The God of Jesters
Chapter 310 - 5.11.3 Lies for thee, but not for me.

Chapter 310: 5.11.3 Lies for thee, but not for me.

Lies, fabrications, and false personalities. All were required tools when living a life of deception.

Each is used to create a mask when dealing with different individuals or targets in this case. Each catered to target their specific personality kinks and how they see you. But still with enough truth in those masks it makes it harder to be found.

Make them think they have leverage over you.

Make them think they know more about you than you are letting it on.

Make them think that you are a white piece of paper open for just them. Only they understand the real you and no one else.

The same was the case with Henry and in some sense Sheva, who had never seen such emotions on Crow’s face since the early days. In her eyes, he was just a great liar lacking any actual concern for others while driven by overconfidence.

That’s how she saw him, and that’s how perfect his mask was. It was a mixture of his truth and some lies he had fabricated by giving away false weakness on his end. For Henry, this was much easier.

"Who is she?" Henry questioned after looking at Sheva’s towering figure. Obviously not a maid if she knows about Crow’s true origins. "I... Well, let’s go inside and talk. It’s not good to talk in the open."

"Crow, are you seriously bringing an uninvolved party into this mess?"

"He already knows, and as I said, let’s get in before we talk." Considering who was living there and the importance that was given to him. The whole house was built in such a way that no sound ever escaped the walls. Making it a perfect place to convene one’s plan in considering how the world was filled with weird individuals capable of inhuman feats.

So talking in the open was dangerous.

"You are back?" As they entered the house, a voice came again, startling Henry for a bit. Before Crow asks Sheva to bring the girl away after giving her some assurance that he will send Henry back.

"This lady is my Master’s friend, she was with him when all of those things happened and... well it’s very complicated."

"So you are leaving because of her?"

"Obviously not, she is not part of this, instead, one can say she is from the enemy cam.." Crow went silent for a while before sighing. "Why are you even here, just go Henry. There is no time for this. All you are doing is just delaying us."

"Just speak, what are you going to do, otherwise you can forget I will ever leave this place."

"You seriously don’t intend to listen to what I said last night? Do you wish to ruin your life? You are lucky to get a chance to escape."

"Stop repeating your words, I am not here for that. Tell me where you are going with all that getup and how is that woman involved." Henry was not as blind as before, he had picked on how this woman was now an enemy from Crow’s earlier words. So he knows, things were not as simple as they appeared.

"That woman, she was kidnapped by some enemies and to ensure her safety, worked with those said enemies... well you already know who. Its the Knight you met." At the mention of the Knight, the mind of Henry recalled the woman who had chosen to help Rashid while going against the intelligence officer of his country.

Not to mention, that woman was the Kind of knight that was most hated in this country.

Its a well known rumor that Archmage Ikarus didn’t die due to some ritual gone wrong during his research, but there was a hand of Radiant church along with some other forces who were behind it all.

Which can be seen how all a total of two churches and the Radiant Society of the Republic of Sarvilla were barred from the country soon after Ikaros Yethel’s death.

So for Henry, who grew up during the time when the hate of Radiant Hall was at a all time high, he was no so keen about Remira to begin with.

And when learning how she had kidnapped Sheva, who was a companion of his Crow’s master, it can be seen that he didn’t find it much surprising. Or fought the thought that it might have been a misunderstanding, or that Remria might have reason.

No, in his head, she was evil to begin with and this face that Crow spoke just substantiated his belief further. And when hearing what had happened, a series of thoughts formed up in Henry’s head.

’Although she is back, it doesn’t change the fact that she is a traitor in the eyes of investigators, Crow probably put his name on the line to save her.’

"From the orders I have received, it would seem they intend to keep us here until the matter is over. What happens after, I don’t know. Nor do I intend to stay and find it out." Crow continued his story, a story which was true from Sheva’s side, but something entirely else in Henry’s mind.

’Does he mean that they will deal with him after that test is over?’ If they were really asking Crow to stay here, why was he wearing those clothes? Why would he hide an armor under his shirt? Why the big bag that seemed to contain weapons?

And why did that woman seem to be against him from staying here?

He has come here before, so why is it dangerous now?

"Where are you going?" At such a question, Crow didn’t speak much. On the side, Henry even saw Sheva appear, glaring at them and specifically at Crow. Her eyes were enough to tell that she didn’t wish for Crow to expose where he was going.

"I know I have no right to be here and what I am doing is foolish. But Miss, please, at least let me know where you are going?... He fell into this whole charade due to me, if not for me, he wouldn’t have fought against his own people that day."

At the mention of such words, the eyes of Sheva turned a bit weird.

What did he mean by this?

’Was there more to the story that I don’t know about?’

"He fought?" She asked with surprise.

"In a way, he saved our life."

"He put his own life at risk... again?" Confusion clouded her mind.

She is aware of Crow’s habit, more than the adventure itself, he wishes to see that adventure from the side.

Even during the battle on the hill, all he had done was look at the tragedy from the side and then turned into fodder for some ritualistic curses as his fingers were sacrificed to open a way forward of the encirclement.

Sheva had appreciated for a long while, but as she understood Crow at a deeper level, she had also understood that he probably did all of that out of his own selfishness. If not for that Jester, he probably wouldn’t have helped them.

Or so she came to conclude after a while.

But her understanding of Crow came into question again.

’If it was him, he would have stayed on the side.’

"Again?" Henry asked, curious over what Sheva meant by again. But she just shook her head, before sighing and explaining. "We plan to follow to the area where the test of that great will take place." it was her that spoke of these words, not Crow.

He just appeared startled at Sheva’s response, asking if she was mad.

"He was not going to leave anyways... guess if he knows of the danger, he might just change his mind." As she said these words, the eyes that stared at Crow had changed for a bit from before.

’It can’t be as simple as just enjoying the action and scenery.’ there was more to it that Crow was hiding from her, something sentimental it seems.

"The test area? The one with Rashid?... it hasn’t been completed yet?" He asked, curious over the fact that there was still no conclusion to that day’s test as of yet.

"How can it be, when none knows what the test even is beside those two, as you said before." Crow talked in a slow tone so that Henry understood. "But considering Miss Sheva is here, they would make a move at the earliest, and hence I need to be ready and follow them in."

"But why? You are not even a participan..." Before he could conclude his words, Henry looked at Sheva and then something lit up in his head. ’Merits... he intends to redeem her freedom through achievements in this test.’

There is nothing better in this world than your targets making up the lies for you and then get lost in that lie.

"I just plan to follow after my boss and look over what all of this hassle is about, nothing more." Crow spoke the truth. But both Henry and Sheva had something else in their mind.

Both of them lost in their thoughts. In their mind it was easy to see that Crow was hiding something, making their desire to go into those ruins stronger. They have to make sure that Crow survives.

In Henry’s case, he wanted his friend to obtain the merit and return to school again.

While for Sheva, after misconstruing a falsehood about Crow in her head, she felt it would be wrong for Crow to die so early.

So although her desire to seek death hadn’t disappeared yet, she intends to ensure Crow’s as well as Henry’s survival through this ordeal.

"I will come with you." Said Henry, starting a new round of discussion, which ended prematurely as there was no time left anymore.

They had to move.
