Chapter 36: Dire Wolves

Chapter 36: Dire Wolves

Eve and Alaric sat facing each other inside the carriage.

[ Are you hurt? ] Eve showed her pad to Alaric, gazing at him with concern.

Alaric’s face hardened as he recalled his encounter with the parrot. Silvester was now put in a cage, hung outside the carriage.

"I’m fine. I only got a few scratches," he simply replied.

"Next time, don’t leave without telling me. I thought you were kidnapped again," He added in his reprimanding tone.

He got worried about her when she suddenly disappeared in front of Annie’s gravestone.

Eve chewed on her lower lip guiltily and nodded in response.

"Are you really taking that parrot as your pet? If you want we can adopt a dog or a cat. That parrot is a bit violent. It might hurt you." Alaric was against the idea of keeping Silvester. Who would want a violent aggressive bird with a sharp tongue?

Eve put on a pleading look as she wrote.

[ The bird is so adorable. I like the bright colors of his feathers. Please allow me to keep him as my pet. I assure you... this bird won’t attack me. ]

Alaric could only rub his temples as he heaved a sigh of defeat. He couldn’t refuse Eve’s request, especially when he was staring at him with her doe-eyes.

"Fine. Keep it. But on one condition... if that parrot attacks you, I will roast him immediately."

Eve swallowed hard, pitying Silvester. Two men– Alaric and Gideon, were already threatening to roast the poor parrot if he ever misbehaved.

’Sigh. I have to protect this poor bird from these men.’ Eve thought to herself.

After a while, Eve patted the space in her side, motioning for Alaric to sit beside her. Alaric didn’t get her signal at first. He just stared at her in confusion.

"What do you want?" He asked her.

Pursing her lips, Eve rose from her seat and transferred next to Alaric’s side. Her sudden action surprised Alaric. Before he could say a word, Eve cupped his face.

Alaric’s body stiffened at the feeling of her soft hands on his face. ’What is she going to do?’

Eve looked at him intently, her hands still cupping his face. It did not take long before Eve leaned in, her face inching closer and closer to his.

’Is she going to kiss me?’ Alaric pondered to himself, slowly closing his eyes as he anticipated a kiss.

However, several seconds had already passed, but her lips still hadn’t touched his. Frowning in impatience, Alaric opened his eyes, only to meet her innocent gaze as she scanned his face.

It turned out that Eve was just trying to check the scratches on his face caused by Silvester’s pecking.

’Damn! I had a wrong assumption.’ His face reddened instantly at that realization. He misunderstood her action, expecting her to initiate a kiss.

After making sure that he only had a few small scratches, Eve smiled at him, gently releasing his face. Alaric groaned inwardly, feeling embarrassed and disappointed.

Meanwhile, clueless about Alaric’s wrong assumption, Eve shifted her gaze to the carriage window, watching the scenery. This was her first time embarking on a journey, leaving the palace.

A faint smile settled on her lips, savoring this moment as though she had acquired her freedom, away from the palace’s torment.

She was enjoying the peaceful and calm scenery of the forest when suddenly the carriage shook violently, followed by the scream of the knight from outside.

"General! A pack of dire wolves has blocked our path!"

The sound of loud guttural and menacing growls echoed from the outside.

Eve glanced at Alaric worriedly. ’Are we being attacked by wolves?’

"Protect the carriage! Don’t stop." Alaric gave his command to the knights escorting them.

He grabbed his sword and glanced at Eve. "Just stay here and don’t come out."

Without waiting for her response, Alaric opened the door of the carriage and jumped out. To secure Eve’s safety, he quickly closed the carriage door.

For some unknown reason, her body shivered in fear upon seeing Alaric jump out with urgency. Part of her didn’t want him to go.

"Please be careful!" she murmured, holding her hands together.

The snarling sound became louder. The dire wolves started to move, attacking Alaric’s group. She could hear the sound of running paws in different directions along with the clashing of swords.

Eve was torn between staying inside as Alaric suggested or opening the door to see him fight. In just a brief moment, something hard bumped the carriage. She could even hear the scratching sound of sharp claws, resonating against the carriage wall.

"What is happening outside?"

"Scary Wolves! Scary Wolves!" Silvester’s squeaky voice reverberated outside.

"Oh! Is Silvester alright?" Eve murmured anxiously. She got worried for the safety of the parrot. He was caged outside the carriage. What if the dire wolves ate him?

Eve could no longer hold her curiosity. She was about to take a peek through the carriage window when suddenly two large wolves leaped forward, trying to destroy the windows,

She instinctively stepped back and accidentally lost her balance. She fell and her body hit the floor.

Thud.

She winced in pain at the impact. She tried to get up but the carriage shook once more after getting attacked by several dire wolves!

She crawled on her knees to go to the opposite side, distancing herself from the window where she saw the two dire wolves. But before she could reach the opposite side, the carriage overturned from the outside force, causing her body to flip in the air.

Just before she could grab onto anything, she found herself being thrown out of the already wide-open door of the carriage.

Thud!

Her frail body was flung to the ground.

"Aah!" She winced at the sharp pain of her back hitting the uneven ground.

She tried to get up, looking around for help. But to her dismay, no one noticed her as the knights were busy fighting several dire wolves.

She forced her aching body to stand. But before she could leave her spot, a large ferocious dire wolf caught sight of her and started to run in her direction. Flashing its sharp teeth, the wolf leaped forward, ready to bite her.

Eve froze in her spot, unable to move. She just stood there, waiting for the ferocious beast to devour her.

"Eve, run!!!" Alaric’s loud scream was heard from the distance.
