The Knight's Mysterious Maid -
Chapter 152: Death wish (1)
Chapter 152: Death wish (1)
Annalise leaned against a wall outside the manor trying to calm her anger toward Logan. She was yet to connect how him seeing her in a bush looking for snakes had led to him liking her. So many things did the opposite of what she wanted and when she wasn’t trying to do it.
Annalise could only hope that he would snap out of the little fantasy romance he created between them or she would find a good rock to help him forget all about it.
Her days would not be peaceful if Logan kept seeking her out, trying to make her like him. It wasn’t going to happen even if they were the last two people in the world. She would kill him so she would be the only person left alive.
Annalise used her shoe to play with the long grass that was yet to be cut by the gardener. Her mind could not move away from her spar against Rafael. It was exciting and she wished to do it again, but this time, without her father being brought up. There were only so many lies she could create and keep up with.
’I should tell Thomas that I sparred with Rafael and watch him freak out,’ she smiled.
One thing she enjoyed was seeing Thomas lose his mind. He acted like a mother hen often when it came to her.
Annalise looked up, knowing those familiar footsteps coming her way. She pushed herself off the wall and held out Rafael’s helmet to him. "I’ve wiped it off, but I can get a piece of cloth to shine it," she said.
"There is no need for that," Rafael answered, taking the helmet from her. "I will call a draw on our little fight."
Annalise frowned. "But you clearly won."
"I don’t consider it a win when my opponent gave up when she had a good chance of winning. I don’t know why you acted like you lost, but I will not accept the win. You are not to go down by the river alone and I will owe you a favour in the future. Agreed?" Rafael questioned, holding out his hand for her to shake on it.
Annalise stared at his hand. He could’ve just taken the win and teased her about winning. She didn’t think he would notice that she gave up on purpose. He kept surprising her with how honestly he responded to situations like this. "Deal," Annalise said, shaking his hand.
A favour from Rafael might help her out in the future. It didn’t matter that he was stacking up favours she owed him.
"I think you might have some guests at your gates. I heard Mavis running around asking where you are so I hide here because of the helmet," Annalise said.
"You could have just said that I asked you to return this helmet to my bedroom."
"It sounds simple but the things I do have a way of blowing up in my face so I rather hide and give you back your helmet. Since you don’t give your helmet to just anyone, it might cause Mavis to panic seeing me carry it around. She will worry that I might drop it though it isn’t fragile. If it was, you would be dead when you fight your enemies," Annalise said, tapping the metal in his hands.
"Even if the metal was of bad quality, someone would need to land a hit on me-"
"Your cockiness makes me regret not trying to hit you a bit more. I landed a hit on you. Do not be surprised if others start to talk about it in the future. I might tell my children that I managed to strike the commander of knights so I seem cool in front of them. I will apologise now for ruining your perfect not getting hit by anyone score. You cannot deny it since you have called it a draw," Annalise said.
"Sir Rafael!" Mavis’s high-pitched voice interrupted the moment. She picked up her dress and ran to where Rafael stood. "There are guards from the border who have stopped by to have a word with you. We need your permission to let them in the gates. What is your order?"
"Allow them," Rafael answered though he wasn’t in the mood to entertain them right now.
The letters from the border were arriving slowly because of the great distance. It wasn’t unusual for some border guards to make their way to his manor before they either headed back to the border or wherever they were relocated to.
"I will go to the kitchen and get drinks prepared for your guests," Annalise said before Mavis could order her to.
Mavis nodded her head, impressed with Annalise’s quickness. "Have Edwin bring out a few bottles from storage and the cook prepare-"
"They won’t need food. I don’t plan on keeping them here that long. Just drinks will suffice for now. Send a maid to deliver the message to the gates to let them in and then sit down somewhere, Mavis. You look like you have been overworking yourself. Excuse me," Rafael said, leaving the two alone so could open his study to his guests.
Mavis patted her hair and ran her fingers through it in case her running had made it out of place. "You will be serving Rafael and his important guests along with another maid. This is not the time for you to mess up. Do not drop a glass or spill anything on these men. They normally have a sour temper you should avoid seeing today. You have been doing good so do not disappoint me now."
Annalise pinched her hand behind her back to make sure she was awake and she had not been knocked out in the middle of her fight with Rafael to be dreaming that Mavis was complimenting her. There was a cold feeling that overcame her body upon Mavis saying that she was doing good.
’She’s possessed,’ Annalise concluded. It was the only answer to how nice Mavis was to her these days. She knew Rafael had a talk with Mavis, but still, the change was too much for her to believe this was still Mavis.
"Why are you still standing before me, Annalise? Get a move on it to get the drinks before his guests are seated. Just when I think you have been doing good, you return to your ways of not moving fast enough," Mavis said as she walked away to find another maid to join Annalise.
"I was wrong. This is Mavis," Annalise muttered.
The good start to her day with her enjoying Rafael’s breakfast and then having a sword fight against him was now over.
"Border guards," Annalise spoke softly as she walked inside the manor. She had been waiting for a moment like this to hear about the border and now she was going to be in the same room as the border guards.
She hoped they were here to deliver bad news to Rafael that this kingdom was losing the fight. She did not want to hear that her side was the one losing after she left them holding off the guards from stepping foot on their land.
