Chapter 248: 4.08.3 The journey.
Remira had run and ran without an end in sight, she moved past the railway tracks, she moved and even reached some villages. But she never found the group.
It would seem they were always on the move, always ahead of her, always aware that she might be close.
Or were they aware of her little trick? Did they have a way to fool the coin? A way to fool the means that she didn’t even understand?
Or is the coin a trap? To fool her into the wrong direction under the behest of her mother to not put her in danger?
No, that was not possible. Her mother was capable of lies, she had seen it firsthand not too long ago and even in her past. But she was not the kind to play such games with her own daughter, no matter how much she worried for her.
Then in her pursuit, she heard something interesting. "A group you say? They came to us for some clothes and food." In one of the villages where the target had left his mark, she finally was able to confirm something.
"Among the many strangers that came here, only they were the ones planning to leave the place."
The many strangers here obviously meant the mercenaries or assassins that were after her or specifically Farhad. They probably had in mind a group of two, a man and a Female knight. They never assumed that another stranger liked them, walking in the open and much to her surprise walking along with his kidnappers.
Forced to or by will? She didn’t know, but from the interaction or what the village chief could recall of that group, he said something that surprised her. "The group planned to go to some country called Fulgari. A dwarf country I think?"
"It’s Pulgasari."
An odd piece of information as no one in their right mind would give away such detail in the open. Why would they even talk about it and leave such an obvious trail?"
As if to confirm her suspicions, she traveled along the villages while she inched closer to the closest train station. And although she might get nothing. But each time there was a group of six, they would always speak of Pulgasari Country. As if it was the message they wished to be important to their pursuer, who can only be one person.
"It lost its heat." A sign that the target was outside of the coin’s detection range, but Remira wasn’t saddened by this. It was to be expected and somewhat unexpected as to how these people walked back to the same path they originally left.
The reason which befuddled her, though the reason why their decision changed had nothing to do with her, nor why Farhad was acting so familiar with these people as she heard from the villagers. But what she can do is reach for a phone and call.
"They are out and about, hold them, kill them if possible, don’t even care for the boy." She sent the message, awakening the many agents of the Radiant church, or specifically the Radiant Eyes, who started their hunt for the boy, for Farhad in their own way.
There was no need to pursue these people, there was no need to take the matter into her own hands, she was part of an organization with massive resources at her beckoning. So she called for help, sending all the Eyes in towns between the two Pulgasari and Cynark into overdrive.
While she boarded up the next train and resumed her pursuit.
A pursuit that lasted for a month at least, with constant screams and fights breaking out often in the middle, though the only thing Remira saw was reports over Farhad’s activity and obsessive journey toward a foreign country.
A country where his sister was meant to be from his words of before.
’A hostage situation?’ She wondered, requesting an audience with the Cynark military as the incidents were becoming too hard to hide.
As on his journey, Farhad had not only felt the pursuit of the Radiant Church but the mercenaries after his head as well.
All of whom were dispatched by him and the group he was part of one after another. From what she could tell from the reports, the state of the victims was turning worse and worse as time went on.
Half-eaten and burned bodies, somewhere even whole bodies disappear.
Another day and another confirmation, the brutality just kept on increasing and no matter what she did, she couldn’t catch up to him, even if she walked ahead of him. A sign that he was a step ahead of her most of the time and the only person he planned to create some distance from.
A tail on me? She wondered. Before shaking her head.
Because of course that was going to be the case, nothing had been normal since she faced that monster, and with his intrusive and annoying ability, he could be looking at her from anywhere he wished.
Or was it someone else? A mole in Radiant Hall?
A blasphemous thought. There can’t be a mole in that holy place. With the way people are recruited in the order, it’s nigh impossible.
"They would rather face multiple mercenaries instead of me?" Remira can confirm this point. Although still unaware of how they had been able to hide from her for so long, it won’t matter in the long run.
They had a destination in their mind, so all she needed to do was instead of trying to ambush them midway, it’s better to do it where they planned to end up. As for hiding from her eyes?
They had forfeited that path the moment they chose to use the locomotive.
"He is trying to escape?"
"From what the Knight informed us, he is going after Officer Fahna Maisel, his older sister."
"This is going to be a problem, if Fahna had arrived here as it was expected of her after the recent mishap, none of the current situation would have come to be."
The government of Cynark did its best to hide the wars in the dark, some even planned to intervene between the mercenaries and drag Farhad back home. But there would always be some push, some corruption from people who didn’t wish to see Farhad own the flames.
So they did their best to maintain his freedom, and in turn made him face constant attacks, which decreased as Farhad’s brutality increased.
But the moment they were close to the port, which was the only way to reach Pulgasari if they didn’t wish to travel through the land route that goes through Yethel. A miracle happened.
"We can’t let him leave. No matter what."
Everyone came to an agreement at once.
"Doing it now when he is so close to leaving? The Duke would not be happy with our response."
"Nothing much could be done, is it? Although I might not know who is involved in the matter besides the mercenaries, it isn’t hard for me to know who it was. But let bygones be bygones, as long as Farhad remains in our great country, I am ready to forget your slight interference."
The office politics finally came to a pause, which was something akin to a death sentence to Farhad’s journey.
Of course, it was too late already.
"The sea is wonderful," Farhad said, overlooking the seaport, before leaving the area and moving toward Yethel.
There was no need to use the seaport, it was a distance from the start, all of the drama, weakness, and brutality done in a way to make others believe in their own intelligence too much. And with Jester’s forces being based around Yethel, it wasn’t that hard for him to enter their country and directly rush toward the border of Pulgasari.
"A step late." The coin heated up, but it was not in the direction of the sea but towards Yethel. ’If not for the coin.’ She sighed, feeling a surge of disappointment at the Intelligence of Radiant Eyes.
They had been fooled, she had been fooled and even the world might have been fooled.
But Remira understood that the moment Cynark learned the direction Farhad had walked, it would probably strain the relations between the two countries once again. A war might even break out.
That was how sensitive the stability of the border was. And in case they learned the people that were attending to Farhad had entered the lands of Pulgasari, who knows what else might happen?
"No matter." The Remira of the past would never have had such deep thoughts before, she would have only focused on hunting Farhad and preventing the plans of Jester from coming into fruition. But she was not the old her.
"There is no need to inform them what path they took." Under the agreement of borrowing their help, Remira still has to give the Cynark military important findings that she comes across, but this time, she just chooses to abandon that promise.
No, it would be more apt to say, she hid some details. "His destination has been confirmed, it’s Pulgasari." A lie to prevent war and misery. Which in truth was just delaying the inevitable. However, the longer peace stays, the better it will be for the real victims of the wars, the innocents caught in the crossfire.
Anyways, what path he was taking was of no consequence in the grand scheme of things.
So she caught the ferry and made her way toward Pulgasari, just like it was fated.
And fate it was that she also entered the very village where the previous figure had walked through not too long ago.
"That night is close."
Remira said, recalling the horrors of Durum and what the Diadic Moon signified then.
’Would such misery be repeated in this place?’ She wondered. ’And if it does, I will be here to stop it.’ She promised.
