Chapter 67: Make Them See You
Chapter 67: Make Them See You
"Oh my gods, did you see her face?" Heather bust out laughing the moment we entered the house we were going to be staying in.
I hummed in response while twirling around to inspect the house. It was big and spacious with high ceilings and polished wooden floors that gleamed under the gentle candlelight. The central area of the main hall showcased an inviting fireplace made from stone while it held an empty hearth. Dark oak bookshelves that were waiting to be filled with books ran along the hall of the space which add to the powerful story of that house.
Though dust covered everywhere but it was about to be home to me, it belonged to me! Finally, a place where I can finally get comfortable in! I thought to myself as I lowered myself into one of the dusty covered seats.
"Oh, Lady Marina looked so vexed, had never seen her like that before for a minute I feared she was going to turn purple in the face." Heather continued laughing as she did so, clearly still excited.
I smiled wryly at her, "Yeah. I still can’t believe I spoke to her like that." I said with a sigh.
Heather stopped laughing and turned to look at me, "Are you okay?"
"Of course, I am." I answered her with a nod.
Heaving out a sigh, Heather grabbed a stool and brought it closer towards me as she took a seat. "Alright, let me rephrase." She said, "Do you regret it?"
"Absolutely not." I replied her with a scoff, "But I won’t admit things are going to be different now."
"Oh it sure is." Heather replied, "Now they will think twice before they talk to you now instead of spewing their usual nonsense. Gods, just thinking about the stuff they said in you absence makes me even more angry!" Heather huffed out, a deep frown settling on her face.
That was not even the least surprising to me. "Let them talk, it’s not anything new and I’m sure it’s nothing I haven’t heard before."
"That’s the whole point, you shouldn’t have to hear such words." Heather informed me, "You are really good person who doesn’t deserve any of this. Everyone just misunderstand you without knowing your heart is in the right place."
I smiled at Heather knowing she meant well with her words, but it just doesn’t seem to comfort me like she hoped it would.
"Maybe that’s the problem then." I said with a frown while she frowned at me in confusion, "Maybe it doesn’t matter where my heart is if no one cares to see it." I said my eyes misty with tears as I thought back to everything that had happened.
Heather stared at me before realization suddenly dawned on her. "So I’ll take it you and sire haven’t spoken?"
"No." I admitted, "He doesn’t want to hear what I have to say."
"Perhaps, he just needs a little bit more time."
"No, no, no," I shook my head at Heather, "We had a conversation and he is done Heather, you didn’t see the look in his eyes and I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I’d rather he looked at me like he used to. Back when he couldn’t stand my presence, I think I would prefer it to the hate in his eyes now."
Heather stared at me for a while not saying anything but she later reached out to hold my hand. "He will come around." Heather informed me, "He will, eventually."
"Even though he already made Celeste his official concubine?"
"He was hurt and acted on it." Heather said, "You of all people know that he doesn’t feel anything for Celeste, everyone knows that."
Yeah, I doubt that! I thought wryly to myself but I didn’t say anything, just simply nodded my head in order to move on from the depressing conversation and focus on more pressing matters at hand. "So, how is it going?"
Heather immediately brightened up at that, adjusting herself on her seat as she responded. "Everyone is okay, they all found their way to their families okay and they’ve been moved to the hideout as instructed.
"And they are all okay? The ones who are sick have been healed?" I asked and Heather nodded her head at me in response, but there was something else in her gaze, something guarded and that made me pause. "What is it, Heather?" I demanded.
Heather offered me a small smile, "Well everyone is okay like I said but we are starting to run low on feeding and well the people are starting to get worried."
I exhaled slowly not in the least surprised. Of course I knew food would be the first to go but I just didn’t think it would be this soon. "How bad is it?" I asked her already dreading the answer.
Heather stared at me looking for a way to make this easy for me probably not to worry me but something in my look must have told her to just lay it out on me. "Bad." She finally replied, "We have supplies that can last us about some days, maybe, and that’s if we ration it carefully. The adults can still survive but the children is what I’m worried about. They need more than just scraps to be able to grow well."
Heaving out a sigh, I raked a hand through my hair as I felt guilt churn in my stomach. I had promised to protect them and I had thought I was doing a great job of it but turns out I now have bunch of starving people in my hand.
"I’ve been doing all I can to try and sneak some food out but it’s not that easy." Heather informed me, "They are too much my lady and I hate to admit but we need help."
"Oh yeah, and where do you suggest we get that from?" I asked her, hoping she had any idea.
Heather looked at me for a while with a small smile on her face and I already knew who she was going to say but I wasn’t having it.
"No, no, no way." I told Heather firmly, "There is just no way I am dragging him into this."
"Heaving out a sigh, Heather stood up from the chair frustration heavy in her tone as she stared at me. "Well I’m afraid this time around, you don’t have a choice. You need to ask for Sir Reagan’s help."
"And tell me Heather, how do you propose I do that?" I asked dryly.
Heather stared at me almost as if she didn’t know how to answer it and I was just about to point it to her when suddenly she turned to look at me with a grim expression on her face.
"I guess both of you will just have to swallow your pride and make him see you." Heather responded and just like that we heard a knock on the door which suddenly opened and servants began to troop in carrying my trunk inside.
Heather stood up to go and help them leaving me alone to contemplate on what she just said which begs the question, how do I make Reagan see me?
