Chapter 292: 5.06.3 Don’t bite my Behind.
It was easy to see how much Remira wished to say to me, how much hatred she held for me in her heart, and how much she didn’t wish to be here.
As in a way, even without our shared past, we would still be enemies due to the camp we belonged to. But such personal vendetta had no place in this room with something godly sitting above us.
Only a fool out dared to bring in their personal grievances here, and although Remira was a fool, she was not the fool of such ilk.
And the only reason she was here was probably something similar to me. She must have been called here either for her past actions, or she caught the interest of Blue Rose while snooping around the area when the battle took place.
There can be some other reason, but none of them would be something along the lines of Remira being there willfully. Making her somewhat similar to me.
She must be as confused as I was when the Daemon of Incarnation gave us an offer. She thinks I need something from her, but I truly don’t. Even coming here was a mistake in my eyes.
But Blue Rose obviously didn’t think so. "Of course you do, Jester. You need me to pardon you of your slights from before. You don’t think I would overlook something like that, did you?"
’Ah.’ With age comes serenity. A clear and focused mind during dangerous situations would always put you on edge against your enemies, and that has been my advantage till now. The same advantage an old being like Blue Rose held.
There was no hint of anger on her face while she said. "The same is the case with you, Remira Wyrmwood. Although I won’t be able to harm you, it isn’t hard for me to do the same with the people that were with you, no matter how far they are currently."
A clear threat to us.
But in Rashid and Henry’s case, they never really offended Blue Rose and they were also the ones who came here out of their free will. Making them the only ones who had the chance to gain something from this little opportunity.
"I apologize for my prior offenses. Please do tell, me what your request is?"
Blue Rose looked at me, then at Remira. "I believe she and the Boy from Vybain family should already know the answer to it, you should ask them."
They should know the answer?
Did she tell them before my arrival? Seems to be the only plausible scenario. So what was it?
In case of Remira, she had maintained her Poker face, neither moving, nor showing much response to the Daemon’s words, but the boy on the other hand suddenly turned fearful, while holding his head in pain.
"Maltorin was it? Speak of the mission and I will allow you safe passage out from Yethel." I gave a great offer. The greatest I could ever give to him considering how all of his companions were virtually dead, and the Cynark couldn’t do a thing for he was carrying a false identity and can be charged with nation level espionage and terrorism considering how his companions fought in the streets, putting the lives of the kind people of my country at risk.
But before the boy could consider my offer, Blue Rose spoke in a kind tone. "What are you waiting here for? Shuu... it’s time for my breakfast." Then while snapping her fingers, she ordered the mortal looking Kairut. "Professor, kick them out, I have given them enough of my time already." That playful tone, playing the role of some noble woman. Those with long life really turn worse for wear. Even the ones of her nature.
"Hope we meet again." I gave her a salute, slowly walking out of the house, along with my contestants in a mission I was not privy to.
And then, the moment I took my steps out of the home of Kairut, with a slash, my legs came off.
’Hah, so predictable.’
"Oh Remira, I had forgotten you were behind me... you really surprised me this time." I spoke in a playful tone, but she was not in such a mood at the moment.
"What do you intend to do with him?" She asked as if I were meant to know who she was speaking of.
"Him?.. Who are you talking about, Oh Great Knight?"
Although I asked such a question, it doesn’t seem Remira was in the mood to call out his name. Instead, all she did was crush my hand with her feet, or she intended to do, but Rashid, now Maltorin, came and shouted. "Stop."
He couldn’t watch the corpse of his servant being desecrated, it doesn’t matter if the one doing such a heinous act was a Master level Radiant Knight or not.
"Boy, do you even understand what this thing is?" Remira, although appearing cruel, did stop her actions. She can see the pain and anger in the eyes of Rashid. A somewhat relatable feeling she had experienced too many times.
"Oh Knight, its rude of you to call me a thin..." Before I could speak, she kicked me in the mouth, stopping my words, before she looked at the boy and continued her words. "This thing is a wraith controlling the body of your companion. Let me deal with him, and I promise to not bring any more harm to your companions."
"Boy, my deal is still valid. Tell me what it is that the excellency wants and I will give you a safe passage out."
*****
Who to trust?
The answer to it was simple in Henry’s eyes, of course it was the corpse that was incapable of even moving. Who else?
But the same was not true for Rashid. Although ignorant of the words and its struggle due to his clean upbringing, what he didn’t lack was perspective and ability to pick and choose the kind of information he wishes to hear. Making his thoughts much more diverse than people his age.
He was not driven by propaganda like Henry who grew up hearing the struggles of his parents and how bad it was before. Rashid was free from all such thoughts and hence can see Remira’s perspective clearly.
’He is the one who is responsible for everyone’s death.’ If what Jester introduced himself as was true, and his moniker of Rat King. Rashid knew that he could never trust him.
Not to mention he had been warned in the past with the letter to beware of the rat. And there was no other rat than him, the man that might be the cause of his tragedy.
Then again, the responsibility son his shoulder was too much, he had to survive this ordeal no matter what, and in rare chance he can get what he wants, then even better.
Though it just so happens that his own life was at risk, he can’t depend on anyone anymore and there was little to no chance he would be able to escape from this place even if he were to achieve his goal.
What to do?
It was at this point, Remira seeing the confused and struggling look of Rashid, did she suddenly make a choice. "Maltorin, he is a liar, he won’t ever fulfill any of his promises." She told some lies.
"Think carefully boy, you won’t be harmed by her, unlike the two of us. You can fail, but not us. The only one among our group that can not bother himself with this mission." Then I spoke some truth that was hidden right under everyone’s eyes.
And Remira let me speak such words that would end up pitting her if not handled well. The boy can just accept my offer at this point and leave this accursed place unharmed.
As for the mission, obviously it was dangerous, otherwise why would the boy show such a fearful look as before, which also played to my advantage. This could be the only opportunity I can have.
’I have an edge.’ And I was sure of it, this whole game was in my pocket. And Remira can’t think about it.
"I..." He tried to speak and I got on the edge of my seat.
On the other hand, the young boy called Henry was silently standing beside his friend, waiting for him to speak.
But it was not Rashid that spoke, instead Remira, who was making up her own plans. "I will support you in winning this mission, how about it?" At such sudden words, I turned to look at Remira as if I was looking at a weirdo.
"So heartless." I spoke, feeling it was unbelievable for her to sacrifice her companions so easily.
Doesn’t this mean she gave up on her companions?
"What?" Rashid, who had been unable to form proper words till now, was as surprised as I was.
"I give up this mission and support you against him, isn’t it a good offer?"
Ah, my words came to bite me back.
