Chapter 268: Chapter 268- I Trusted You, But You Lied To Me
All this while, Sol felt like someone who was on the edge of a cliff, holding onto a rope that was tied around his waist while the other end was tied to a large bolder.
His desperate attempts to stop himself from tipping over the cliff were useless and bit by bit he was being pulled over the edge by this strong force.
However, the rope was slowly extending, and the boulder would eventually reach the ground below, but this process was terrifyingly slow.
Even so, he held out as long as he could because that was the only thing he could do. No one was capable of handling this burden with him even if they wanted to, so he could only bear this strong force trying to pull him over the edge alone.
However, just like that the boulder disappeared, and the pressure was no longer trying to pull him over.
Sol finally got the Deep Autumn Flower, and he was now able to save Little Zeel.
However, after bearing this pressure for the past few days and thinking he had a long way to go, now that the boulder had suddenly disappeared, he felt a sense of relief that couldn’t be described with words.
Mar-Yue reacted quickly to catch Sol before he could fall. She lowered him and allowed his head to rest on her knees.
Sol was clutching the Deep Autumn Flower in one hand while using the other to cover his face.
"Are you crying? Let me see."
Sol’s fingers tightened around the stem of the Deep Autumn Flower as he asked.
"Mar-Yue, did you always have the Deep Autumn Flower? Even when I first asked you for it?"
"Yes."
Mar-Yue answered without lying.
"Why? You lied and said you didn’t have it. You made me worry that Little Zeel might die. What if something had happened to him within these four days?"
There was confusion and anger in Sol’s voice. He was immensely grateful for Mar-Yue, but still, she lied to him.
Mar-Yue looked down at Sol and said.
"Don’t be angry. I had my own reasons why I couldn’t reveal the truth that I didn’t take the Deep Autumn Flowers."
"Why?"
Mar-Yue paused before she glanced at the starry night sky and explained.
"I’m sure my brother told you our Father and every Tribe Leader before him tried everything to restore our Giant Race bloodline. That’s why I have so many siblings as well as uncles and aunts. They hoped that one day one of their children would be born with the Giant Race bloodline. But up until now that has never happened, so they resorted to various methods to try and awaken it. One of these methods was to give us rare medicinal plants like the Deep Autumn Flower."
Mar-Yue glanced at the Deep Autumn Flower in Sol’s hand before continuing.
"Father hoped that by giving us such medicinal herbs when we start our cultivations, the sudden spike of Aether Energy in our bodies might act as a trigger to our dormant Giant Race bloodline. This method came about accidentally because of my Eldest Sister. After she absorbed a special herb rich in Earth Aether Energy, a portion of the Giant Race bloodline had awakened in her. Ever since then our Father tried to do the same with us. But with me, there was a high possibility that I might awaken the Giant Race bloodline fully because of what I did to brother."
Sol listened to her before he asked.
"But why don’t you want to awaken the Giant Race bloodline? Is it so bad?"
Mar-Yue bit her lip.
"Yes, it is, because if I awaken it Father is going to take away brother’s right to become the Tribe Leader and give it to me. He wanted to do the same with Eldest Sister, but she refused. He only relented because brother had been born. It was a rule that the next Tribe Leaders chosen are sons, but there is another rule among our Barbarian Race that overrules this, and it states that anyone who fully awakens the Giant Race bloodline should not only become the Tribe Leader of the Bloodline Tribe, but the leader of the entire Barbarian Race."
Mar-Yue finished her explanation, but Sol felt that she wasn’t saying everything. After going through her explanation in his head, he had a speculation in his heart.
"The reason you’re so worried that taking the Deep Autumn Flower will fully awaken the Giant Race bloodline isn’t that you already awakened a portion of it when you took Mar-Dule’s own. If that was the case then your Father wouldn’t be so lax, he would watch you take them. But instead of doing that he just took your word that you did."
Mar-Yue hearing Sol point out the flaw in her words frowned.
"You’re really perceptive huh?"
She paused and then said.
"Yeah, you’re right. With the bit of Giant Race bloodline I have, it’s still impossible for me to awaken it fully even if I took the two Deep Autumn Flowers Father gave me. However, something happened one week after I started cultivating. The bit of Giant Race bloodline I have started to increase. It’s now reached the point where I’m barely able to hide it from Father. And even if I don’t take the Deep Autumn Flowers it’s going to continue to increase until I fully awaken it. Before that happened, I wanted to leave the Eternal Desert."
After a moment of silence, Sol pointed out.
"You said you didn’t take the two Deep Autumn Flowers, does that mean you still have one more? Can I have it just in case one isn’t enough to help Little Zeel?"
"I can’t give it to you because I don’t have it. I sent it back to the Martial Alliance Academy four days ago. It should have arrived by now."
Sol was stunned when he heard that.
"Why didn’t you say anything?"
"I said it now, didn’t I?"
"You-Did you purposely wait until now to tell me so you can see me miserable?"
Sol lifted his hand from his face to look up at Mar-Yue.
Mar-Yue pursed her lips before saying.
"I’m not that cruel, I didn’t tell you because I couldn’t approach you."
"Why?"
Sol was confused.
Mar-Yue’s expression softened as she muttered.
"Because you’re the type of person to smile even when you’re uncomfortable around someone. That’s what brother said."
Sol blinked before he shook his head.
"I wasn’t uncomfortable around you; in fact, it’s the opposite."
Mar-Yue looked down at Sol before she paused. After a moment she lifted her hand and swept back his bangs to see his face.
There were tear stains still on his cheeks from crying just now.
"You really are a crybaby."
Sol smiled.
"Do you not like that?"
Mar-Yue suddenly leaned forward as if to see Sol’s face closer. Halfway there she said.
"If I didn’t like it, then I probably wouldn’t have these feelings for you."
Mar-Yue then closed the other half of the distance and kissed Sol.
When Sol felt Mar-Yue’s lips against his, the first thought that appeared in his mind was that they were soft. The next thought that went through his mind was that they were extremely warm.
However, this pleasant feeling only lasted for a split second as a voice suddenly said from behind.
"So that’s why you were avoiding me?"
Mar-Yue shot up when she heard the voice. When she looked behind her, she saw Mar-Du floating down to the stage from the sky.
"Fa-Father?"
Sol sat up and looked at Mar-Du, but Mar-Du didn’t even glance in his direction. His entire focus was on Mar-Yue.
One would think he would be angry after finding out his daughter blatantly lied to him and betrayed his trust. However, Mar-Du was instead filled with disappointment.
"Mar-Yue, I trusted you, but you lied to me."
