Chapter 162: Temprorary Blackness
Fuck!
I cursed as I stared at the keeper who had a blank look on her face as if a sharp knife wasn’t pressed against her neck. She stood in front of the man in the midst of all the shattered relics and fallen bodies, a calm expression on her face. Her long white robes were stained with ash and it also had tiny specks of blood on it. The blade the man was holding pressed against her jawline and I clenched my fist tighter when I noticed a trickle of blood starting to roll down her pale skin and yet, she just stared ahead and I was starting to think perhaps it was mercy that she couldn’t see. The horrors in front of her wouldn’t have kept her upright.
"You take that like knife of that little girl!"
"Little?" The man asked his voice tinged with disbelief as he pressed the knife a little tighter, "There’s nothing about the little about her. She seems to know so much for just a little girl!"
"You are right, I am not little and I know so much just like I know that there’s no way that you will be making it out of here alive!" The keeper spoke in her calm tone but she winced a little when the man pressed the knife against her.
"Hey!" I yelled as I stared at him in anger, I needed to shut this down quickly, "Just stop alright, don’t hurt her!"
"Then do as I fucking say and drop your weapons!" He yelled and I could tell how angry he was with the veins forming lines across his forehead.
I turned to look at the women and together we got out of our hiding places but we still didn’t drop the weapons. We turned to stare at the man and my gaze moved towards the keeper who was staring directly at me as if she could sense just where I was.
"Are you all deaf? Drop the weapons or I’ll slice her tiny little neck and don’t think I won’t do it!" The man yelled as he glared at us.
"Okay..." I said raising a hand up as I tried to calm him down, "How about you just calm down and..."
"Do it!"
All at once my gaze moved towards the keeper who had spoken. We all stared at her and the look on her face wasn’t one of fear, not even concern but something more terrible.
Conviction.
Even the man seemed to be taken aback by the words she had spoken. He shuffled backwards and I could see the slight tremble in his hands, "What did you just say little girl?"
"The way I see it you are going to kill me either way!" She replied and I wanted her to shut up, "So if my blood is going to be the first to be spilled then so be it but know this, you won’t be living this place alive! The goddess Naktus gives life but she can take them just as fast when she senses one of her own threatened from the great beyond!"
"Do not test me little girl! I will do it!" He yelled, the knife in his hand trembling and I feared he might act out on impulse.
You know what? Fuck this, there’s no time! I thought to myself before my hands reached behind me and I pull out a dagger, "Keeper!" I yelled loudly.
The keeper already understanding my intent, grabbed the draumheimiers hand and sank her tiny teeth into it. The man released a hiss as he dropped the knife and the keeper ran forward. The rest of the men made a move to attack but the women were ready.
Positioning their arrows in place, they let it fly and it stuck the draumheimiers who tried to reach for the keeper. The whole of the hallway was filled with grunts but they were relentless, they advanced towards us.
"GET THE KEEPER TO SAFETY!" I yelled as someone reached for the keeper.
"ATTACK, KILL THEM ALL!" The man yelled just as the men advanced towards us.
And so the battle began!
Men clashed against women, we all brought out our swords and our shields to protect ourselves. There was nothing gentle or delicate about the way we fought. The sounds of metals clashing echoed painfully, mixed with the sound of anguish and rage. I collided with a man who attacked me with a heavy broad sword. I managed to block out the attack that sent a jolt through my entire arm and I also lost my balance but I righted myself at the last moment. I gritted my teeth, twisted my wrist and thrust my blade upward, cutting in underneath his armor.
The next man came towards me, his sword aiming straight for my protruding belly. Bastard! I thought as I grabbed his arm under my arm and with my other hand I slapped his weapon away then twisted his hand to the side the wrong way. There was a sharp crack and he screamed for a minute but I just spun out of the way and threw my fist to his face and then I grabbed my sword and stabbed him in the chest.
Breathing heavily, I made a move when all of a sudden, I felt a kick in my stomach. The force was so sharp that it momentarily stole the breath from under me. I drew in a deep breath as I tried to calm myself down. A breath hitched in my throat as I felt another sharp pain and this time I grunted softly.
A contraction, a damn contraction in the middle of a battle!
One of the men must have looked at me and thought I looked vulnerable. From my peripheral vision I saw him swinging at me, trying to attack me from the side but I pushed myself down to a crouching position and the blade sliced through the air. I stood up fast ignoring the pain I felt in my abdomen and stabbed him in his thigh.
Almost on reflex, his hand reached forward and slapped me hard across on the face. I stumbled forward and fell down to the ground. I caught myself before I could hit my belly down on the ground. The man grabbed me by my ankles and dragged me forward.
I screamed a little and then he turned me on my back then got on top of me and squeezed my neck really title. "Should have stayed hidden princess!"
I reached up trying to get him off me but I couldn’t. I reached behind me trying to get my weapon but it seemed so far away. I didn’t give up, I continued to reach behind me for the sword.
A finger brushed the hilt and that gave me the strength I needed to continue to reach forward. The man above me squeezed harder and I could feel blackness at the corner of my eyes but even then I pushed forward. I scraped back with desperation trying to reach for the sword until finally my hand wrapped around the hilt.
Without thinking, I grabbed the sword and with speed I thrust the blade into his side. I watched the man’s eyes widen in surprise before he gagged, his mouth full of crimson as he stared down at me and I couldn’t tell if it was shock or pain. But I didn’t dwell I twisted the sword up farther into his side.
Warm blood dropped down on me and I stared at the man as I watched the light in his eyes slowly fade away before he slumped. With a grunt, I shoved him off me, laying down on the ground to catch my breath while a hand rested on my belly. I could feel the war around me still go on, the ring of crashing steels and the thud of shields or a body hitting the ground.
The sound of barked commands along with that of along with arrows in a flight but for a moment all I could feel was just the steady beating of my own heart and the gentle kick of my baby who was eager to come into this world.
Please, please if you are listening, just give me a little bit of time! Please just help us through this, please! I prayed to the goddess and hope she was listening.
"DAHLIA!"
A voice suddenly yelled at me, the sound guttural and filled with desperation. Panting, I pushed myself up the ground. I turned only to find one of the women warrior being held down by two guards. Groaning, I picked myself up from the ground, the grip on my sword tightening as I tried to run forward but another wave of contraction hit me, this one fierce than the last.
I doubled over in pain, stopping to catch my breath for a minute and then when I raised a head up, it was already too late because the only thing I could see was nothing but a fist heading towards my face and then, temporary blackness!
