Chapter 52: First Day of Class: Mythical Creatures

The door opened wide.

Emilia stepped into the classroom, her presence commanding immediate attention. She ascended the stage with practiced grace, her sharp gaze sweeping over the students. Her eyes lingered for a moment on a boy sitting apart from the crowd, a wolf resting by his side. Then she moved on, raising her hand and tapping the bracelet on her wrist.

"I’ll begin with the attendance. Just tap on your bracelet when the screen appears," she said.

A blue screen flashed in front of each student.

In front of Alex, it displayed:

Rank: 233 – Present

(Tap on the bracelet)

He tapped his bracelet, and the screen updated.

+1 Credit Earned

"Let’s move on now," Emilia continued, her voice calm yet clearly audible across the hall. "As I mentioned yesterday, your credits are important. For the next three months, you’ll earn 1 credit daily for attendance. Other lectures will reward 2 credits per class. Missing any class during this period is strictly forbidden."

She paused, allowing the students to absorb the information.

One student raised his hand nervously.

Emilia said in a neutral tone, "Yes?"

The nervous student stood up and asked stutteringly, "T-T-Teacher, can we buy credit with money?"

Emilia replied sharply, "No, you can’t."

Riven Veylor snickered and students laughed.

Alex remained quiet. Not even Hati reacted to the childishness of the students.

"Now back to the topic. There are Elemental Training Rooms and Combat Training Rooms available for use. You can book one for 2 credits per 4 hours. The Elemental Cultivation Room is more expensive—4 credits per hour.

A hand rose again, and Emilia, seeing who it was, immediately replied, "No, Rina, you can’t use any training room without first giving credits."

Rina, red-faced in embarrassment, put down her hand.

Emilia sighed, already tired, and continued her talk.

"As for the library, it has two sections: a free section with basic knowledge and a restricted section. You can borrow a book from the restricted section for 7 credits, valid for one week."

The students began whispering among themselves until Emilia’s voice turned sharp.

"Now pay attention."

Her expression turned serious.

"Every year, the academy hosts a mandatory tournament. It is fought between clubs created by students. Currently, there are 11 clubs. After three months, these clubs will start recruiting first-years for the tournament, which takes place in six months."

She paused.

"The game is called—Warden’s Way."

A wave of excited chatter burst through the room.

"I love the WW game!"

"I’m a pro at WW!"

Alex blinked in confusion, watching everyone cheer.

What’s this game? Is it something only nobles know about?

Suddenly—

"QUIET!"

A loud thunder-like voice silenced everyone.

"Let me finish first. The tournament is a core part of your education. Participation is mandatory. Last year’s champion was the Seraph Club."

Emilia stepped down from the stage.

"That’s all for today. I’ll see you all tomorrow."

She ran away thinking, I don’t want to answer these brats’ stupid questions. Why does this job feel so tiring?

As she exited, the buzz resumed. Students chatted animatedly, some already discussing strategies.

Alex sat quietly, watching the others laugh and talk. His eyes drifted toward a girl—her beauty almost unnatural, as though nature had carved her from snow and light. Her icy-white eyes met his for a moment... then she turned away.

In his mind, two voices echoed.

White Alex said in hope:

"Hey, she was looking at us."

Black Alex (dispirited):

"You know... once someone betrays you, they can do it again. How can you trust so easily?"

Alex clenched his fist and averted his gaze.

Then the door creaked open again.

An old man entered. His long white beard touched his belly, his wrinkled skin creased like dry paper, and his eyes were dull yet sharp with age.

"Hello everyone," he greeted, his voice calm and slow. "I’m Professor Hugo Langston. I’ll be your History teacher."

With a simple flick of his fingers, the words appeared on the board, drawn by the Air Element:

What Happened to Earth?

"Who can answer this?" he asked, scanning the room.

Several hands rose.

He gestured toward a girl in the front row. "Please, Ms. Frostreign."

Selene Frostreign replied confidently from her seat, "When Earth was destroyed, mythical creatures appeared. They taught humans how to cultivate the elements."

Professor Hugo nodded slightly. "Hmm... anyone with a different answer?"

Silence.

"Very well," he began. "Let’s start there."

"Around 3,000 years ago, humans destroyed Earth themselves. They were at the peak of technological advancement. The rich had control over devastating weapons—nuclear bombs. When conflicts escalated, they launched these weapons at each other and fled to another planet they had prepared."

