Chapter 116: Gentle touch (2)

"Can I touch you?" Rafael asked before he did so. He was still aware of how she did not like to be touched and though he wanted to deal with her hand quickly, he wanted to get her permission first. He wanted to respect her space and not push on her that he was going to take her hand to deal with her wound.

"You can," Annalise replied.

It needed to be dealt with now before the blood could drop down onto the floor. She opened her right hand all the way so he could see the long slash she gave herself.

Annalise had actually picked up the sword to feel how heavy it was and when the door started to open, she panicked when putting it back and accidentally grabbed the blade.

"You are lucky that it is not deep," Rafael said as he inspected the long mark. It could be taken care of easily but she might be left with the scar from it. "How did you even cut the palm of your hand? Did you pick up the sword?"

"Would I be in trouble if I did?" Annalise asked.

"You would be in trouble if I find you lied to me about trying to pick up one of my swords. Keep in mind that I have the evidence right here," he said, squeezing her hand to remind her.

Annalise winced at the stinging pain that followed. Wasn’t he supposed to be helping her? "I picked it up to see what it would feel like," she admitted.

"I hope next time you’ll be smart to not take something that does not belong to you and it is sharp. Sit down on the bed. I will wrap it for you," Rafael said.

"You don’t have to- Thank you," Annalise changed her mind after he gave her a look. She sat down on the bed to avoid being scolded by him. "Was meeting with her father that bad? I thought it would have gone well and ended all of this. Your families seemed to be close before all of this."

"Follow me."

"But you just told me to sit down," Annalise muttered, following his order again as she stood up.

"I should have stuck to my judgment not to entertain a conversation with Henry, but I chose to listen to you and almost," Rafael stopped himself before he could reveal what he had almost done to Henry.

There was anger behind his actions that he had not released even when he was training with his knights.

"Almost what? Did you almost kill him?" Annalise asked, thrilled by the idea that Rafael might have nearly killed the man. It would be the most entertainment she had from someone else in a while. It was always her caught up in the trouble that happened in this manor.

Annalise cleared her throat as she realised how casually she had been speaking to Rafael. It had become so natural that she did not know when she started doing it.

"Young master-"

"I told you not to call me that," Rafael said.

"Sir Rafael," Annalise corrected herself. He had to be the only person she came across with status in this town who did not want to be called young master or lady to be reminded of where he stood amongst everyone else.

Calling him Rafael to his face did not feel right after she had forced herself to learn how to address someone with his status and Mavis had practically cemented it in her head to call him young master. She disliked how she had taken so much time to learn the social rules here and that someone kept breaking them every day. Twisting them to their liking.

"I am sorry. It will take a moment for me to get used to not calling you young master," Annalise admitted. She could talk about him when he was not around and use his name, but there was something about being aware that she was casually using his name and looking at him that she did not like.

"A nice punishment each time you fail to get it right would help you to learn faster," Rafael said, leading her into the bathroom so he could wash the blood from her hand and wrap it up. They had wasted too much time standing around talking.

Annalise followed Rafael to the bathroom. "And by punishment you mean?"

"Whatever comes to mind," Rafael replied, holding the bathroom door for her to enter before him.

Annalise frowned. She already owed him something for asking him to speak with Deliah’s father now she might receive a punishment for not calling him Sir Rafael or just Rafael. Being his maid was starting to not seem like a good position.

Rafael was nice with how he cared for his servants, but she had the feeling he would thoroughly enjoy toying with her. There were a few moments when he liked to tease her. It was then she felt like she had seen the real Rafael. Other times he was silent or gave a short response.

"I will make sure to refer to you as Sir Rafael from this moment on. You do not need to think of any punishments," Annalise said as she walked by Rafael.

Mavis made her have to chase after chickens. Annalise did not want to experience what the commander of knights would make her do.

Annalise entered the bathroom and awaited what Rafael intended to do. She could take care of the wound herself. It would not be the first time she needed to patch up herself. They had talked so much that she had forgotten she had cut herself. A little bit of pain like this did not worry her.

"Hold your hand over here. We need to wash away the blood first. Do not tell me that you can do it on your own," Rafael said, holding her left hand which was not wounded and pulled her toward him so he could take care of her.

"I told you if you are too nice to me people will talk. Look what it has done with you and Lady Delilah," Annalise said, watching him pour water over her hand and then he gently rubbed away the blood that had started to dry with his thumb.

"It is ridiculous that I am not allowed to treat a maid well because of what others might think. Get used to the fact that I do not care about what the town thinks. Soon you will hear what many truly think of my family. When we are alone like this I should be able to help you if you are cut. Even if it was from you snooping around my room," Rafael said.

He was careful not to be rough as he washed and used his thumb to clean off the blood. He poured more water on her hands when he was finished.

"I wasn’t snooping around your room, but if it would make you feel better, you can snoop around your mind," Annalise offered. There weren’t any fancy weapons like his, but she felt like there were still some interesting things in her room. Like the spider which would trap any flying insects that dared come in the window.

"It is a good offer, but no thank you. I do not want to see what animals you have living in there," Rafael replied.
