Chapter 286: 5.05.1 Teamwork
Unlike me, my master was born poor. He told me the story of his childhood, how malnutrition caused his growth to be stunted for a human, making him appear smaller and weaker than normal. Which in turn affected his potential and caused him to grow stronger at a slower rate.
It can be seen how he only achieved master rank so late in his life, even though his bloodline was extra special.
Weakness that I was not affected by in the least. ’The heart... it hurts.’ There were some gear-like sounds coming out of my body as it twisted and turned, growing in size before adopting the look of a minotaur.
A false one considering I did a partial transformation, but this gave me the edge I needed here.
Not to mention, it was a great cover, due to how weird it appeared, it would probably fool others into thinking that my bloodline belonged to some cow totem.
"Moo~" Like a beast, I roared as the pain of my skin splitting apart while the horns grew was too much for me.
I regret it. A different animal’s skin would have been better than a cow’s.
"Crow... this?... You alright?’ Henry asked me while taking his time off the battle, and I just nodded, letting him know that I was still in control.
Not like this beast can lose control anyway. It was just a mimicry, not real bloodline transformation that was available to higher-level Knights who preferred the method of blood concentration instead of the inner energy that other knights used.
After confirming that I was still in control Henry rushed to support Rashid, who was more of a paper cannon, capable of great harm through his electro-magnetic abilities, but none of them mattered when the opponent used a single staff to deflect his attack, and when in close-ranged, the electricity was instead diverted directly into the ground.
Earthing was it called? Making the woman a tough opponent, but it would seem that the combo of Henry and Rashid did put her at bay, and with my addiction, it became one-sided.
"Bang." Or so I thought. Unlike my transformation, like before, I got struck on my puffed-up chest once again. Breaking the little clothes that were still left on my body, making me heave heavy breath as bits and pieces of blood came out of my cough.
’Too much.’
I overlooked one fact that our opponent was not simple, even with my transformation, I was still new to this thing called fighting. Although I had seen so many battles with my eyes, I don’t think I would be good at things other than sneak attacks.
"Fuc..." The strike was so hard that I almost broke my character.
This woman was good. Much better than others I have seen, but this was not the time to cry over pain.
The woman suddenly changed her target and rushed toward me, treating me as the weak link. ’Lady, I am on the same side.’ I wanted to shout, but she didn’t seem to be in that mood. But before she could strike me, Rashid’s bullet came and stopped her in the tracks while Henry, who was showing himself to be a better fighter than even Rashid, came and tried to sneak attack her from behind, but she easily threw him off and then tried to rush toward me again.
"Either leave or fight... don’t be a burden to us." It was Rashid who said such words. And I know he was right.
No matter how he treated me before, from his prior action of protecting me, it would seem he had temporarily accepted my help. And wished for me to help him during this predicament.
And that is probably what he thinks, he never thought I would run away from here, it’s the kind of character I had built till now.
However, the thing that probably brought down his suspicion of me was my inexperience while fighting. As I had frozen in the battle the moment the staff of the woman struck toward me, almost in fear as my mind had gone black, unable to comprehend what move to make.
Inexperience is what led to this, and I got hit by her staff.
"... I will... fi.. Fight." A voice heavier than before left my mouth, with some lisp in the end as it was harder to control my tongue properly. Words that were hard for normal people to understand if we were in any other situation, but as if machines, the two seem to have understood what I meant here.
"Beautiful friendship." The woman mocked us. For we were in no state to fight at all.
Henry was the only one with the least injury, then Rashid whose fingers in the right hand were a bit crooked, and he limped while walking.
Then there was me, the guy who got struck in the chest. ’Her bloodline shouldn’t be anything special. The only thing she had shown till now is her inhuman reaction speed and monstrous strength, the rest is pretty average for an Adept Knight. The only edge she has at the moment is her exceeding our combined experience during battles.
Thick fingers that were too clumsy to hold a sword. Legs are too stunted to make diverse directional movements on the go.
Leaving me with two things, my heavy body, which obviously held no problem for this woman, and then my horns.
Horns, aim straight, sneak attack, fast reaction, she might catch me.
Instead of thinking too hard, I tried to fight. But instead of rushing in straight, I tried to learn patterns, movements, and the dance patterns of her staff. And she was dancing in my eyes, a beautiful dance made for entertainment.
And as the seconds turned to minutes and my breathing became unstable out of tiredness, I knew it, I was not good at fighting.
If not for me being passive most of the time and focusing on defense, I would have been killed by this woman.
’This is... fun.’ And although this taught me how bad I was at battle, it didn’t mean I learned nothing from it.
’I can do it.’
I was bad at battle, but not thinking. If I were to watch it as an audience, I would view this battle as a third party. I was able to notice many things as well as mistakes that can be rectified.
Which included some bizarre moves by this woman where she obviously had the chance of killing us. But she chose to hold back and mock us during those down times. Letting us a moment of reprieve to collect our breath.
’She is having fun.’ It was not too bizarre if one were to think about it. We both belonged to the same organization and hence probably held similar desires. Which was to seek some action, some drama, some romance.
’Such a great actor.’ But enough is enough, it was time for this act to come to an end.
I have learned her patterns, her weaknesses which were out of consideration for us newbies as well as genuine ones that she would make even during her fight to death someone much stronger than us.
’She is closer to a sentinel, unmoving and able to turn almost instantly. As long as she remains in a place, she can become an insurmountable wall.’
She needs to move, it’s why Henry was able to sneak attack her before while she aimed for me. When her feet are moving, her area of control goes down.
’What sort of martial arts is this?... I should ask the boss for some details.’ Adding some ideas for my future growth. I did something absurd.
"*Kheo.. *Thuk." Instead of attacking her in any way, I just spit at her face.
Which actually ended up falling on her face. "...?" Confused for a bit, she turned to look at me after pushing Henry away. Anger is visible on her face.
"..."
"..."
It would seem my actions surprised everyone, including my own friends. But I didn’t say anything. As this has confirmed my suspicion. But if I were to shout it out to my companions, the woman would understand why I did it and become guarded against my tricks.
So I can’t say anything obvious. "That belongs on your face..." Like a suicidal kid, I mocked her, while attempting to repeat my previous offense again.
Of course, how could she accept this?
Instead, she once again focused her attention completely on me. "You shouldn’t have done that..." Bloodlust, now this was something I was familiar with, and what this battle lacked.
"We are dead anyway, so why not bring you down with us as well." My words were barely recognizable to the ears of the woman or others around me anyway. But the intention behind my words was completely conveyed to her, making her anger soar as I tried spitting at her again, which she dodged instead of using her bloodied staff to deflect.
’As I had expected... sadly, I can’t take advantage of this aspect of her weakness... but there is another one.’
She rushed toward me, and I did the same with my horns.
Of course, it was dangerous to hand her my head on a silver platter, but after seeing her use that staff so many times, and predicting how her killing blow will be, I timed it perfectly, while my hands made particular emotions towards my friends.
Left for Henry which pointed toward her feet and the other toward Rashid, which pointed toward her chest.
It was time for this woman to learn what teamwork actually is like.
