Chapter 306: 5.10.3 A wonderful life.
Time stops for no one.
The once strong man who was able to run wantonly in the capital of Pulgasari was no more than a husk of who he used to be. Barely alive or capable of even speech, he stayed there like a corpse in front of Sheva.
"He used to cry so much in the morning?" A voice came from her back, startling her. "You are awake?" She said, looking at Crow.
Who in turn said. "You don’t have to be so guarded, it doesn’t seem that my Boss holds any interest in either of us.... More appropriate to say, he wishes to keep us both away from the mess." Crow said, looking at the little girl not too far from her. "He even faked the destruction of your old orphanage as an excuse to lure you out... away from them."
"? You... what do you mean faked its destruction."
"I mean, he faked it to lure you out from that Knight’s Grasp. Because even a fool can see he still loves you."
"??" Sheva couldn’t believe what she was hearing at this point. For one, she was surprised that Crow knew so much while on the other, she was surprised by what his words entailed. "What.. who is your boss?" She asked closing in on Crow.
But he just put a finger on his lips and said. "Shuu, people are sleeping at the moment. Why don’t we go into the other room and talk? Because I see, you have a lot of questions at the moment."
At such words, Sheva could only give Max one look, before nodding and following Crow to the kitchen which was awfully dark for some reason. Making her put up her guard. But then, after the window shutter was upped by Crow, it was all bright and sunny.
"Explain who your boss is, Crow."
"Why so weird about it, don’t you know about Baldar? That bastard? He seems to hate my guts for some reason. But guess, he still has to listen to Big boss."
"No.. he died, Captain told me he died in front of her."
"I don’t know who this captain of yours is, but they are probably wrong considering I met my boss just a while ago. And he was very much alive."
Lies, she had been fed lies again by none other than Jara.
No, this whole thing might be a lie as well, a game to make her speak her mind over where they have to go. But for some reason, she knew it was not a lie.
"Guess, it’s too much to digest for you. How about some tea?" Giving time to think for oneself is always good and Crow just intended to do that. "Phuket might be small, but we still get fresh shipments of Thar Mountain Tea leaves. I wonder if you have tried them." The devil-may-care attitude shown by Crow felt almost nostalgic to Sheva. But she was not in the state to think of the past.
And while Crow cooked, Sheva was finally able to open her mouth after much contemplation. "Since how long were you aware that I worked for Jester?"
"If you are wondering if Jester told me a thing? Then you are wrong, all I did was watch you guys from the side, not like I intended to do that."
"I bet, even the Master is aware of this, but he never spoke of it. So I did as he did and never poked around too much when you were meeting him. But blame the superhuman ears, you just hear some stuff even though you don’t want to."
There were errors, mistakes that anyone with a calm mind have noticed in Crow’s words, but Sheva was far from calm or able to think straight. She didn’t even know how she ended up here and what she wished to do anymore.
Because to her, at this point. None of that mattered. A peaceful life filled with riches was out of her hands. She can’t live the way she wants no matter how much she struggles.
And no matter how much time goes by, she will still be surrounded by lies no matter what happens. "What do I do then? How.. hah!... He is a coward, you know. A coward that can’t face me and say what he wants."
"Why the need to face him? From the looks of it, he wishes to keep us both away from whatever is going to happen. Isn’t his meaning pretty easy to understand?" Crow said while serving the tea, but Sheva appeared a bit apprehensive while looking at it, before thinking. ’Fuck it.’ and just sipping it up.
’It doesn’t matter.’ She thought.
"It is, that’s why it’s so frustrating. That coward keeps doing this... how much did he pay this time?"
"??" Crow tilted his head in confusion as he wondered what Sheva was speaking about. "It’s obvious he went against orders in order to protect me. And from what I understand of his boss, he probably lost something in return again... I wonder what it is."
"??... doesn’t it mean that I am also in trouble? I am also being protected in a certain case." Crow wondered for a bit, before his fears were put down by Sheva who said. "They saved you, leaving me to fall into the Radiant Knight’s hand. I believe both of our importance in the eyes of this country differs."
"?? Good point. But why am I special?" Crow wondered, before thinking of Max. "For the bloodline I carry?"
"Guess so, Max was chosen for all of this for a reason. And now that reason resides in you."
"Don’t scare me so much, lady," Crow said with a pained laugh.
A laugh that made Sheva almost envious of him.
"Well whatever the case is, I think this is an opportunity for you to get out of this whole drama and live a normal life. I bet my boss would help you get a clean record and you can live normally after this all is over." Crow suggested, but Sheva only shook her head.
"Think before responding Miss, although the kids are not actually dead, but it doesn’t mean their orphanage didn’t burn down. They need a place to stay and people to take care of them. Be their protector in this case? The caregiver?"
"Crow... what else has Jara said to you?" Sheva was no fool, she could see clearly that Crow’s words were too close to her own dream. Things that she had only spoken to Jara about. So how did he know of it? How could he be so correct?
The answer was simple. All of these suggestions were made by Jara, his way to give her a normal life.
"Wha...what do you mean miss?" Crow said with some embarrassment. "I was just giving a suggestion after hearing the story of that little girl."
"Just end it Crow... I understand our position. He wants me to sit this one out and then go back to society, is it?"
"Well, that’s the jist of it. A good chance, if I have to say so for people like you."
Sheva wanted to ask what Crow meant by people like her, but she didn’t bother questioning it by the end.
All that remained was. "And I thought you were going to ask me what the mission is." Sheva said, a bit surprised over all of this. She had expected the questions to reach this subject one time or another, but it never happened.
And from the confusion of Crow, she can see that he was completely ignorant of the subject.
Or so she had thought. "If you are wondering about the mission. No need, we can just follow that Knight when the time comes, so there is really no need to question." It really was no issue, beside the fact that they will lack preparedness to whatever this test was and hence might face higher losses if they plan to tackle it.
"With that Knight in the lead, then my boss and his men..." But this was of no concern to Crow. He proudly spoke of his own plan. "... I will enter wherever they plan to go, I am not missing out in this fun, no matter what happens."
A stupid plan, a really stupid plan. And Sheva ended up calling it out, in an attempt to dissuade Crow. But he just fought back. "Why do you call it stupid. Most of the obstacles will be dealt by that Knight and Boss, so I could follow them unharmed."
"..."
"Of course the issue is if its in the sea, I can’t afford a motorboat if its too far, or swim for that matter."
"..."
"You are a funny guy Crow. But I know, you are not joking." This made Sheva a bit sad. Although Crow was far from a fool, his IQ turned one digit when it came to pursuing adventure in his eyes. "Don’t you remember what happened when you followed your Master up that hill in Bothal?" She said pointing toward his hand, his finger which still were of different color than his own skin. "This time, you might lose more than just your fingers. Will it really be worth it?"
This was a simple question that might have made many wonder if their choices were correct to begin with. If they were rational, they might have even abandoned such a dangerous endeavor and chosen to wait and see until all was over.
But that is only for sensible people, which Crow was not. "Worth it... better have fun than die out of boredom."
"Living a life filled with fear is not living at all."
