Chapter 260: 4.10.4 Red is here.

What to choose and what not to choose, Jara was well aware that I was listening in and he also knew that the choice that Remira gave him was impossible in some sense.

For one, he can’t let himself be captured, the contract has made sure that he would never do such a thing. A constraint that is not on other members from Team One, but Baldar or I should say Jara was a special exception. After his mess up during his training years, I couldn’t trust him with power and authority completely.

I can’t trust him to make choices based on rationale alone. A weakness of an emotional man is that you can’t trust them when something important to them was on the line.

On the other hand, Max and Sheva were well-known figures in Bothal and their likeness had reached the eyes of many powerful people who were interested in the people that were the cause of their current misery.

Because if not for those two, their Guardian wouldn’t have woken up and in return, they would not have suffered due to them. But this was also a great opportunity for them, as long as they captured the two, it would be something akin to true freedom and they might just get rewarded by that great figure.

Even words alone would act as accolades for them.

So they would be ravenous over the two. A fact that Remira is unaware of.

She lacks an understanding of who the two of them are or the problems they have caused, no matter how good the relations between the Radiant Hall and Pulgasari are. They still knew to respect each other’s boundaries.

It’s impossible, virtually impossible for Remira to save the two.

"Can you save her?"

’...’

Again with this broken man, making a foolish choice like before. In times when Sheva was not of concern, he would act as a prime employee, doing everything efficiently and even acting as a mind behind team two, which had a not-so-mentally sound captain in the form of Carp.

But this?

This was absurd, you can see the foolishness wafting off his body. His mind was much in desperation, while his eyes were bleeding under the effects of the contract.

It started to work.

"You." Remira saw this and understood, that this man was not lying, not at the very least. He genuinely cared for that woman and it shows due to the contract which was starting to eat away at his life. "I can. But the more you delay, the harder it will be for me to catch up."

"Then go and save her, I believe I know the reason why you... you... you made such an offer." His head hurt, and his heart was on the cusp of bursting. And if nothing is done in time, then he will truly face an end.

An end from which he can never recover like before. This injury was more than just physical.

"... But I... I hope... she never enters... this world again." Remira didn’t know what to say at this point. She can see the state of this man, how he was close to dying.

Earlier, she had assumed that he would struggle, make excuses, and waste her time. All in an effort to make it easier for the woman to run away with the two injured. People that she had assumed should be important to Jester’s plan. But this turned out to be a bit unexpected.

’Trust or not?’ She wondered. The words of her opponent might as well be lies, an act fabricated to fool her into pursuing a dangerous target. But it didn’t make much sense.

Countless scenarios popped up in her head, but none of them seemed plausible in the end. This was too weird and too direct. Which in a way caused her mind to short-circuit.

Of course, the first one to fall from such mental anguish was none other than Jara. "Go to her... save her... and tell her... tell her that I hate her." The eyes were enough to tell the whole story. Remira understood what this man wanted. And she can see why as well.

"I will try my best," Remira spoke as Jara’s body caught fire, causing his gratitude to come out as a wisp of air, as his throat was burned.

Remira didn’t stay there for long, she just picked up her body and rushed in the direction where Sheva had disappeared.

And as it’s only been a minute or two, she was not too far.

Nor could she have moved that far to begin with, as when Remira found her, she was sleeping on the forest ground, while there was no sign of the two she carried on her back.

’What happened?’ She wondered, before keeping some distance away from Sheva.

She can smell it. That familiar smell in the air.,

’That Exorcist?’ she wondered, checking for Talismans all around and striking wildly in the air, all in hopes of dealing with any illusions that might surround her.

But there was nothing here besides the sleeping Sheva.

"What is going on?" She wondered, before going forward and shook Sheva awake.

Being a mage, Red reached the scene the fastest by flying directly to the village.

He was still an officer working in CBI, in the same post and same salary.

The only change was that he had started to work alone now, Blue was found out to be working with the company, a surprise for him, but things started to make sense when he started to mix and match some clues from the past and he understood that he had been played like a fiddle.

A great shame for him, but not much greater than the shame of his own father being involved with the company, whose life he had to save by sacrificing the little respect and promotion he had gained after the recent controversy.

But it was better than being called a fool who caused his own father to die. No matter how just he was in his actions, it doesn’t change the fact that he was the one who turned in his father, who would have surely died for his offenses.

All of which when combined placed a lot of responsibility on him. He has too much to prove and too much to learn.

He wanted to make up for his father’s mistake in his own way.

"Forest fire?" He looked over the distant horizon, which was lit in an orange glow.

There were fires, a big one at that.

’There was no such mention before.’

Whether it was for him to leave Bothal as early as possible, or there was a problem with information. He was already here.

So he flew and saw the scene of the villagers huddled around a small village school, it was far from the village and there was a boundary, making it the easiest place to defend. Not to mention, it was impossible for the forest fire to ever reach here.

"Anyone missing?" From the sky, Red dropped and asked in a cold voice, while he flashed his badge, which showed he worked for the government.

And although his arrival alarmed most of the villagers and scared some enough that they picked up their weapons, the village chief, who was more learned of the world was able to understand from the badge that this was someone from the government.

"I wonder if sir can tell us who you are?"

Red looked toward the old man and nodded. "I go by Officer Red from the Crime Branch and I know this might make me seem untrustworthy, but I can’t say my name, for my own and my family’s safety."

"We understand." The village chief asked this question not for himself, but for the other ignorant ones that looked up to him for direction. But the answer that Red gave also made him wonder if this flying dwarf was someone to be trusted.

But he was a calm person by nature and he knew that for a dwarf that is capable of flight, it won’t take much for him to kill them all. So his man can be considered good, at least for now.

Hence, after the people had calmed down, the chief spoke. "There are two missing, our Mechanic and his apprentice."

"Name and any way to identify them?"

The name... well, they came here recently so I can’t say for certain. If I had my register, I would have told you the name." the chief struggled, before relenting to tell Red about the apprentice. "I might not remember the name of the Mechanic, but I do know of his apprentice, for he was a big nuisance and went by the name Crow."

Going in blind in a dangerous area was always a fool’s errand, and Red was no fool. After the last experience where his soul and body were polluted with forbidden power, he had become conscious of dangers.

Until he makes sure that nothing wrong is afoot and it’s a situation he can handle, only then would he make a move.

’This should be enough.’ And he was ready to leave. From what he learned nothing weird has happened in the city besides the disappearance of the mechanic and his apprentice. Who was suspicious to begin with, considering that they only came to the village at a very specific time.

A time he was awfully familiar with.

’They probably ran from Bothal.’

There was a high chance, the criminals he was looking for were here.

"Sir, before you go... there is something else that the chief might not know about." At those words, Red turned around and asked the man to explain.

"The woman who struck her sword to warn us... she also brought me a twisted human man and asked me to carry him to the shelter with me."

The woman here was obviously Remira, whom Red had ascertained to be a Radiant Knight.
