Chapter 253: 4.09.2 Why is she after me?
Why did he do it?
Too driven by belief? A sense of righteousness?
He could have easily escaped, he was nothing more than a trap specialist who supported Sheva while marking down opponents or sometimes acting as a scout.
The kills in his hands were even lower, he rarely killed someone directly, instead, the opportunity to take life was always in Sheva’s hand who did it covertly, and under his little diversion, she had the chance to escape before the enemies closed in on her position.
That was what they did as a team, he was never a hero, nor a warrior who could handle the soldier on his own.
No, if things had gone on as usual, he would not be babysitting Carp, a madman. Instead, he would be in Team One, along with others of his compatriots, enjoying the days as they do. But it would seem he was not blessed with such a life. He was too emotional, too weak of heart.
The small bonds he made during his little test proved too strong to abandon easily and in his blindness dragged someone he considered his superior with him, a friend at most before there was no way out.
And in those moments, something clicked and he understood what a great mistake he had made.
Yes, that was it. Jara had understood his own emotions and finally understood what drove him to make such a choice.
’Death might have been better if I was alone.’
But he was not alone that day.
His master, meaning I was very regretful of the choice he made that day. For it has ruined his path to greatness. A position that was made for him was taken by Owl, that two-faced friend of mine.
In a way, this also made me regret giving him such a mission. I had known his true nature behind the act he always put up in front of the other orphans. But I had ignored it in hopes that he would eventually come around.
Who would have thought that he would fall so low and instead of doing his mission, he chose to make the worst decision possible?
"Sheva, is this really your choice?" His voice sounded defeated, and his mood seemed down. He had felt the foolishness in Sheva’s voice. It was the same as his own. He somewhat saw himself in Sheva at this point.
As she was pretty much the same in this case.
"Just go Jara, stop with the babysitting and go. I have made my choice and I need to make sure your people keep your promise. Letting Max meet up with his daughter. Unless of course, you can make it happen now?"
At such a question, Jara didn’t know how to respond. He just shook his head. "I have no such authority."
He truly had none. He was a man destined for greatness but abandoned it all due to emotions and foolishness. And I don’t like to say this, but I really detest such wasted potential. He ruined it all for a bunch of soldiers whom he might not meet ever again.
Why did he do it?
Oh, how I wanted to know his reason, what was truly going on in his mind when it happened. The specific chemical makeup of his mind. Sadly, all I can glean is sounds and images, not his emotions or what he thought that day. Any deeper and I might just ruin his mind.
Not in a good way, I might add.
"Then move on if you have no power over the matter, let me be here. I would keep watch over Max and the kid." Sheva’s choices were just. Not too long ago, she had considered death, and if not for Jara’s intrusion into her life again, who knows what else might have happened.
She might not be alive at the moment.
In her eyes, this was the proof that she was on borrowed time and must exist for a purpose and this purpose might not be an orphanage that she dreamed of. But something less meaningful than it, something personal.
’And besides, from the looks of it, the Old Jara is still somewhere in there. He might just do it in my place when I am gone.’
So she pushed him aside and asked him to leave.
But who was Jara?
He was not the old him even if his crazy attitude was mostly an act. He changed after the event, became more selfish, and knew that Sheva was not listening to him. He readied himself.
"Don’t be foolish Jara, this is no time to be sentimental. Remember the contract. What will happen to you as well as her."
’Contract holds no meaning if she can’t live. I am ready to give up everything...’
"This is not a choice of yours to make. As dictated by the contract, the moment you take Sheva’s choice away from her. She would lose her immunity, the very thing you earned after giving your future up."
’... I... I am alive, she can as well survive.’
"So you mean to take her out of one flood and push her into a volcano? How does that make any sense?"
’The volcano has a higher chance of survival.’
"Yes, if you are one of those legendary elemental spirits or some demon." I laughed with a winking face, which Jara could not see. But my intentions were made clear. Unless he can change Sheva’s mind, he won’t be able to save her in any way possible. There was death on all sides. Even on my side.
Hateful thing to know and I understand how much Jara must hate me for my rules. But I can’t change the rules for one person, not even a guy like Jara.
Well not after he gave up his future that is.
As for Sheva?
She was a good character in the play. A great side character that helped our hero during all the important times, a game changer even.
But that was it, this was her limit. There was no way to survive this situation unless she thought rationally. Which seemed harder for her at the moment.
Though it is true that a man is not a machine, one can’t accept them to have consistency throughout their life.
A man grow, learn from mistakes and regrets, they learn to fear the choices they made before and as they grow older, they understand that sometimes, being a cold calculative efficient machine is not a fulfilling way of life.
Sometimes, a hint of foolishness is needed, a hint of drama to make life much more colorful. Wonderful even.
That’s the kind of person Sheva was.
By her morals alone, she had never changed one bit. She had helped and stayed beside Max till the end and even now, she intends to do the same.
The thing that did change was her own understanding of herself.
And I am not going to lie, although, at one point, I did hate her. But not now, not at this moment.
"Why the long face Jara?"
"Nothing, I just thought of how much of a gorilla bitch you were."
"Says the burnt money?" She replied, with a smile and Jara also smiled, though one can see the pain in both of their smiles.
And so with those words, he disappeared. Leaving Sheva with a melancholic look on her face.
"This is better." She knew that staying here would earn her a senseless death.
She was exposed long before on the Metro, while Max was during the battle on the hill. There is no way to run if they were to be exposed. There is no way for them to survive in any way possible.
The only one that can survive is Crow. The reasons must be obvious to everyone involved. Of course, Sheva was not in her right mind to consider it for the moment.
’You better keep your promise.’ She said in her heart, while she kept her own promise of fighting this impossible war with him.
I would miss her.
*****
"This woman." Vegal cursed while watching the closing figure of Remira.
’That little roach couldn’t even hold her for 10 seconds.’
Vegal has seen Carp in action, he knows how annoying he is along with his abilities. As long as he can’t directly deal with his curse, even a Master Rank would find it troublesome to face Crow.
But this woman seemed to have wasted no time and came to him in an instant, which went to show that he was also no match for her.
’What to do?’
’A knight, a Radiant Knight, why would she be here?’ First, it was the intruder from not too long ago, she was weak as paper in front of his strength but held a weird flame that made her invisible.
’Then this knight, who also appeared out of nowhere at such an inopportune time.
Were the two related in any way?
No, there must be some other reason, something I haven’t seen yet.’
It was easy to know who the target of the Knight was. But due to the contract restraints, he can’t name that person nor push the Knight toward him.
Neither could he lead her to their hideout, as even he didn’t know where they were hiding, to begin with.
So something else, there must be something which might attract the Knight’s attraction and leave him alone.
’Yes. That might just work.’ His hands moved causing fire to spray out of a small hole in his sleeves, spreading the fire all over the forest.