A muscular hand rose from the 2nd row.

Professor saw this and sighed. "Yes, Mr. Drakthorn?"

"Why would they give power to cowards?" Varek said with a smug smile.

"That’s a great question from someone like you," Professor Hugo said with a smile but didn’t answer and continued the lecture.

"Most of humanity perished. Less than one percent survived—those who were hidden far from civilization."

"One theory says the destruction released Earth’s Elemental Energy, causing both humans and animals to evolve."

"Another theory claims the energy shattered, giving birth to new elemental energy and mutating life on the earth to adapt."

"When Earth became infused with raw elemental energy, it attracted mythical creatures from the outer realms. These beings came to harvest it... and found humans to be beings possessing pure Elemental power in their blood."

He narrowed his eyes.

"To them, we were weak, yet filled with potential. They consumed humans. Became addicted. They began farming us like livestock. And to enhance the flavor, they taught us how to cultivate."

Students gasped. Then one student said in a loud tone, "We were slaves of mythical creatures?"

Professor nodded with an evil smile. "Yes, humans lived as slaves for centuries."

Then his voice grew stronger.

"But then... Ten Great Sages rose from the ashes. They built the Elemental Excellence Academy, turning it into a fortress. For 100 years, they fought against the mythical beasts, saving humans bit by bit. Every battle brought more survivors into safety."

"Eventually, the creatures vanished. Some say they were killed. Others say they left."

"Of the ten sages, only eight are well-known. The remaining two are shrouded in mystery."

"And those who fled to Mars...?" He shook his head. "They became slaves to technology. They are weak now. Inferior to us. Commoners, some say, are no different from them. Burdens."

Alex frowned at the last sentence. He raised his hand.

The professor replied with a sharp tone, disgust apparent in his voice. "Yes?"

Alex stood up. "Professor, you told us that we evolved and got cultivation from mythical creatures, but you didn’t tell us about the monsters. Why are they so strong? Why is their elemental power similar to ours?"

Professor Hugo frowned. "That’s a great question, I must admit. Monsters are descended from evolved animals and mythical creatures. That’s one of the reasons their element is similar to ours and also their strength."

He paused and looked around the class.

"Any questions?"

No one raised their hand.

Professor Hugo nodded and said with a smile, "We will continue from here in our next class."

Riven Veylor sat in the second row, casually leaning forward on his desk, a subtle smile playing on his lips and amusement flickering in his eyes. Beside him sat a striking girl with long black hair, deep blue eyes, and a refined ski-slope nose. Her lips, full and symmetrical, gave her an effortlessly alluring charm.

Lyra Duskthorn, dressed in a dark blue skirt and white shirt tucked neatly beneath a short blue coat, shifted slightly in her seat. Her black leggings hugged her slender legs, while the fitted coat emphasized her slim waist and ample breasts. She looked like she was about to melt into the seat—her face flushed as red as a tomato.

Riven’s hand rested casually on her thigh, giving it a gentle squeeze now and then. Each time, her breath hitched slightly, and she cast a nervous glance toward the front.

They were supposed to be listening to Professor Hugo’s lecture.

What’s he doing? Lyra thought, her heart fluttering. His hand feels so warm... No! Focus, focus! Before Professor Hugo notices...

She clenched her fists under the desk and tried to force her attention forward, but the warmth of Riven’s touch, the casual affection, and that half-lidded gaze he gave her—it was almost impossible to ignore.

She had loved him since she first met him at a noble’s banquet when she was just eight. After all these years, she was finally close to him—and it felt like her heart was beating too fast for her body to handle.

After Professor Hugo left all students started leaving with excited chatter.

Lyra shot up from her seat as if jolted by a spark. A tiny gasp slipped out before she caught it, her eyes wide with embarrassment and barely contained frustration.

She gave Riven a glare, cheeks blazing red, her lips pressed into a pout. Then, with a dramatic huff, she stomped her foot—not in anger, but in a way that only made her look more adorable.

Riven kept looking at her swaying hips until she vanished outside of the door. Then Riven came to his senses and looked around and saw that class was empty everyone has left.

Riven thought She is really beautiful, her personality is also to my liking, if I didn’t had the system I would have fallen in love with her.
