Chapter 106: Don’t Make Me Regret It
REAGAN POV
"I still can’t believe you rode all the way out here just to come save me." I said to Dahlia who was seated on my horse, she was riding with me.
Dahlia didn’t respond and continued to stare ahead. A silent protest to when I demanded she ride with me instead of riding on her own horse like she initially wanted. I had told her there was no way she was going to be riding alone when there was no telling how safe the road was going to be.
Of course, Dahlia being the stubborn dark haired beauty that she was argued with me that she could handle herself just fine but eventually I won the argument by claiming that if she doesn’t get her sweet ass on the saddle, I will strap her to it myself.
I was jerk, I know that but I had no choice! The more time we spent arguing the more time we give the Kashkil reinforcements time to catch up to us.
Giving me a look that could freeze an entire nation, Dahlia decided to climb up the saddle while I hauled myself right next to her, not missing the curses she mumbled under her breath and then the silent treatment began.
Now riding through the thick forest, I could feel her annoyance radiating off of her in waves. She moves away as far as she could, her entire body movement stiff but still staying mounted on the horse. Anytime her body touched mine, she would immediately grow rigid and scoot farther away from me.
I chuckled deeply while keeping my hands firm on the reins. "You know you move any farther you are going to fall off the damn horse." I said but Dahlia said nothing and just continued to stare straight ahead, completely ignoring me as if I didn’t exist, as if I wasn’t sitting directly at her back.
Nikolai who was riding right next to me, smirked almost as if he was enjoying it, fucking bastard! I thought to myself as I stared back at Dahlia who looked rigid, she must be uncomfortable.
"You should try to relax." I said, "It’s a long ride and if you continue to stay frigid like a block of ice, you will end up hurting yourself."
"You should quit telling me what to do." Dahlia hissed at me.
Ah ha! We getting somewhere! "Oh pardon me sweetness, I just wanted to make sure you were comfortable."
"If you truly wanted that, then you should have given me my own horse."
"Aww princess, still going to sulk about that?" I teased but got surprised when all of a sudden Dahlia reared backwards and head butted me right in the fucking nose.
I grunted loudly as pain hit my entire face. "Ow! What the fuck was that for, woman?
Dahlia turned to look back at me with a sweet smile on her face. "Oopsies!"
"Oopsies? Oops_Fucking hells woman, you broke my nose!" I growled at her.
Dahlia shrugged at me in response, "Well now you know better than to test me next time."
A couple of laughter went round among my men that were riding with us, Heather and Eddie included but they immediately kept quiet when I turned to glare at them. Not Nikolai though! Fucking bastard release a bark of laughter as he doubled over on his horse.
"It’s official, I just fell in love people!" He wheezed as he stared at Dahlia.
"Back off Nik!" I snapped while maintain a grip on nose and thankfully it wasn’t broken but almost.
I glared at the back of Dahlia’s head. For a princess she has quite a strong head and what exactly was her made off, Iron?
I didn’t say anything else after that, just continued to glare at the back of her head and maintained my distance. If she wanted to be frigid all day till her body cramps up then that was fine by me! I thought to myself while still keeping my hands on the reins of the horse.
It was quiet for a few minutes when I leaned closer towards her. I could still her tense when I got close to her but all I did was just whisper in her ear words I should have uttered from the very beginning before thing escalated further.
"Thank you." I said, "Thank you for saving me."
I could feel Dahlia tense up right in front of me, her posture became different after I spoke. But still, she said nothing though after a while she relaxed. Not completely though, even though she no longer backed away and ceased being rigid, she now remained still.
I didn’t say anything else after that, I allowed her to take her time to respond without seeking any answers from her. I had no right to after all. Meanwhile, she has every right to dismiss me completely through the rest of the ride, it was what I deserved.
We continued to ride in silence without any significant discomfort. I continued to maneuver us through the woods, it was going to be dark soon so we will need to set up camp somewhere.
With a single nod from me, I sent Nikolai ahead to check which surroundings to see which side was safe for us to camp. The forest growth was thick and the dwindling daylight produced shadowy shapes between the tree trunks.
Nikolai soon came to me and then proceeded to lead us to a clearing where it was safe to camp for the night. I dismounted from the horse near the clearing but Dahlia refused my help when she climbed down without taking my hand.
Of course, she did! I thought to myself smirking when she winced at the discomfort she felt while gently massaging her joint.
I denied myself the opportunity to make fun of her decision while I observed her discomfort from the horseback riding. I would let her remain stubborn since that was what she decided. The signs of her body strain from riding became evident to me but I managed to look away from it and turned to look at the men.
"Alright, we will set up camp here!" I turned to Heather and Eddie, "There’s firewood nearby, you two grab them, I will go hunt with the rest of the men to see what we can eat tonight." I ordered as I reached aside and pulled out a bow and arrow getting ready to step into the woods with Nikolai and the rest of my men.
From my peripheral vision, I could see Dahlia approaching me. "You are not coming with so don’t bother asking."
A soft scoff came from my right. "Don’t worry, I wasn’t." She said but I noticed the way she pursed her lips I knew her to be lying. "Don’t make me regret it though!"
I turned to look at her fully, confused at what she was saying. "What?"
"You thanked me for saving your life, don’t make me regret it." She said and there was something in her gaze the playfulness slip from my face and my throat tighten.
"I won’t." I responded, saying the words before I could think too hard but not just saying them, they were a promise.
