Chapter 283: 5.04.2 I can’t go.

With the master in his sleep mumbling something under his breath, I left my home at the earliest that was possible. And although I intended to give a slip to the woman who kept a watch over me, I knew that she would barely try to interact with me besides the regular warnings and nothing more.

She will not protect me, nor would she stop any of my willful actions as they were not in her job requirement.

So ignoring that someone was keeping an eye on me, I made some preparations after considering all the scenarios I could in my limited time, before leaving my house and rushing toward the place where the event might take place.

Which was none other than my Professor Kaarath’s house.

Then again, I didn’t even know where he lived, which made it a bit troublesome. So what should I do?

A bit of reasoning was needed here. He lived alone from what I recall and even ate at the School cafeteria like the rest of the students, meaning he wouldn’t live too far away.

A fact strengthened by the fact that he is always available on call, I can recall many stories when he had ruined free periods by taking over classes when it was requested of him. Making him much hated among the students, and loved among the faculty that didn’t wish to deal with rabid kids.

’At least on school grounds, or close to it.’

That was to my expectation and I got to the school area as fast as I could.

If something were to happen, I would be able to hear it, and then following up on it like usual won’t be hard.

Though, the night seemed awfully silent today. It was merely 10 at night and the energy of town had disappeared. The reason for it was also simple, as it didn’t take long for me to notice the presence of some police officers on the major roads, forcing people to close shops and pushing the drunkards off the streets.

"Officer, what happened?" One of the shopkeepers asked a question I had been curious about since the start. "Spies... There are a bunch of them in the city at the moment, there will be a clean sweep of the city by the military around morning. So it’s better if you bring your wares to your home." The insinuation here was simple, there was a habit of taking some of the wares or products in the name of security, or even outright tax.

Which in truth was nothing more than simple corruption on the military front, but the citizens here were used to it. The military were the ones protecting from the monster that was the Cynark kingdom, so in a way, the Military deserved all these simple threats.

And I deserved it as well, considering how much I have sacrificed for this country, but I will never stoop to their level, nor will I ever do it in the future.

’What is going on though... why such a sudden change?’ If I recall, Sheva and her captor seemed to have left the city, and to my knowledge, there were none as dangerous as her. Unless one talks about the woman I saw around the evening as well as Rashid who wished to converse with her.

’That can’t be the reason, can it?’ I had wondered while going toward my campus. But what I got in return was a small fight, breaking out not too far from my college. And then right in front of me were two figures sneaking into the campus.

Both of whom didn’t seem to notice me?

Odd, but considering how I wanted to be part of such a fun activity, I shouted to them. "What are you doing here?"

Rashid’s electrifying fingers aimed at the sound upon which a small coin danced floating in the air. Before he came to a pause and looked surprised. "Crow?" He asked and I nodded with some fear.

I might have messed up, Rashid seemed jumpy at the moment and didn’t bother hiding the secret that he had kept to himself for months on end. That finger and those electric currents held so much power that even my blood started to boil. It was dangerous, too dangerous in my eyes.

As it is said, generally a totem-level creature’s bloodline only shows its true strength once one reaches Master level. While for those with special bloodlines of even higher beings, can attain supernatural powers much earlier, specifically the adept level, and in rare cases like me, in the apprentice level.

"Rashid, what are you doing?" Henry, who was on the side, rushed and tried to drag Rashid’s arm down so that he wouldn’t harm me. But his actions were futile, Rashid’s hand didn’t even budge, while he warned me. "Just get out of here Crow, this is not a place for you." As he said those words, the coin, like a bullet scraped past me, striking the pavement, creating a clean hole in its wake. "And I am not joking."

’I messed up.’ I knew this well, I got here a bit late and the act I intended to put in front of these two might not work anymore. A simple act where I would act as a horny teen like them, before getting dragged into Rashid’s simple game.

"I... I received a message from Henry to be here... Why are you shooting me?" And when things don’t go one’s way, then you create chaos through lies. "Tel..tell him Henry." I didn’t ask any questions about the situation, why I was called here, or what was going on. I just dragged out a letter, a prior preparation I made, and then showed it to the two people.

As if it was my proof that I was called here by someone.

A letter that none of the two can actually see in this darkness, but it gave some validity to my words, not to mention, that my prior weak and scared persona added to some of my lies as well.

"Henry, did you call him here?"

"I didn’t even know you would bring me here."

"..."

"Henry don’t lie... There was this young woman that came to give me this letter. See, even the writing matches."

In my words, Rashid didn’t know what he could do, the more time wasted away, the more sacrifices his men would have to make for him. Which he doesn’t wish to see. But for whoever dragged Crow here, Rashid was not so cold-hearted to harm an innocent kid.

Or so I had thought.

*Bang

"FUCK!" I cried in pain, as I dropped to the floor in pain. "YOu.. You shot me??" I cried again, never expecting this to happen, and Henry also started to shout at Rashid.

But Rashid was in no such mood. "You don’t understand it now, but you will in the future." With those words, He dragged Henry away, who intended to rush to me and help.

"This incorrigible bastard... he won’t let me watch." This kid, is ruining the fun for me."Hello Lady, they are gone, can you come and pick me up, I might just bleed to death." I shouted in the air and a figure did appear.

A woman, middle-aged, appearing like the vegetable seller aunty that you see every day, there was nothing special about her, besides that she was good at shadowing people. And this aunty currently held scorn in her eyes for me. "Can you please deal with this injury?"

"I would suggest you go back. This is no place for a child like you."

"Lady, I am far from a child, I am even of legal age according to dwarven rules." I spoke in a kind way, without any squirm on my face. It was as if the pain didn’t even exist at the moment. "Help me this time, and I promise to lend you a hand in your time of need as well."

At my words, the woman fell into some deep thoughts, before nodding. "Whatever happens after this is all on you." She chose to help me. Not like she would be punished for my actions to begin with, instead, there was much to be gained in this simple transaction.

"Then a bit heals?" I asked and then she took out a simple potion and dropped it over my kneecaps, where the injury was. "The healing would only be superficial at the moment, the muscles and bones need time to harden."

"Yeah, yeah, I have taken it before. So I know." At those words, I showed her my palm. There was a time I was fingerless as well.

"Then good."

Something was going on in the city and Remira just can’t put a finger on what the reason for all of this was.

Were they exposed? There was a high chance that they were, considering she went out a few days ago to follow Crow and found some important spots that might come handy in future.

"It’s the best time to leave, or we might not be able to in the morning." Sheva made a suggestion and Remira really started to consider it as well.

Although she hadn’t told about it to Sheva, Remira stayed in this city for a purpose. A reason that she hadn’t spoken to anyone about and only few people in the Radiant Hall were in the know.

’High chance I would be exposed during a clean sweep.’ Remirar thought for a bit, before making her mind. ’No, I have a promise to keep and I can’t let him be under that clown for any longer, as the more time goes, the worse his mind might become... I can’t let that clown have his way with him.’
