The Knight's Mysterious Maid -
Chapter 121: A game (2)
Chapter 121: A game (2)
There was no response from the carriage other than one of the men surrounding it coming closer to the gate to speak with River.
River wasn’t interested in this person he did not know. Who he wanted to see was Travis. How could Travis come to their home, create all this noise, and not get out when he was outside? This was the same man who liked to speak about etiquette.
"If he thinks I will open my gates for him to finally step out and speak to me, he has another thing coming," said River.
Regardless of Beatrice fearing Travis would go to Rafael next, River was not going to open their gates and allow Travis to come inside and rile her up. They did not need to worry about Travis and Rafael meeting. Rafael was far from being a little boy who could not handle his uncle and once Beatrice was somewhere safe, River would join Rafael.
"The young lord wishes to meet his little sister. It has been so long since they have seen each other and it is due time that they have a reunion. You should not stand in the way of your wife seeing her brother, orphan."
The other men around the carriage started to laugh while River remained unaffected by the title he had heard many times. If they had come in his youth when having no parents bothered him, they might have gotten a reaction, but he was long past that. It was time they called him something else to try hurting his feelings.
After he killed Travis, he knew the second person he was going to kill. The idiot who thought the gate between them and his friends would be enough to stop him from being killed.
River had nothing more to say until Travis would show his face. He was starting to find it strange that Travis had not yet at least opened the door to speak. Travis was not the type to hide. He was hardly a coward even though he showed up with so many men around his carriage.
Travis would have gotten out of the carriage and taunted him about bringing a sword. Travis might have been a spoiled brat, but he received training to defend himself in any battle.
"He’s not here," River said out loud.
The surprised expression from the man closest to him at the gates confirmed it. Knowing that Travis was not here yet did not calm River’s anger. Travis had sent an empty carriage because he knew it would cause his sister to panic. This was all a game to mess with Beatrice. Travis had not yet gotten over her ruining her engagement to a man who would have brought more wealth to their family.
River turned around to head back inside. He would not waste his energy with these men when the person he wanted to kill was not here.
"The young lord will be coming soon to see you and your wife. You only have yourself to blame for spoiling the young lady. Getting her pregnant with a bastard!"
River slowed down and eventually stopped as the word bastard started to bother him. Rafael was far from being a bastard. Beatrice’s family never acknowledged the wedding they had late in the night at a church, but they were officially married.
"Open the gates," River ordered the two guards he had at his gates. "Let them inside."
The guards opened the gates as River instructed them to. There were five men on the outside, but there were two guards to help River with the fight.
"That is more like it," said Hans, the man Travis hired for the day to speak on his behalf. "You should have just let us in earlier. The young lord sent us with a message we must deliver to his sister face to face," he said as he walked through the gates. "I hope his little game to upset your wife did not bother you. I see it as a simple game between siblings."
River unsheathed his sword, admiring the blade Charles would have sharpened from time to time. He missed the beauty of a sword since he did not like to pick up one to worry Beatrice that he was going back out to fight again.
It had been so long since he indulged himself in a good fight.
River’s guards kept their hands on the hilt of their swords as they quietly approached the men who were focused on River from behind. They knew what River’s invitation inside meant and only needed to wait for River to give the order for them to carry it out.
"Come now. There is no need for you to get violent, old man. Why finally invite us inside just to pick a fight with us?" Hans asked. He needed to confirm for Travis that sending his carriage had caused his sister to panic and start to break down. It was the start of many games he planned to play to send his sister mad.
River chuckled at the comment about him being an old man. He knew he might not have been young like the men standing behind him, but was it really necessary to call him an old man? "Let this old man show you a few tricks," River said, turning back around to deal with the man who called his son a bastard.
He could take being called an orphan and all the other names they came up with, but what he would not ignore were insults to his wife and son.
"Under the king’s law, I could not kill you if you stand outside my gates, but when you stand on my estate, I am free to do as I please. Answer my question before I take your life. Where is Travis?" River asked.
Travis was not here right now, but he was somewhere else in town. Perhaps he was at Rafael’s manor now.
"I cannot answer that. I can offer you a bit of advice to save yourself and your wife. There is a young woman the lord wants your son to marry. She will soon arrive for the two to meet. That is all he wants and why he has been bothering you. Have your son marry her and you can go back to your little peaceful life. You do not want to pick a fight with me," Hans said as River drew dangerously close to him.
He knew the old knight was underestimating him since he was a bit smaller in size, but there was a reason why he was paid so much by the young lord. He provided a good service to get rid of anyone’s enemies.
"Ugh."
Hans made the mistake of turning his back to River as groans escaped the mouths of the men standing behind him. He saw that the same guards who opened the gates had begun to attack his men. "You fucking bastards-"
River swung his sword, aiming for Hans’s head to give it a clean cut. Since Travis was into playing games, he would join in and send him back the heads of the men Travis sent to bother him. River did not need to concern himself about the four men Travis brought in with him as his two guards did the job for him.
River peered down at Hans’s lips still moving and his eyes blinking before it stopped. "Never turn your back on your enemy."
They underestimated the man who had trained Rafael to become commander and forgot that he was the same man who helped train many young nobles for a good price. He might be getting old in their eyes, but he was still a threat.
"Cut off the other heads and place them in the carriage for the coachman to take back to wherever they came from. Tell the others to return to my home. My home will need more protection," River said as this was the continuation of a fight which started long before Rafael was born. This time he did not plan on letting Travis live.
