THE Knight's Hidden Princess -
Chapter 194: A Place Of Love
Chapter 194: A Place Of Love
REAGAN POV
I could feel a migraine starting to form in my head at the sound of the constant whining coming from my family members. If there was a way to avoid morning assembly, I would do it. There were lot of pressing matters that needed my attention, pressing matters like saving Dahlia and most times I always handed the reins over to my mother. She could handle what needed to be done in town but matters like this needed my attention.
They were talking about holding a proper naming ceremony for Ivar. Since he was born the day Dahlia was declared death, everyone was busy mourning her death. No one had time to think of the new born babe she had left behind. But now there were whispers among the street, people were starting to find it strange that the heir to house Hawthorne wasn’t granted any naming ceremony. His name wasn’t announced and they were starting to get restless, most especially my mother.
I glanced up at my mother who was busy pacing the hallway talking about history and how my father would be rolling in his grave at such atrocity.
"It’s simply hasn’t been done before!" She said, "The babe is almost a year and he is yet to have his naming ceremony."
Gently massaging my temples, I glanced up at my mother. "He already has a name and you know it."
My mother scoffed at me, as she stared at me with mock horror. "The gods forbid a woman tried to give her grandson born of a strong bloodline a grand ceremony that will introduce him to the world." She said and I arched a brow up at her but she wasn’t finished, "When you were born_"
"Here we fucking go." I muttered under my breath.
My mother narrowed her eyes at me but didn’t say anything, "When you were born, we had the grandest naming ceremony ever and that time your father was just a knight, not a lord like you are now." She said as she stared at me, "You’ve given me my first grandson and I intend to make him be the best Hawthorne. He may have come from those traitors bloodline but he is now a Hawthorne."
"Careful mother, reign in your anger." I chastised her, "Be calm."
I might as well have said the wrong thing because my mother whirled around to look at me, her fur cloak trailing after her as she stalked towards me with eyes flashing with anger. "Oh believe me I will be calm when my grandson has his ceremony!" She said before she huffed out a breath, "The people are starting to whisper Reagan. They think us poor, not rich to afford a naming ceremony of the heir of house Hawthorne! I mean can you imagine what would happen if word got to the king?"
I merely stared at my mother in response. I wasn’t worried but she was right, the people were starting to whisper. He was my son, the son of the fearsome knights in the kingdom and yet there was no grand ceremony for him. The people were also curious about him and I know he needs to be introduced as my heir but I wasn’t willing to do anything, not without her at least.
"I will do the ceremony." I said and I watched my mother’s face crumple with relief, "But not now, soon!"
"Why you...."
"My lord!" We suddenly got interrupted by one of my men who suddenly burst into the room with a look of worry on his face.
We immediately became alert while my mother on the other hand looked furious at the interruption. I turned towards my guard hoping whatever it is he has to say is worth it because if not, my mother might have his head for his insolence.
"What is Lowe?" I asked him,
Lowe bowed his head before he straightened back up to speak. "My deepest apology my lord, but his majesty the king has arrived."
That immediately wiped away the migraine that was forming earlier. No one knew about the King’s arrival which was why everyone was stunned in silence. But then I could feel rage coursing through my veins. He dared to show his face here? In my home?
There was a reason why I had been avoiding the king. I avoided anything that would make me see the king. I only accepted his orders through letters and there wasn’t much of it these days so I was able to avoid him because if I didn’t. What I was going to do to him wouldn’t be considered treason but something much worse!
My mother could see the rage on my face because she stepped closer towards me before she turned to look at Lowe who still had an uneasy look on his face. "And where is his majesty?"
"In the young master’s bedroom."
Immediately Lowe said that, I felt a surge of protectiveness overcome the rage I was feeling and before anyone could get any word out, I was already out of the room. My heart thudded in my chest as I raced up the stairs to Ivar’s room.
I knew I shouldn’t have left him alone, I knew I shouldn’t have left him alone and brought him to the damn meeting! I swear to God if Sigurd did anything to my son, I was going to throw him out the window and have the horses trample over his corpse! I thought to myself just as I neared Ivar’s room.
Without thinking too much about it, I pushed it open. I meant Sigurd sitting on a chair, holding Ivar in his arms. He wasn’t alone too. He had come to our manor with Bjorn and Evie who looked different and I was momentarily stunned at her appearance.
It was the first time that I would be seeing her in a dress and also her hair was done in an elegant updo. Seems they were trying too hard not to allow her secret to come out because I knew her hair was shaved low and all she was putting on was a wig. Heather stood in the corner of the room her head bowed but even I could see the tension in her shoulders.
Ivar cooed gently bring my attention back to where he laid in Sigurd’s arms who was now staring at me. I blinked slowly before I bowed in respect towards him.
"Your majesty!" I greeted him before I straightened.
Sigurd smirked at me, "I assume that you are quite surprised to see me."
Quite the opposite! I thought to myself but didn’t say anything instead my gaze just moved towards where Ivar was. I heard hurried footsteps coming towards us. Without turning, I already knew it was my family who was coming to pay respect to the king.
"Your majesties!" My mother bowed followed with my siblings and Nikolai.
"Ah Marina," Sigurd said and Ivar released something that look like a cry to which Sigurd began rocking him gently but Ivar still fussed a little bit.
My hands clenched at my side as I willed myself to stay still when what I wanted to do was yank Ivar away from his arms. As if sensing my presence, Ivar let out another cry and this time it was loud.
"Ohhh hush now little one." Sigurd cooed down at Ivar, stroking his cheeks, "I guess my daughter finally did one thing right. He’s beautiful."
"And hungry too, it would appear. Takes after his father with that one." Bjorn said chuckling nervously and there was no doubt that he could sense the tension in the room.
Ivar cried again and this time I stepped forward, "Perhaps I can relieve you just a bit while we go talk elsewhere?"
"Nonsense, I’d like to spend time with my grandson." Sigurd said looking down at Ivar who was still crying, "He reminds me so much of her and it just breaks my heart that he was the only thing she left behind."
"Give me my son!" I suddenly said, surprising everyone but I didn’t care.
All I could focus on were Ivar’s cries. He probably sensed the evil in the Sigurd and wanted no part to do with it. Dahlia also tasked me with one job which was protect Ivar and that meant from her father.
My mother glared at me before she laughed, a little too loud for my liking. She strolled forward before she bowed ahead. "Forgive me your majesty, my son is feeling a little bit too overprotective. I swear we practically have to beg him to attend the morning assembly with us because he likes the presence of his son more than maintain affairs of the state." My mother rushed out with a well-practiced smile.
Sigurd barely spared her any glance. Instead, his gaze was on mine. Silver eyes narrowed into slits, "Are you sure you are alright Reagan?"
There was a certain bite to his tone, one that suggested that I think carefully about how I answer. I straightened and walked towards him. I stared down at Ivar in his arms and without any other words, I carried my son away from him.
I bowed my head at him, "My apologies, but if he doesn’t eat right now, he is going to throw more fuss than this."
Sigurd stared at me before his gaze dropped on Ivar who was now quiet. "Alright then, I guess you are right." He said with a smile, "How about we go somewhere quiet to discuss important matters then?" He asked with a smile that I knew didn’t come from a place of love.
