Chapter 196: If Only He Knew How Right He Was

DAHLIA POV

I was dying, this time around I was positive that I was dying!

My whole body hurts, it felt like I had been trampled upon like a thousand horses. There were moments were I can barely remember things or anything that had happened to me. Sometimes my whole body shut down and I retired to the place where I wasn’t aware of anything. I become numb to it all, sometimes it was good but other times I become aware of everything that happened to me.

Every cuts, every bruises, every groping and every whips that lash time at me. They also laugh while inflicting pain, their sounds mocking as they did so. They also cursed me out anytime they call my name. It was times like that that I wished that I hadn’t said what I said the last time. I wished to the gods that I had kept my mouth shut instead of signing my rights away to that sadistic soldier. I wished I had been more selfish with myself and run when I had the chance. I shouldn’t have turned back and tried to save anyone, I should have saved myself first.

Because now, who is going to save me?

No one, absolutely no one. I had long given up hope that anyone was going to come and save me. There was no one that was coming to save me. The soldier whose name I’ve come to learn was Callum had succeeded in doing what he had promised he was going to do, he finally broke me! Something I never thought would happen but it would appear that Callum finally succeeded in it.

I do not know how long I’ve been down here. The pit is where they call it, a place where time doesn’t exist. Nothing but only darkness. I can barely remember anything here. I do not know what days of the week it was and I do not think I care.

I stopped caring about things a long time ago!

The sound of keys jingling made me crack and eye open and I felt dread feel my body as I heard the door to the gates on my cell open. My body tensed on the ground as I squinted at who was coming. I noticed two figures make their way inside.

"You got five minutes!" A voice snarled and I released a whimper when I heard the voice of a soldier.

The door soon slammed after that, enveloping me in darkness but I could feel the presence of someone inside with me. I wasn’t alone. I sniffed as I sat up straight, the chains rattling as I did so. "Who...who’s there?" I breathed out starting to get terrified.

"My lady, it’s just me." The voice said and it was strangely familiar, "Loraine."

Loraine? The name sounded familiar but I still couldn’t a name to it. The sound of a match stick getting lit filled the darkness followed by a small light. Bright orange light suddenly filled the darkness and it was as a result of the lantern Loraine had lit.

A gasp escape her lips as she stared at me with a look of horror on her face. "Gods above what did they do to you?"

"Loraine." I called again as I scrambled from where I might have known her from in the mess inside my brain.

"Yes." Loraine said as she casually approached me, "Do you perhaps not remember?"

I stared up at the woman, my brain still trying to get where I might have known her from. Loraine, Ilyana’s mother! I remember her now and I also remember that she was the one who was responsible for putting me here, I remember everything clearly now. The betrayal! It was her, it was her fault!

"You!" I snarled at her.

Loraine’s bottom lips trembled as she stared at me with a resigned look on her face. "You do remember?"

Of course, how could I forget? I am being whipped fifty times a day to make sure that I remember, that I never forget the consequences of my action. Loraine lowered herself to the ground right in front of me. I eyed her warily not sure what she was doing. I didn’t ask her to seat and I do not want her to, not after what she did.

"Why are you here?"

Loraine reached inside the basket I had not noticed. She pulled out a warm loaf of bread that smelled sweet from where I was. "I brought you something."

I eyed the bread like it was a deadly poison. I didn’t collect it from her, instead, I shrank back further into the shoulders. "Why have you brought that? Have you come to poison me?"

"What no? My lady I would never do that." Loraine rushed out but there was nothing she could say that would make me believe her.

"But it’s because of you I am in here." I reminded her then cocked my head at her, "Have you perhaps come here to finish the job?"

Loraine sighed but there was a look of remorse on her face as she stared at me. "I am sorry."

I chuckled weakly as I leaned back against the moss covered wall. "It’s funny how you keep saying that like you automatically expect everything to be alright."

"I know....I know what I’ve done is unforgivable." Loraine said wrangling her hands nervously as she came up with a way to justify her acts, "I did what I did because I thought it was the right thing to do. They would have found us anyway. You do not understand how this people worked my lady. They are smart and ruthless. It would have been hell for us if they caught us so I made a deal."

"Yeah that only you and your daughter be spared while the rest of us suffers for it?"

"We are all doing fine. I made the good choice because they’ve treated us better than they did the last time." She said her voice taking a desperate edge to it as if she wanted me to believe her to accept her apology.

I stared down at the chains in my wrist and Loraine followed my sight. She swallowed before she looked away but I could see a tear slipping down her face.

"Everyone except you, I guess." She mumbled before she was quiet.

Humming softly, I closed my eyes as I relaxed back against the wall. I was tired and just needed to rest. I will need to gather my strength again before they returned to dole out my punishment for the day.

"I’m sorry."

I cracked an eye open only to see that Loraine was still there, still seating with tears streaming down her face. "My apologies Loraine, but I think you have to leave now." Because if I heard one more apology from her, I might just strangle.

Loraine was quiet again and just when I thought that I had my moment of silence, Loraine spoke again. "I am so sorry Dahlia. I did what I did as a mother who protects_"

The rest of the word sounded muffled in my ears. My eyes snapped open and in one swift movement, I leapt up and lunged myself at Loraine. My fingers wrapped around her throat tightly as I held her down on the ground.

I watched as her eyes widen as she clawed at my hands trying to get me to release her but I didn’t. I held on to her tightly not releasing her even as she struggled against me. Her face turned pink due to the lack of oxygen and her movements were weaker now.

"Please..." She wheezed out, "P...please..." She said but I just squeezed her neck tighter.

I do not want to hear her voice anymore. I do not want to hear any more of her lies. She did this to me, she was the one who attacked me, she did this to me! She did this, it was all her fault! She took away my one chance to get out of this hell. She took away the only lead I have to get back home. To get back to my family.

To Reagan, to Heather, Ivana, Nikolai, Ivar, my son who was going to grow up without a mother thanks ti her and now, now, she wants to tell me she did what she had to do as a mother to protect her daughter?

"WHAT ABOUT ME?" I roared at her, "I’M A MOTHER TOO! I’M A MOTHER TOO!" I roared as I continued to squeeze her face.

Loraine blinked slowly as her hands fell to the side and I knew I should stop. Something in me knows that I should stop except I do not want to.

The doors to my cell suddenly opened and I heard people rush in but I still didn’t let go. Not until I got yanked away by some guards but even until then I struggled against the. For the first time I fought back and didn’t stop. Not when they shoved me backwards or whipped me with a small whip, not when they laid me down and kicked me countlessly but is till fought back while screaming and I heard one of the guards say something like I might have finally lost my mind.

If only he knew how right he was!
