THE Knight's Hidden Princess
Chapter 89: The Double crossing

Chapter 89: The Double crossing

After three weeks with the refugees, they were starting to slowly warm up to me. It wasn’t much—just small things. When I walked by them they gave brief greetings while they saved me a portion of their food and their angry looks diminished while I struggled with my work. Their skepticism toward me persisted although I had no expectation for full trust at that time. The cold resentment which initially dominated their attitude began to soften after a period of three weeks.

Martha stopped looming over me, trusting me to able to handle cooking duty on my own without messing them up. Lars had also stopped with the snarky remarks, although I suppose it was more of exhaustion than any real softening of attitude and the children also began to warm up to me.

I was starting to feel more at home than I ever did and even most days I looked forward to heading to the camp. Marina seemed to notice that I went out frequently more but she didn’t stop me. I suppose she hope I would be getting into trouble more than ever so Reagan could find something else to be mad about. It would work well in hers and Celeste’s favor.

Deep down, I knew if Reagan found out about this he was going to be pissed, which was even an understatement since I defied his order but as of right now I just couldn’t find it in me to care.

For the first time in a very long time, I felt really comfortable. Like I had found my place and acceptance in the world and the best part, I didn’t even need to hide behind a mask just to do it.

I was busy playing with the kids after a long day of working. We decided to play a catch of game of tag and I was ’It.’ The children laughed as they ran looking for the best spot to hide while I turned my back and counted backwards from ten so afterwards I get to search for them.

"Eight..." I yelled just as a bunch of scattered giggles sounded in the forest where they stayed.

"You know these kids don’t get tired right?"

I turned to look at Heather who was busy carrying a basket filled with fruits which she balanced on her hip. "I know they don’t but if I stop now they will only pester me till I eventually say yes, so it was better to give in to their demands now!"

Heather nodded her head at me in response, "Yes that may be true but you don’t have to give in all the time. They will just end up tiring you out."

"Oh well, I like playing with them." I responded with a glint in my eyes, "Now where was I? Oh right, three, two, one, ready or not here I come!" I warned before I dashed into the woods where I knew the children were hiding.

Their giggles betrayed their hiding space and I knew immediately where they were but I decided to drag it as long as I could. I pretended I couldn’t hear them or see the feet sticking out from the trees and instead chose to walk in the opposite direction.

Shaking my head I ventured deeper into the woods and then I heard male voices. Curious, I approached stealthily and I came across a group of men who were busy polishing their weapons, among them I could recognize Hansel and Lars, each of them wore smiles on their faces as if they had just gotten the best news and I leaned in close just so I could listen.

"Are you sure Nick?"

Nick nodded his head, his bald head shining in the sun as he did so. "Affirmative, you all know my cousin Ophelia, works there and she has confirmed this information!"

What information? I thought to myself as I shuffled closer to hear the rest without trying to make myself get known.

Another round of laughter sounded from the guys and it was if they found something amusing which made me want to hear more since it was from the palace.

"Can’t believe the king is really going to go through with this."

Lars snorted, "Well he is fucking ruthless, I tell you that man was born without a heart and even if that wasn’t possible, he must have sold it a long time ago to the god of darkness!"

"But screwing his favorite over?" Hansel asked with disbelief, "Not to mention it his son in law."

Son in law? Reagan? My eyes widened in realization as I stared up at the men who still weren’t aware about my presence.

"So you all are saying, the king sent his favorite to a campaign but he doesn’t know it is actually a death sentence? The Kashkil warriors and the Iravia have been at war for decades and neither one of them wants to settle, everyone knows that."

The Kahkil warriors? My heart thudded in my chest as I remembered I read something about them in the archives in the library one time. The Kashkil warriors were one of those my father had not been able to control. There were many others but none like the Kashkil warriors who were known for their ruthlessness and unwavering loyalty to their own. They were also known for their brutal combat skills on the battlefield and their love for bloodshed.

It is said that their leader always dipped his blood into blood of his enemies after each battle and it has never been washed because he wants the stench of death to follow him wherever he goes. The Kashkil are people who thrived in war, their entire life was built on strength and conquest. If Reagan had truly been sent there, it wasn’t just a campaign, it was death sentence.

"Wanna know the funniest thing about all of this?" I heard a man say again.

"What is that?"

"The princess doesn’t know her husband will be dying soon."

A round of laughter went around the guys, laughing heartily as if they had just shared a great joke! My stomach twisted, nausea creeping up as their words echoed in my mind. No, this had to be some kind of joke, it couldn’t be real!

My father would never do that, but even as I stood there, I knew without a doubt that my father is someone was pretty much capable of anything at this point. So without any questions asked, I turned and ran but not before hearing the next words that chilled me to the bone.

"So who is going to tell the princess to bring back her funeral clothing?"
