Chapter 276: Chapter 276- The Unknown Western Region
Mar-Yue’s birthday party was being held at Mar-Du’s tent.
It was located in between the male and female Tribe members’ sections, close to the center of the Tribe.
In front of Mar-Du’s tent, there were long tables with adults and children around them.
Most of the adults had missed last night’s Festival, but luckily, they made it to Mar-Yue’s birthday celebration.
However, it could be seen that the atmosphere was more reserved than the festival.
Everyone was seated and scarfing down food while chatting with family in between.
Suddenly, a silence fell over the venue before the several hundred pairs of eyes landed on Sol and Mar-Yue who were walking through the venue towards Mar-Du’s tent.
At first, everyone observed them silently, but someone suddenly smiled and yelled.
"Mar-Yue, happy birthday!"
This triggered a chain reaction as a cacophony of heartfelt wishes of happy birthday rained down on Mar-Yue and Sol.
Mar-Yue smiled and said a few thanks as she walked by the tables.
Both Mar-Yue and Sol were holding hands, but everyone was slightly ignoring Sol.
What happened at the Coming-of-Age Ceremony was still fresh in their minds.
However, they weren’t ignoring him out of dislike or anything. But rather, they didn’t know how to treat him at the moment.
They wouldn’t just suddenly hate him for what he did, but at the same time, they didn’t understand why he did what he did.
And it came down to that, since they didn’t understand then they can’t really voice their opinions on the matter.
They would just rather leave it up to the Tribe Leader, surely, he would explain what was going on to them eventually.
As Sol and Mar-Yue passed through the venue and reached Mar-Du’s large tent, Sol happened to spot Yoon-Jae seated at a table nearby.
He walked over while saying.
"Brother Yoon-Jae, you aren’t coming in?"
Yoon-Jae paused sipping on his wine before he glanced at the tent and shook his head.
"The tension in there is palpable, I’ll pass. Besides, I’ve had my fair share of family drama at the dinner table one too many times already. But good luck, I’ll be out here wishing you success."
Sol forced a smile and scratched his cheek.
Why did it sound like he was about to walk onto a battlefield?
Sol turned and walked over to Mar-Yue, who held his hand before lifting the tent flaps and entering.
Sol sucked in a cold breath of air.
The atmosphere here was noticeably different from the outside. It felt like a heavy fog was gathered in the tent, but this was just the tension almost taking solid form.
At the center of the tent, there was a large table with many delicious foods on there. Meat, soup, noodles, and many more side dishes.
Around the table were Mar-Yue’s sisters.
At the head of the table was Mar-Du, next to him was Mar-Dule and an empty seat.
When Sol and Mar-Yue entered everyone turned to look at them.
Mar-Du smiled and said.
"Mar-Yue, come sit beside Dad."
Mar-Yue nodded and pulled on Sol’s hand as she walked towards the empty chair, however, Mar-Du’s expression turned serious as he glared at Sol and said.
"Sol, your seat is next to my son."
He pointed at the empty chair next to Mar-Dule who forced a smile on his face.
Mar-Yue frowned and was about to say something, but Sol nodded and spoke.
"Okay."
He squeezed Mar-Yue’s hand, and this made her relax a bit.
The two then separated and sat at either side of the table.
Sol greeted everyone as he walked by, and when he sat, he greeted Mar-Tala who was sitting across from him.
After Mar-Yue sat, Mar-Du smiled and spoke.
"We can all eat now in celebration of my daughter’s fourteenth birthday."
With that, it seemed as if everyone’s mouth was watering at the food and were holding themselves back this entire time.
A cacophony of plates shuffling about could be heard as the girls dug in.
Sol was no different, if not for his lion-mane-like hair and slightly pale skin, would think he was part of the family. Well, perhaps if one looked at this scene one would think he was an adopted son, or rather... a son-in-law to be?
After a few mouthfuls of food, Sol leaned over to Mar-Dule and whispered.
"Happy Birthday."
Mar-Dule paused eating and gave Sol a greasy smile.
After swallowing he said.
"You’re the first person who told me that today, thanks."
Mar-Du’s expression along with everyone at the table suddenly changed as if remembering something.
Sol was surprised by that, but Mar-Dule seeing his expression said.
"It’s fine, everyone usually forgets it’s also my birthday until the next day. But I’m used to it. And besides, I like the day after my birthday better because everyone feels guilty by then, and I get a lot of gifts in return."
After Mar-Dule said that Mar-Du and the girl’s expressions became awkward.
"Son, you should eat as much as you can. You’re growing so you need the nutrients."
Mar-Du said as he suddenly took up a large piece of meat from his side of the table and plopped it down in front of Mar-Dule.
"That’s right little brother you should eat up."
All the girls nodded before each of them picked up some of their share of food and passed it along until it reached Mar-Dule.
By the time all this food was in front of Mar-Dule, it was stacked so high it blocked out his face.
Mar-Dule chuckled before he turned to Sol and spoke.
"See?"
Mar-Dule then turned and licked his lips at the piles of food before digging in.
After some time into the meal, a few of the sisters were busy chatting among themselves while the others continued to eat.
However, Sol sensed that the fog of tension had not once decreased. Rather it seems to have gotten thicker as time went by.
Everyone avoided talking about the elephant that was trying to hide in the tent.
Though it was only a matter of time until someone pointed it out.
"Son, how has it been in the Martial Alliance Academy?"
Mar-Du looked at his father and blinked, but then he swallowed the food in his mouth before he answered.
"It’s alright."
"Hm, then how about the Runes and Formation Pavilion?"
Mar-Dule paused before saying.
"I’ve learned a lot in the past year since I’ve become the Head Disciple. Uncle has been helpful as well in answering any inquiries I have."
The Headmaster of the Runes and Formations Pavilion was Mar-Du’s younger brother.
Mar-Du nodded before calmly saying.
"That’s good, as of now we must tighten our hold on the Runes and Formations Pavilion, especially during a time like this."
"Is about the Western Region."
Mar-Dule asked, and everyone couldn’t help but pause eating or chatting to focus on this conversation.
Of course, they were curious about this unknown Western Region.
