Chapter 117: Gentle touch (3)

"I do not have any animals in my room. It is not allowed for us to have pets and any insects that are in there were probably there before me so who am I to chase them away from their home? As long as we do not bother each other, we can share the space. They know to keep off the bed," Annalise said.

"You are peculiar," Rafael said as he wrapped cloth around her hand. "I don’t know any woman who would enjoy having insects in her room and not want to remove them. I am still puzzled by the fact you like snakes."

"Then maybe you have been around boring women," Annalise answered. She could give a few examples of who they were.

"Perhaps," Rafael replied. "Women like you are rare in this town. If there were more, there would be fathers and brothers losing their minds."

Annalise leaned forward and asked, "Is that something bad? Am I seen as terrible in this town?"

Rafael looked up from her hand to her. Her brows were knitted as she worried about it. "To those who like to look and act a certain way, they would think poorly of your actions. Speak down on you even more since you are a maid. To others who enjoy a more carefree life, you would be a breath of fresh air. Bringing something new to their lives."

"I see. Mavis has told me how to be your maid, but for you, which person are you?" Annalise asked.

"Isn’t it obvious?" Rafael replied, feeling that she should already know which side he was on.

"No," Annalise said, shaking her head. "There are times when you don’t mind my actions, but then you have rules for how the knights should act-"

"You are not a knight," Rafael corrected her. "I let the knights do as they please most of the time. It is only when they start acting like children and being annoying that I make them stop playing around. It is underestimated how childish many of them can be when they are home."

"I have seen it. They are interesting," Annalise awkwardly smiled as many of the things she saw the knights doing when she walked around the manor puzzled her. They messed around with each like brothers toying with each other, but when it was time to train, their personalities switched.

Now that she thought of training, Annalise remembered that she needed to do her own training. She had to put time into it when she was not working.

"On these days when you won’t need me much, would I be able to leave the manor? Perhaps at night when you will be resting?" Annalise asked.

"You are aware that you are not a captive right? Maids come and go out of the gates when they are finished working. You are free to do as you want. I am done," Rafael said, letting go of her hand.

"It does not work that way for the maids who live here. We are not to leave the manor after a certain time or we might lose the rooms offered to us. I would have no other place to stay on such short notice so I have never left because I do not know if I would be back in time," Annalise explained. She would have been seeing Thomas more often if not for this rule.

Rafael was confused by this rule since he had never ordered it. He didn’t mind that at the end of the day, the servants would go wherever they wanted. To forbid them from leaving at night meant they had to wait for the day they did not have to work to do everything and not get much rest. He was not even that strict with the knights when he should be so a handful of them would stop returning to the manor drunk in the morning.

"Who has told you this rule?" Rafael asked as it seemed a lot of changes were made in his absence.

"Well, as a maid I listen to the head maid. I was told all the rules when I first arrived," Annalise answered.

"That was never a rule. It is only when you leave and do not come back when you are supposed to work that your room will be given away to someone else who needs it. I will let Mavis know when I speak to her about what you need to address me as-"

"Please do not tell her that it was me who told you this!" Annalise exclaimed, pleading with him since she did not need Mavis to be angry with her again. They were finally starting to get along and dare she say it, she was somewhat liking Mavis.

"And what do I get in return for leaving your name out of it?" Rafael asked, not missing the opportunity to have her owe him again.

Annalise frowned. "For a man with so much wealth, you are always asking for something from your maid. Please keep in mind that I am not paid enough to buy you something that you might enjoy. I cannot afford fancy swords or whatever it is you have in mind."

"I am not looking to have you buy anything for me. If in the future I ask you to do something for me, you must remember that you owe me and do it," Rafael said.

"I am your maid. I already do whatever you ask of me," Annalise replied. There was nothing she could refuse him.

"There are things I may need you to do that are not part of your normal duties as my maid. What if I were to ask you to unleash a lot of snakes on one of my enemies? I cannot ask you to do that as my maid, but as Annalise, when you are not working, I can. It is time I head down for breakfast. Is it tight?" He asked, looking at how he tied it up.

"You were a bit dramatic with how you tied up such a small wound, but it is not tight. What?" Annalise questioned because of his gaze. "Thank you for helping me, young- Sir Rafael," she quickly corrected herself.

"We shall see about those punishments," Rafael smiled, walking around her so they could start going down to the dining room before his food would be cold.

"We shall not," Annalise muttered.

"Have you eaten already?" Rafael asked.

"Yes. I have eaten bread-"

Rafael stopped just as he was about to open the door for them to leave. "Why is it always bread?" He asked.

"I was going to say bread and a few of the fruits your mother gave to me. I was not in the mood for the eggs that were served to us this morning. I did enjoy the juice that was made for us. It was a nice treat and a good start to the morning. I will see if there is more and bring it to you a little after breakfast since you might be full," Annalise said since the owner should also get to taste it.

"You need to eat more than bread. You will faint one of these days and people will think that I have overworked you," Rafael replied.

Annalise quietly followed Rafael out of his room and down to the first floor to the dining room. When they entered the dining room, Mavis gave her a look like she wanted to know why Rafael had been so late. She must not have known that Henry was here.
