Chapter 120: A game (1)
"It is a beautiful day, River. We should leave the carriage and go for a nice walk. When was the last time we walked around and enjoyed the weather?" Beatrice asked. The sun was out and it just seemed like a good day for the two of them to spend time outside.
"It has been a while. If that is what you want, I will get your umbrella," River replied.
"Oh River," Beatrice sighed, feeling like her heart was going to burst because of her emotions. "If it is not something you want to do right now, we can stay inside. I’m sure you have work to do so do not mind me. We can walk tomorrow."
"What are you talking about? I have nothing to do today and I do not mind walking with you. It is better than just walking around our home. As long as you don’t plan to walk straight to Rafael’s home and ask to spend the night there," River said, seeing right through her plan.
"I wouldn’t do that again. We got to spend some time with him yesterday so I will give him some space. I cannot believe he came to visit us and he brought Annalise with him. I know that I shouldn’t meddle with his love life, but something’s telling me that I should now because there was something I noticed with his visit yesterday. Time will tell," Beatrice said, wanting to see a bit more before she would make a move.
River remained silent since he had no plans to get involved with Rafael getting married and who the young lady would be. The Delilah issue was enough to show that they should sit back and let Rafael deal with his life. They had raised a smart young man who would make the right decision and if he did not, it was his mistake to fix.
He rather not share his opinion with his wife for her to glare at him and lecture him about not having grandchildren if she did not give Rafael a little push.
"Charles! You look as if you have seen a ghost," Beatrice commented on the butler’s face as he returned to the dining room. He looked reluctant to tell them about something.
River also found Charles’ behaviour to be strange since the butler was smiling about something before he went to the door. "What is it?"
"There is a visitor here to see the lady and he is causing a bit of trouble at the gates. He has brought a few men with him and says that if we turn him away, he will be going to his nephew. He claims to be your brother, Lady Beatrice," said Charles. He hoped that it was not.
River instructed him to burn every letter that came from her family and he was prepared to do so, but now instead of letters, someone had shown up.
Beatrice placed her hand on her chest where there was a tight pain which affected her breathing. It had been years since she last saw her brother, but already hearing that he was near affected her.
"Beatrice!" River called to her, getting up from his seat to help her. "You need to breathe. Try to relax and control your breathing."
Beatrice spoke but nothing was heard by River or Charles. While River rubbed her back, Charles started to pour her water in case it would help.
"Beatrice," River said, holding her hand to calm her. He circled the back of her hand with his thumb to help.
Travis Norman, her brother, had some nerve to show up at their gates, demanding to be let in. River did not want him in the same space as Beatrice who was always afraid of her brother. Travis was the one to hate Beatrice the most after she expressed her love for River and there was a conversation she had alone with her brother that led her to be worked up like this when he came around.
River did not know the full story of Beatrice’s relationship with her brother or what was said when she told him that she was not going to marry the man her family picked out, but he knew how much Travis had come to hate his sister since he led the town in shaming her for getting married to a man beneath her.
"I-I am sorry," Beatrice apologised. Her brother was not even standing before her and she was already a mess. Long ago, she didn’t think there could be anyone scarier than her father, but her brother had proved her thoughts wrong. "We must invite him-"
"Like hell I would let him into our home when you reacted like this just from hearing he is outside. If I let him in it will be to kill the bastard," River said, trying his hardest not to leave and do it now since he needed to keep Beatrice calm.
He had seen her panic like this before and it had gotten so bad before that she was unable to respond to him and passed out. Aside from the day she brought Rafael into this world, it was one of the scariest things he had ever witnessed and he was a man who went to war.
"If we turn him away, he will go to Rafael. I believe him when he says he will. We will not be able to send a message to Rafael before my brother gets there and who knows what will happen if the two of them meet. Rafael must not meet him. Please," Beatrice pleaded. She did not want her monster of a brother anywhere near her son.
"Charles," River said, letting go of Beatrice. "Stay here with her and make sure she does not come outside. Pick her up and take her to our bedroom if she tries to get past you. I will speak to your brother alone," he said.
He had been waiting to see Travis after all these years to get back at him for the trouble he caused Beatrice. His own sister. It was about time her family got used to the fact she had married him and apologise for the way they treated her. If they weren’t here to give her the apology she deserved, they shouldn’t show up at all.
Even after an apology, River would still look to keep Beatrice away from her family. The ones who were looking to use Rafael’s friendship with the king and other nobles to benefit themselves.
River left Beatrice and Charles alone to deal with her brother. Before going outside, he stopped to pick up a sword he kept by the front door. In a pot next to where the sword was kept, there was a gun given to him by someone long ago. He had no use for it in the past and he has no use for it now since the sword would be more than enough to deal with Travis.
It had been five years since he picked up his sword with the intention of killing someone, but this was a good day to start again.
Just as Charles said, there was a carriage parked outside the gates with men surrounding it.
"Travis!" River yelled, wanting him to come out of his hiding hole.
