently listening to the conversation, stared at the maid beside Rafael.

"Marcellos, it is not right to stare at a woman. You might make them uncomfortable," Claude said, nudging his companion to look away from the maid. "But I must say this one is a beauty. While we have to be at the border dealing with those savages, you get to be here surrounded by women. It is no wonder you don’t want to leave. I would not want to leave either."

Annalise froze at the mention of savages, but she was quick to continue setting up the table to not let it show that she was angry with what the man said. The only savages here were people like him. She got the same nasty feeling from this man as she did with Connor. What was it with the men whose names began with C? Christian was also on her list.

"Watch your mouth," Rafael warned.

"About the maid or the savages? Rumours have started to go around that the reason you don’t want to join is that you are scared to face those animals. I have seen a few to tell you that I understand why some might be afraid of them. Uncivilised bastards," Claude spat, disgusted by those people.

He suggested setting more of their fields on fire to make them come running out to be slaughtered, but his idea was not yet approved to be started. As soon as it was, he would lead his group to set fire to the fields and any vegetation they survived on.

"What would you like to drink?" Annalise asked Rafael so she could distract herself from the fool talking. He gave himself a death wish without realising it.

"The juice," Rafael replied, avoiding looking at her so none of the men would comment on it. "They are not savages."

Annalise paused once more before she started to pour Rafael’s juice. As commander, she expected him to share the same opinion as everyone else about her people. She poured the juice, patiently waiting for what Rafael would say.

"We should not be speaking about this around maids," Marcellus said, still keeping his eyes on Annalise. She gave him a weird feeling and just looking at her, she seemed out of place compared to the other maid in the room.

It could be because she was keeping to herself unlike the other maid trying too much to get their attention. Whatever the feeling was, he did not like it. He always trusted his gut and it helped keep him alive this far.

"These are maids in Rafael’s manor. They have been trained and warned not to repeat anything they hear unless they want to die. Besides, it is not like we are talking about secret information. Everyone knows we have been trying to get Rafael to help us," Ethan spoke and then took a sip of the wine Tanya poured for him.

He did not see why they were still speaking about the border when beautiful women were in the room. He was yet to visit the red light district to enjoy being with a woman. He was tired of seeing men and listening to talk about a war that the king should end himself.

Ethan thought of breaking his arm so he would not have to return to the border and deal with the barbarians.

"I will say the glances of the women from the barbarian’s side are beautiful. The promises of killing the men and taking the women help to get the men excited. The red light districts will have a new addition to their services when we are finished. If you join us, you can take the first pick," Ethan offered.

Annalise handed Rafael his drink and stepped back to get out of the way. She could not react when she so desperately wanted to slice his neck and hang his body from a tree.
