The Hero's Forsaken Princess -
Chapter 135: Their Journey
Chapter 135: Their Journey
Alaric, Princess Eve, and their comrades continued their journey. They were smoothly going forward. If this pace continued, they might reach Zephyra’s border in just four weeks.
For now, they decided to enjoy this trip together with Princess Eve. They passed through different villages. Eve was so happy to meet other people on their way.
"Alaric, I think we need to take a rest first," Gideon suggested. He was riding the carriage with Princess Eve and Alaric.
"Okay. We will camp here tonight and take turns for guarding duty. Randolf, please tell them." Alaric agreed since Eve seemed tired. She was sleeping on his lap right now.
The two silently observed Eve’s sleeping figure, both of them were preoccupied by something.
However, between the two men, Gideon looked more troubled and uneasy.
"This is the first time I’ve seen you getting anxious. Are you scared that you might die?" Alaric broke his silence, engaging in a conversation with him.
Gideon just laughed it off. "You are just overthinking."
Alaric shrugged his shoulders.
"I guess you are worried about Eve’s safety. Am I right?" Alaric said, trying to figure out what was troubling Gideon’s mind.
Gideon fell silent for a moment, his gaze remained fixed on Eve.
"You are right. I’m worried about her. I feel like something bad is going to happen in this mission. Alaric, there is still time to retreat. For Eve’s sake." Gideon tried to convince Alaric one last time.
But Alaric shook his head. "I’m doing this for her. No need to freak out. I will protect her. And I’m more at ease knowing you are here."
Gideon folded his arms over his chest as he glared at Alaric. "You are really determined to exploit me. Clever man!"
Alaric gestured for him to lower her voice. "Shhh! Don’t speak loud. I can still hear you. I don’t want Eve to wake up. She needs more sleep. Her body is still adjusting to the long journey."
Gideon quickly apologized to Alaric for raising his voice earlier.
"By the way, what is your plan? Do you know that Kingdom Zephyra is very strict in guarding their borders? We can’t enter without an entry pass. How will you solve this problem?" Gideon asked him curiously.
"You are very familiar and knowledgeable about Kingdom Zephyra’s rule. It seems that you’ve been there before. How does it feel to live in that kingdom?" Alaric asked, trying to get useful information from Gideon.
Gideon shook his head while clicking his tongue. "General Alaric, that’s not fair. How could you answer my questions with another question? Are you deliberately avoiding my questions? Don’t you trust me?"
Alaric just let out a soft chuckle. "Yes, I don’t trust you. However... When it comes to safeguarding Eve, I know I can completely trust you."
Gideon was dumbfounded for a moment after hearing those words from Alaric.
"I don’t know if I should feel glad or be upset by your words. Sigh."
Alaric chuckled once more. Then he gazed down, gently stroking Eve’s head.
"Gideon, I don’t want you to become our enemy. So I am giving you my trust. Please don’t betray us." Alaric was so serious.
Among them, only Gideon was the outsider. His reputation as Black Hunter didn’t guarantee his loyalty to Alaric.
Alaric thought he shouldn’t lower his guard and be wary of him. Right now, Gideon was like a double-edged sword. If it was not used wisely, then it might backfire on them.
Meanwhile, Gideon looked out through the carriage window.
"Betrayal..." he murmured, smiling bitterly.
Alaric glanced at him with conflicting thoughts. Something was off with Gideon ever since they left the palace.
"Just continue doubting me, Alaric. Always be suspicious of me. At least, you won’t be disappointed if ever I try to betray you and Eve."
"Are you arguing again?" Eve interrupted the two. She woke up.
"Of course not!" Alaric and Gideon said in unison.
Eve giggled as she darted her gaze back and forth between Gideon and Alaric.
"I’ll be watching the two of you. No more fighting in front of me. Understand?" Eve warned them.
"Yes, Princess. We won’t disobey you," Gideon responded with a mischievous glint in his eyes.
Eve nodded with a smile. Then she glanced at Alaric, waiting for his reply.
Alaric could only sigh in defeat. "I understand, my dear wife. Don’t worry. Gideon and I are just talking about this mission. We are not arguing."
"Is it true?" Eve asked Gideon.
Gideon bobbed his head in response.
"Where are we now?" Eve sat up, looking at the carriage window. It was getting dark outside.
"We are still in Averion’s territory. It will take one week to reach our kingdom’s border. Then we will take the shortest route going to Kingdom Zephyra." Alaric explained to Princess Eve.
"Since it’s getting dark. We decided to camp here tonight and rest. We will resume our journey at dawn. You should go back to sleep. I’ll prepare our dinner."
Alaric stood up to leave the carriage. But Eve grabbed his hand. "Let me help you. I’m no longer sleepy."
"Gideon, Come with us." Eve invited him so that he wouldn’t feel out of place.
"Sure. I want to see how General Alaric prepares dinner. I hope he won’t poison my food," Gideon said jokingly.
"Hmm. I’m not forcing you to eat my cooking. You can starve yourself to death!" Alaric spat back at him, smirking.
Eve could only shake her head helplessly. The two won’t stop their funny bickering.
Alaric and Gideon approached the third carriage which was carrying their food supplies. The other knights already collected wood to make a bonfire. It would also be used for cooking.
As everyone was busy with their respective tasks, Eve sensed something from a nearby forest. She felt like someone was calling her.
As though she was being compelled, Eve began to stride toward the nearby forest. She continued walking without informing Alaric and Gideon. No one noticed that Eve had already disappeared, heading toward the forest.
