THE Knight's Hidden Princess -
Chapter 153: He Had It Coming
Chapter 153: He Had It Coming
REAGAN POV
For some strange reason, the air felt colder. Almost as if it could feel the anticipation of the presence that dwelled within this walls. The torch on the walls flickered as I walked past, heading towards the dungeon. Nikolai and Killian walked next to me, their expression stern as we headed towards the darkest part on the dungeon where we kept the most notorious of our prisoners that have been captured over the years, the ones whose names alone and their backgrounds would make even the bravest of warriors shiver.
The atmosphere was thick and the only sound that could be heard was the sound of our footsteps and the occasional drip of water from the stones above. As we got closer towards the final cell, I could feel the shift in the air, it wasn’t just cold anymore. Now, it felt alive.
Nikolai stepped forward and peeked through the small entrance of the iron door. His jaw clenched as he turned to look at us, "Looks like he’s awake."
"Good, open it!" I said and Nikolai turned to do as he asked.
The door opened with a loud clang that echoed through the corridor. A blast of cold air burst out but I remained unflinching and stared at the cell where it was lit by only a single torch. Flames flared uncontrollably causing deformed shadows on the stone wall and inside of it was a single man, bound in chains on his wrist and ankles.
The man sat still on the chair in a confident manner as if the dungeon served as his personal royal chambers. His hands rested on his knees, his fingers slightly bent. He was huge man, his head was shaved clean and he had tribal tattoos running from his head to his neck to his head. He also had a bushy brown beard that was plaited and decorated with shiny golden trinkets that twinkles in the dim light.
The man raised his head and his lips slowly curved upwards to reveal his teeth. "Hellhound!" He called his voice thick with an accent.
I nodded my head towards Killian who took off the shirt he was wearing. The man slowly turned his head to look at Killian with a look of amusement on his face. "Aw, pretty boy doesn’t want to get his shirt dirty."
"Well, I guess you could say that." Killian said as he came to stand in front of him, "You ready to talk now."
The man shrugged as he stared at Killian. "I thought that was what I was doing or is there another word your people call it."
Killian chuckled as he turned to look at me. "Looks like he’s got a bit of a mouth on him, doesn’t he?" He asked me but my focus was on the man who was watching the whole thing with amusement.
This man wasn’t terrified of us because there wasn’t any ounce of fear in his body. Even when we had grabbed him, it was like he admitted defeat a little too easy, like he wanted to be taken. The man could hold his own in a fight. He was very good but all of a sudden he had simply surrendered.
Even back then, I found it really weird that he had. The way he had simply smiled while raising his hands as he lowered himself down to his knees. He purposely made himself get captured and now he was sitting in the cell like a king even though he was bound like an animal and I now understood he doesn’t fear us.
He wanted us to fear him!
Too bad, I don’t fear anything and he doesn’t seem to know that yet and I do not plan on letting him know anything. He could enjoy his little moment of thinking he has power over us but I was going to get what I want from him.
I stepped closer, boots scraping against the stone floor. The man’s dark eyes followed my every move, a smile dancing on his lips as his eyes shown with amusements like I was some sort of entertainment.
"Tell us what you know about the Ember dust!" I demanded.
The man leaned closer as he stared at me. "Why? You itching to get some?"
One look at Killian and he stepped forward and threw a punch at his face. The man’s head whipped to the side from the impact. Groaning, he cracked his neck as he turned to look at Killian. "You know you hit like a girl."
Killian smiled but just came to stand right next to me. "Why are you flooding our kingdom with the drugs?"
"Shit." The man cursed as he raised his head up to look at us. "You see this is what I detest about you Iravians, you find yourself in any problem and then you blame the rest of us for it."
"Why is the king buying the drugs from you?"
The man’s gaze snapped to look at Nikolai and then his gaze drifted between the three of us. He then snorted as if he had just found something funny. "Well then, this is interesting. Seems, someone has been running his mouth." He said more to himself than us, "Can I ask you something?"
"No." Killian responded sharply.
"We ask the questions, not you!"
The man ignored them as he took in a deep breath to ask the question. "The king doesn’t know you are doing this does he?" He asked and neither one of us answered, "Which meant this interrogation is off the books."
The man released a loud laughter that was echoed round the dungeon walls. We said nothing as we continued to watch the man laugh loudly almost as if he knew something that he wasn’t supposed to know. He continued to laugh loudly, his shoulders shaking with each sound that he produced.
"Now this is just very interesting, rebels in uniform." He said, his voice thick with mock admiration as he stared up at us. "Since this is off the books, I’m just going to assume that this is something personal which isn’t good because I wonder what the king would feel if he knows his hound isn’t being so loyal to him." He said with a pout.
I didn’t blink. Didn’t even offer any reaction of the sort. Instead I began to circle him slowly, "Tell me, what is your name, traveler?"
"Sorry, I don’t do face name basis." The man said, "But you can call me Skornir."
"The scarred one, nice!" I said as I continued to circle him, "Tell me, Skornir. What is it you’ve heard about me?"
"That you are a knight to be feared." Skornir replied, "But I just think you are just like any other nobles, using their title over the weak little folk."
I chuckled, the only first real reaction as I mulled over his words. I was right, he didn’t fear me and that was a big mistake on his part. I laughed deeply as I stopped in front him making sure he could see my face and know there was nothing funny about everything he just said.
"You think I use my title as a shield?" I breathed out as I leaned down so he could see me, "But the truth is Skornir, I could give a fuck about a title because I don’t need it to destroy anything that is in my part. Besides, the name hellhound was given to me because I earned it and I promise you Skonir by the time we are done with you are going to know just why my victims live in fear."
Skornir’s teeth set and I got to give it to the man, he knows how to hide his fear. But I was also good at that, which means that I was good at reading when someone was trying too hard to hide his fear. "You really think you are going to break me."
"Oh." I cocked my head at him, "You really need to be careful how fast you dismiss fear. It’s normal, fear keeps people alive but you think it’s absence makes you strong, you’ve gone so long without it, you’ve mistaken it for brashness."
He chuckled, though the sound did nothing to brighten his eyes. "Well you can’t get me to tell you kalk!" He spat at me.
Kalk was his language for shit!
I slowly straightened myself as I turned to look Killian. "You sure you can do this?"
"I’ll be fine!" Killian said but his gaze was on Skornir, "Besides, Nikolai is right here, he won’t let me lose control."
Skornir watched the exchange between us but all I did was just gave Killian a nod before I went out of the dungeon. I had not taken more than five steps when I heard the loud screams of Skornir echo down the corridor.
His screams of agony followed me and I didn’t stop walking. It echoed off the stone walls but I didn’t stop.
He had it coming!
