Chapter 309: 5.11.2 Broken expectations.
The world is never a simple place, some things are better left unsaid, and things that are better left undone.
But that is only when playing the game above the board. Something my kind albeit a bit weird friend Malidi hated to do.
When the great adventuring days of Phuket were close to ending, he had never taken any warnings from Ikaros and rushed into Forbidden zones one after another to compile a set of rules and understand what those places were all about.
All in an effort to feed his own curiosity and hope that others who come after would have a set of rules they can follow to survive if they were to ever stumble in such zones.
The rules of the Ruins of Phuket were compiled as well, including its origin and the dangers it possessed.
"Just four seems a bit too little?" Lugerth, the adept curse wielder of the group, spoke while looking at the massive amount of rules he had just got his hands on. "A higher number would have helped me better." He spoke with some scorn while looking at his two companions and their leader who was none other than Baldar.
"There is no need for multiple people, just focus on me, it should be enough," Baldar spoke while driving toward the outer area of the ruins, his eyes completely void of any emotion so much so, that he didn’t even catch on to the distrust that Lugerth’s voice held in it.
This was of no concern to Baldar to begin with, considering how little control he actually had over team two and there were only a few he could completely control or trust.
As for the reason?
’He is not one of us.’ Baldar had been an outlier who was trained to be someone else but had fallen to their team after failing to complete his objective, which in turn made the others in the team think that I treated them as second class.
Which was funny considering it was in their name. But I guess, they had always treated it as just a mere naming convention. Not to mention, wasn’t it usually them who handled the international subterfuge which was important in ensuring the safety of their country?
Don’t they do more than Team One when it all comes down to it?
So why treat them like this? Why be considered second?
Such feelings had been in their heart since the beginning but few had voiced it out considering their old leader was Karp, a man like them who lived a hard life before being chosen for their country by their leader.
"... If you say so, boss," Lugerth spoke before ignoring Baldar for the rest of the journey.
Although he hated him, his hate was not stronger than the mission itself until it was over. He plans to listen to Baldar.

"You say they will make a move today?"
"I never said such words."
"But you implied, didn’t you?" It was close to evening and if that Knight is not stupid, she should have moved by now. No matter if she had made all the preparations or not.
And the reason was none other than standing in front of me, Sheva who remained calm and seemed to somewhat agree with my own plans after a bit of talking.
She plans to go to the ruins with me. During our talks, although she didn’t say where all of them were going, it was not hard to understand that the Knight will make a move today, it will start today, but how long this whole thing will go for?
I can’t tell, nor can Sheva expect.
"We should move, my boss might be moving soon, if we lose him, we might never learn where this test venue is." I made a suggestion, which made her turn silent for a bit before she nodded.
It was no secret who this boss of mine is, it was someone close to her and had lied to her. And if we were to follow him through all of this, then she would eventually meet him. It’s why she psyched herself up before saying. "But I don’t have my weapon."
"Are you saying, it’s a place where you can use your weapon to begin with? Ah, so not under the sea." I spoke, causing her to be startled, while I smiled wide. "Good, it’s good news for me. No need to follow up on the boat. We can walk."
"You are the same, like on that train that day." She sighed, before recalling the train incident where Crow had saved her from a stalker that had been eyeing her for a while.
Though the answer she got in response. "What train?"
"... You don’t remember?"
"Should I?"
"Hah..." She could only blame this all on his eccentricity. He was a weird boy if one were to think about it. Even the time when she had followed him and the time she had used him as a hostage which had resulted in his father’s death gave her a certain understanding of this boy.
He seeks adventure like a child, but his understanding of adventure is a bit skewed and broken, unlike that of a child.
’He wouldn’t mind my death if it comes to it.’ Considering the nature of this boy, she knows full well what he might do if he were to choose between adventure and saving her life.
’A perfect partner in some sense.’ Making him the perfect partner for her.
"Let’s go." He said, readying himself as he started to pack his bags, but it was then a voice came.
"Are you also leaving?" The little girl, who had been silently listening on the side from the other room, asked in a pained voice. Causing Crow to stop.
While Sheva on the other hand went ahead and said. "Yes, we will be going for a while." She said coming close to picking the little girl in her arms. "But don’t worry, it will only be for a little while, and I might have brought you there, if not for the danger."
She coaxed the child while Crow focused on packing.
Bringing some dried food, some bandages and alcohol, and a couple of potions that had been kept in a safe for a while. "Expired." Among these, half of them expired. ’Shit.’ He thought, looking at Sheva before his eyes turned to the table where a particular vial was kept in hiding. ’Should I?’ He thought, recalling the nature of the potion and how useful it might be during this adventure.
He ended up putting it in his bag as well. It’s always good to be prepared.
"Miss, you should go down and meet Master Max for one last time." he made a suggestion before picking up the bag and then saying. "I will go meet with the maid and the bodyguard of mine And ask them to take care of the girl and Master for me."
After seeing that Sheva had listened to him, he walked out of the house, readying to move next door and meet his lazy maid who had left him alone for the whole day.
Though, the moment he opened his door, he found that someone else was already standing in front of it. Someone he was very familiar with.
"You, you really are going?" He asked, confused for a bit, before this thought was solidified as he saw a thin armor hidden under Crow’s jacket and the bag that was big enough to carry a weapon. "And it’s not a simple change in directives, is it?"
It was easy to see that Crow was going on a dangerous mission. Before finding this whole thing a bit absurd, considering how bad he was at fighting.
Did he lie about his fighting too? Henry had such a thought for a bit, before shaking his head. Among all the people he knows, Crow had been the only one confident enough to speak of many of his secrets which included one that would make him the enemy of a whole country.
And if can expose such a secret of his, then it doesn’t make sense to lie about his fighting powers.
So it was something else.
"You.. you shouldn’t be here," Crow said with some embarrassment.
"I feel like I am at the right time, otherwise, who knows if I would be able to meet you again."
"You know I can’t live a normal life anymore, not after what happened, last night should be our last meeting."
As the bickering continued, it attracted the ears of Sheva, who was not too far from the door to begin with.
So although she had chosen to remain hidden for a while. As the topic went in deeper and she felt some panic in Crow’s voice, she chose to come out and look at this young man.
"You told him about your origins?" She asked, curious and a bit furious over this act.
It was stupid to put a civilian’s life at risk by telling him dangerous information. But Crow shook his head. "This was not my intention, its a long story, but I needed to tell him all of that to help him go back to his normal life."
At such words, Sheva’s expression turned even weirder. This was not the Crow she was aware of. He felt somewhat different, panicked even.
It was the first time she had seen a hint of emotion on his face. The emotion that felt genuine.
"He was an oddball." She had known this for a long time, but this was the first time, her expectations of him were broken.
