Chapter 169: Success

A ruckus happened inside the castle when Enox’s group was spotted by the royal guards.

"We have intruders!" The royal knights alerted their comrades.

Enox hadn’t located Chancellor Igrin’s location yet. But now, they were being chased by Zephyra’s knights.

"Captain! You should go and flee. We will keep them occupied." Enox’s comrade said, urging him to escape.

"We will cover for you!" another comrade spoke up.

Enox clenched his fists. Escaping was not his option. "I appreciate your help. But I won’t leave without Chancellor Igrin. I will continue searching for him. Go and hide for your safety!"

Enox got separated from his comrades. He knew that they might die on this mission. However, he would prioritize his duty over his life.

As his comrades lured the guards, he continued searching for Chancellor Igrin. It did not take long before he spotted him.

"What’s going on?" Chancellor Igrin asked the royal guards who passed by his pavilion.

"Men in black infiltrated the palace. We need to check your room. They might be hiding around here," The royal guard informed Igrin. They were the ones who knocked on his door, interrupting his sleep.

"There is no one here!" Chancellor Igrin insisted.

Enox just watched them from his hiding spot, waiting for the right time to subdue Chancellor Igrin. He could only make a move if those guards would leave his quarters.

The guards didn’t trust Chancellor Igrin completely because he came from another kingdom. They had to check his room. After a few minutes, they stepped out of his room as they didn’t find suspicious men. Chancellor Igrin was indeed alone.

When the royal guards left, Enox came out of his hiding spot to capture Chancellor Igrin. He barged into his room.

Chancellor Igrin was surprised when someone entered his room. "Who the hell are you?" He grabbed his sword to fight the intruder.

He wondered if this man was sent by Kingdom Averion to rescue Alaric and Princess Eve.

"Chancellor Igrin," Enox mumbled, removing his mask.

The old man gasped upon recognizing Enox. ’Damn it. So Prince Cassian sent someone to rescue Sylvana. Do they know about my betrayal?’

Chancellor Igrin was contemplating what he should do. He didn’t know if Crown Prince Cassian had discovered his betrayal or not.

’I need to ask him.’

"Enox, have you seen Sylvana? Are you here to rescue us?" Igrin asked him, trying to figure out if Enox was still clueless about him being a traitor.

"I haven’t seen Lady Sylvana. I’m here to rescue you," he lied. Enox wanted Chancellor Igrin to believe that everyone was still unaware of his betrayal and conspiracy.

Chancellor Igrin rejoiced inwardly. "Alright. I’m coming with you. Shall we go and find Sylvana?"

"A separate team is going to find her, Chancellor. You have to come with me. We have to hurry. We can’t afford to get caught here." Enox had to escape together with Chancellor Igrin. He was on high alert because Chancellor Igrin might betray him along the way. He was very cautious as they left the pavilion.

’I have to knock him down so that he won’t know about the secret passage.’ Enox thought to himself.

Enox let Chancellor Igrin lead the way as he stayed on guard. The royal knights were still chasing after his comrades. They lured the knights in the opposite direction.

Just when they were near the entrance of the secret passage, Enox hit Chancellor Igrin’s neck, making him pass out. His two comrades who stayed at the entrance assisted him in carrying Chancellor Igrin.

"We should leave now! Our comrades will try to catch up." Enox said.

Unfortunately, the other members of the rescue team had already been apprehended by the Zephyra’s royal knights. They were captured and sent to the prison fortress right away for interrogation.

The rescue mission succeeded, but four comrades were captured by the enemy. There was a high chance that they would get killed.

Meanwhile, Crown Prince Cassian, Captain Avan, and Sylvana were still waiting outside the castle, hoping for Enox’s team’s safe return. It did not take long before they saw three people running toward them.

"Your Highness! Enox is here! They captured Chancellor Igrin!" Captain Avan reported in his elated voice.

Prince Cassian stared at Igrin sharply. The chancellor was still unconscious.

"Good job. Tie him up!" He commanded Enox.

Enox obeyed him right away.

"Where are the others?" Captain Avan asked.

"The royal guards found us. I got separated from the other team. They lured the guards, helping me to escape. I’m not certain if they are captured or not. I will wait for them here." Enox felt responsible for his comrades’ lives. He couldn’t leave them behind. He was hoping they were still alive.

"Alright! Enox can stay here. Let’s return to our Inn." Prince Cassian said before stepping into the carriage.

At the palace...

King Zaraki summoned Chancellor Gustav, asking him of the situation. They weren’t prepared for tonight’s attack. He wondered if the intruders were connected to the rebel group.

"Did Eve betray us? Is she the one who helped those intruders?" King Zaraki questioned Chancellor Gustav. He was furious.

"Your Majesty, we captured four men. We have just found out that those warriors are from the Kingdom Eldara. They are still being interrogated by the captain of the royal guards. It seems that they succeeded in taking the Seer and the chancellor. They are no longer in their respective quarters," Chancellor Gustav reported.

King Zaraki slammed his fists on his table. "How could this happen? How come our enemies can easily sneak into the palace? What are the guards doing? They failed to prevent the enemies from entering my palace!" He said through gritted teeth.

"Find out where they passed through! If not using the main gates, how could they enter the palace?" King Zaraki had a nagging feeling. There might be a hidden passage in the palace that he didn’t know about.

"Yes, your Majesty. I shall dig deeper and find out," Chancellor Gustav responded obediently.

"How about Alaric? You didn’t get any information from him?"

"No, Your Majesty. He never said anything. He kept his mouth shut despite the torture he received during the intense interrogation."

King Zaraki massaged his temples, his face contorting in too much anger.

"Punish all the guards who were on duty tonight! They must serve as an example to the others. They have a duty to fulfill—if they can’t do that, it’s better to send them to the battlefield!" King Zaraki gave his command.

To appease the angry king, Chancellor Gustav made sure to punish everyone– Physical punishment for everyone.

After giving his instructions, King Zaraki dismissed Chancellor Gustav. He then summoned his wives to his chamber to satisfy him and ease his frustration. This was his way of venting his anger and stress. It would be a long night in the king’s chamber.

Despite the chaos in the palace, Eve and Alaric were lost in their own world. Alaric cuddled her after their passionate moment in her chamber.
