The Knight's Mysterious Maid -
Chapter 148: Doubt (1)
Chapter 148: Doubt (1)
"Why did I turn down the offer to fight him?" Annalise muttered, regretting her decision now that she was watching Rafael train against the knights once more. She wanted to test what it would be like to fight against him.
"Can you please leave?"
Annalise refused to look at her side at the two knights approaching her. "I am his maid. I am supposed to be by his side," she answered.
Michael tossed an apple in the air as he walked toward her. "Christian says that Rafael is only going so hard against us to-"
Christian smacked the back of Michael’s head to get him to shut up. Rafael was obviously still in denial about this woman and he always spoke of not having a relationship with his maids. Why would Michael be so foolish to tell Annalise what he said?
Michael grabbed the back of his head where there was pain. "You bastard! Where did my apple go?"
Annalise tried her best to control her anger after being struck in the head by an apple. What would it take for these knights to see her and leave her alone? She just wanted to watch Rafael. The man was a pain in the ass, but he was good to look at.
"Can you stop staring at our commander like you want to bed him?" Christian asked.
Annalise ignored the tall annoying fly beside her. He wasn’t much different from Logan aside from the fact there were no feelings for her.
"Why are all of you crowding around my woman?" Logan asked, glaring at the two men who should know to keep their distance from her.
Annalise sighed, feeling as though her grandmother had heard her speak poorly of returning favours and now she was being punished with bad luck. "Rafael!" Annalise called out to the distracted man as she stood up. She would rather get in trouble with Mavis than have to deal with the men around her. "I want to take up your offer."
Rafael was puzzled by what she meant until it came back to him that he had proposed a deal to get her to not go down to the river by herself. He looked at the three men standing behind her and wondered what caused her to change her mind.
When he planned to fight against her, he didn’t mean for it to be in front of his knights. He would have done it somewhere secluded so she would not be judged or embarrassed by losing to him.
Annalise walked out to where Rafael stood to get away from the three idiots behind her. "Is the offer still available?"
"It is," Rafael answered, handing his sword to a knight. "I am curious what has made you change your mind."
"I was surrounded by bugs where I sat and thought I would entertain myself. I think that your offer only benefits you, Sir Rafael. If I win, I also want a favour owed to me. It is only fair," Annalise said.
"It is, but why does it seem like you intend to fight me here? I will not fight my maid in front of my men-"
"Will it wound your confidence if you were to lose to me in front of them? That is the only reason I can think of now that you might not want to fight me here. That and Mavis passing out. I will not be embarrassed after a fight against you," Annalise promised.
She placed her hands behind her back to hide her excitement. She wished to show her full potential, but unfortunately, she would have to force herself to lose. It wouldn’t make sense for a maid to be able to keep up with the commander of knights for a long time and then win against him. There would be many questions asked that she did not want to answer. This was merely a test to see how strong he was.
"I am trying not to place you as the maid who doesn’t act like one around her employer. I will stick to my original plan of fighting with you in private. We will go down to the river and use wooden swords. Christian!" Rafael called, ignoring Christian sighing for now. He will deal with Christian’s laziness later. "You will take over here."
"Wait a minute," Logan said, moving to stand in between Annalise and Rafael. Why was he the only one here who was against the two of them fighting? "You cannot fight him."
"You are not my father or brother to have a say in what I can and cannot do. Stay out of this," Annalise advised Logan. He had no place to speak for her because of his feelings. She wished they would soon go away so he would stop acting like he should have a say in her life.
Annalise would soon show him how much having a crush or whatever the young women called it, could hurt. Even if she wasn’t who she was and she could have a relationship with one of the men here, it would never be Logan. She could write it out on a piece of paper so he could hang it somewhere in his bedroom to be reminded right as soon as he woke up or went to bed.
"Still," Logan replied, wanting to change her mind. He did not understand why she was making deals with Rafael and asking for favours. He knew that she was Rafael’s maid, but wasn’t this too much?
Logan had heard what Christian said from Michael who could never keep his mouth shut and laughed at the idea of Rafael liking Annalise. They were talking about the same man who gathered his maids just to tell them that nothing would ever happen between them and him. The man who had not shown any interest in women for a year now.
Logan knew that it was a foolish assumption and Christian was just messing with him, but he had some doubts about it. He looked at Rafael who was speaking with another knight about getting wooden swords.
Just as he had quickly taken a liking to Annalise, he knew it was possible for the other knights to do the same which was why he made a claim that he was trying to court her to keep the others away.
Logan started to have his doubts, but the mere fact he told Rafael about his feelings for Annalise was enough to make him get rid of those doubts for now. Rafael would never betray him and go after the woman Logan said he wanted to court. Rafael also had to be a man of his word and do nothing with one of his maids.
This didn’t help much with what he felt about Annalise and Rafael going down to the river alone.
"I will join the two of you. I will declare who wins," Logan said.
"There is no need. Stay here and help Christian. She will not come back missing an arm. It is just a wooden sword and a playful fight. Do not follow us," Rafael said as he was handed the wooden swords. "Follow me, Annalise."
"Rafael," Logan said, grabbing Rafael’s hand before he left with Annalise. "There is still trust, right?"
Unlike the others around them, Rafael knew what Logan meant. Logan might not know what Rafael was feeling and it might be jealousy speaking.
Rafael was trying to get rid of what he felt for Annalise right now, but he didn’t know what might happen in the future. "Right now, there is trust," Rafael honestly answered.
