Chapter 110: The Children in the Slum
Chapter 110: The Children in the Slum
Princess Eve, Alaric, and Crown Prince Cassian arrived at the slum, which was usually dark, damp, and moldy. This was one of the reasons why crime was rampant in this area.
Eve looked around as she watched her surroundings. Poor families lived in dilapidated houses that had broken windows, collapsing roofs, and vines growing through the cracks in the old walls.
Alaric covered Eve’s nose using his handkerchief. The surrounding area had a smelly scent because of poor hygiene and sanitation.
"You should stay in the carriage. My knights and I will take care of the business here," Alaric said, worrying about Eve.
Unlike Crown Prince Cassian and Princess Eve, Alaric was accustomed to the smell of the slums, having lived there since childhood. His main concern right now was Eve. He was afraid that Eve might fall ill from inhaling the foul odor of the surroundings.
But Eve shook her head. "No. I want to do this myself."
’This is the place where Alaric and all the members of the fifth battalion came from. They lived here. This is the place where they grew up before becoming a palace knight.’ Eve paused for a moment, watching the people around them.
There were lots of weak and sick people– old people, children, and women. Some of them were just sleeping on the cold dirty street. They didn’t have enough food or medicine. More people could die from hunger and untreated diseases.
’I thought I had suffered enough for living in the palace. Now I realize that I’m still more fortunate than Alaric and his knights. I know... they suffered more than me so I don’t have the right to complain about my situation.’
’They decided to become a soldier... a knight protecting our kingdom... sacrificing their lives just to provide food and financial support to their respective families living in the slum. The situation of their families had improved a little, however, the majority of the people in this slum area are still suffering from poverty.’ Eve’s heart constricted at that thought.
She couldn’t help but feel sad and sorry for those people. Though they were poor families, they were still the subjects of this kingdom. King Solomon and the royal family should do something to improve the ways of living of people in this slum area.
"Only nobles get rich... the poor suffer. This is the harsh reality of life in this kingdom..." Eve softly mumbled, making everyone fall silent.
Crown Prince Cassian didn’t know what to say. Kingdom Eldara faced a similar situation. Listening to Eve, he could tell that she was disappointed that these people had received no help from the royal family or the nobles.
The poor people only suffered while the wealthy ones got all the privileges.
Alaric was about to say something when suddenly a group of small children ran in his direction.
"Our heroes are here! Big Bro Alaric is back!" The elder kid screamed as he informed everyone. He recognized Alaric right away.
Alaric and his knights frequently visited the slum area, providing them with some relief food packs from their own pockets. A portion of their salaries as palace knights was spent on these young children.
In just a brief moment, the children surrounded Alaric and the other knights, cheerfully greeting them. Prince Cassian frowned and instinctively pulled Eve beside him, avoiding contact with the dirty children.
However, Alaric and his knights happily conversed with the children, unbothered by their ragged appearances.
Eve couldn’t help but smile as she witnessed the heartwarming interaction between the children and the knights. She admired Alaric more after seeing this scene.
’Annie is right. My husband is a good man. He is a brave warrior with a kind heart.’ Eve glanced at Alaric, feeling so proud of him.
Without hesitation, Eve removed the cover of her nose and strode toward Alaric and the children.
"Princess Evelina don’t–" Crown Prince Cassian wanted to stop her. But she just gave him a reassuring smile.
"May I join you and play with you all?" Eve spoke up, catching everyone’s attention.
The children were rendered speechless upon seeing Eve. Their innocent eyes gazed at her with admiration and awe. Most of them were mesmerized by Princess Eve’s beauty.
"Big Bro Alaric, who is this beautiful lady in front of us? Is she a goddess? Or an angel?" a small, slender boy with freckles asked Alaric in an elated voice.
Alaric and the other knights let out a soft chuckle when they heard that.
Alaric crouched down to meet the child’s eyes at the same level before saying, "Leon, this woman is Eve. She is not a goddess or an angel, but she is a hero’s wife. She is my wife."
Leon and the other children gasped upon hearing that. The children walked closer to them, surrounding Eve and Alaric. All of them were staring at Eve, assessing her for a long moment. They even darted their gazes back and forth between Eve and Alaric.
Some children started whispering to each other. They wanted to say something but they were too shy to speak up in front of Eve. In the end, Leon became the spokesperson for the little ones, whose curious eyes remained fixed on her.
"Lady Eve... is it true that you are Big Bro Alaric’s wife?" Leon asked Eve for confirmation.
Eve nodded with a gentle smile on her face. "Yes. I’m his wife. Why?"
She also crouched down, facing Leon. She reached out, holding his little hand for a handshake. "Nice meeting you, Little Leon."
Leon’s frail face brightened up with joy and excitement because of Eve’s greetings.
"Oh! So, it’s you! Our Big Brother’s First Love!" Leon suddenly blurted out, catching Alaric off guard.
Alaric’s face turned pale almost instantly. He glanced at Leon meaningfully, giving him a warning signal. He even bit his lips and shook his head as though he was telling the child to keep quiet and not to say something more to Eve.
Meanwhile, Eve just glanced at Leon puzzledly. "What do you mean I’m his first love? Do you know who is your Big Bro’s first love?" she probed further, wanting to know more.
