Chapter 51: Elemental Excellence Academy: Commoner Among Elites
As Selene opened her dorm room, her face scrunched. The room was small, its walls faded and stained by time, the once-white paint now a dull, uneven cream. A single bed sat pushed against the corner—its wooden frame slightly creaky, the mattress sunken in the middle as if burdened by countless restless nights. The bedsheet was clean but old, patterned with faint blue stripes worn from too many washes.
Beside the bed stood a lone chair—metal-framed, paint chipping at the edges, with a wobbly leg that made it rock ever so slightly when touched. It faced the window, as if someone once sat there often, staring outside.
The window was large enough to let in sunlight during the day, but its glass was slightly smudged, and the rusted latches creaked when moved. Beyond it, you could see the vast blue sea and hear the sounds of waves.
"This is the room of first rank student," Selene said out loud with a frustrated tone.
The same scene repeated for Riven Veylor, the 2nd Rank student, who had a similar room, but now the chair was broken on the floor.
Kaelan Ignis, 3rd Rank, was watching through the window in a similar kind of room and gritting his teeth, his blue eyes seething in fury.
Varek Drakthorn, the 4th Rank, was lying on the bed, already sleeping.
Whereas Rina Roarhart, the 5th Rank student, was sitting on the chair looking at the distant sea with concern and worry etched on her face. "What should I do? How can I help Alex? I have to do something. Should I ask Sister Emilia? Let’s do that tomorrow."
In a dark room, as moonlight came through the window, making shadows of a chair, a person sitting opened his eyes as the door creaked open. A person in all black, merging with the darkness, entered and bowed, saying in a whisper-like voice, "It’s done, Leader."
A heavy voice with a chuckle came from the person sitting on the chair. "So, where’s he now?"
The other person gave a sadistic smile and said, "The commoner went toward the outer mountain wall and found a little cave. He is in there."
Then a laugh echoed in the room, eerie and cold.
Alex opened his eyes and saw as the darkness started fading and a little light began to appear.
He tried to sit up but laid back down as he noticed Hati still sleeping on his chest.
Hati had grown a little in the two months since he’d been with Alex.
Hati, noticing movement, opened his eyes.
"Woof," and started licking Alex’s face.
Alex said, laughing and moving Hati away from his chest, "Let’s go, we have to find the washroom to freshen up, then eat something, and then after that, we have to go to class."
Ring!
His bracelet vibrated and a notification on a small square blue screen appeared above the bracelet:
TODAY’S CLASSES
Morning: Introduction to EE Academy Rules and Attendance
Homeroom Teacher: Emilia Aurelwyn
Immediately After Morning Class: History by Professor Hugo Langston
Afternoon: Introduction to Elemental Power: Theodore Stormgaze
Alex said thoughtfully, "So that’s how they’ll send the schedule."
As Alex navigated the screen, he found the map of the Academy. He found the washroom, cafeteria on the first floor, and class on the 2nd floor.
Alex moved quietly through the dimly lit corridors of the Elemental Excellence Academy, the soles of his boots tapping softly against the stone floor. The hallway stretched long and cold, lined with towering arches that cast elongated shadows beneath the flickering torches mounted on the walls. Every flame danced as if alive, sending orange light crawling across the stones—walls.
The ceiling rose high above him—intricate carvings twisted up the columns—serpents entwined with dragons, flames frozen in motion, eyes carved so precisely they seemed to follow him as he passed. The air was cool and heavy.
He turned a corner, the corridor narrowing. A faded tapestry hung along the wall, depicting an ancient battle of mages and monstrous beasts still looking vibrant as if it was made a day ago.
As he ascended the spiral staircase, his voice of shoes echoed. The metal railing was cool to the touch, its ironwork twisted into runes.
Alex reached the first floor. The corridor here was similar to the ground floor, with more abundant windows. Morning light started creeping and lighting up the corridor.
He found the door to the male washroom. The wooden door was heavy and polished brown with black iron hinges shaped like dragons. When he pushed it open, it creaked—a long, protesting groan that echoed far louder than he expected.
Inside, the bathroom was made of polished black stone, cold and gleaming under the morning light that filtered through a small barred window near the ceiling. Mirrors were mounted above ancient marble basins, and the faucets were shaped like open-mouthed gargoyles, their eyes empty and hollow.
After Alex freshened up, he went back outside the castle where Hati was waiting, also done with his business in the good garden of the Academy.
Both went to the cafeteria on the first floor opposite the washroom at the end of the corridor. Alex entered a big hall with multiple tables set in open and there was a barricaded section too.
Alex went to the counter where Aunty Chef he met at the Tower of Test was standing.
Alex said with a warm smile, "Hello Aunty Chef!"
Aunty Chef replied with a smile spreading towards her eyes and gesturing her hand, "Ahh! Kid, you made it, congrats I think."
Alex replied in a cheerful tone, "Yes Aunty Chef, your food really helped me, thank you."
"No problem," she said, waving her hand.
"What do you want to eat, kid?"
Alex said, "The usual, the steak and milk."
Aunty Chef laughed and said, "I’ll give you an extra piece for that little wolf standing beside you."
She brought the tray in a minute and put it on the iron slab near the counter and said, "Here, pick it up with your bracelet hand."
Alex couldn’t understand but followed what she said and extended his hand with the academy bracelet and tried to pick it up. Then a blue screen flashed:
-2 Credits
Aunty Chef sighed and said, "That’s how it is, kid. I’m not allowed to give anyone free food. I can only give extra portion with the same charge, nothing else. You have to make yourself strong and earn these credits. Take care of yourself, kid."
Alex nodded with a smile and went to a table in a corner with Hati beside him on another chair.
Alex thought, "I have only two credits remaining for one meal only. I’ll get around 5 Credits for today’s class. Let’s find out ways we can earn credits."
As he finished his meal, students started coming. Most of the people were wearing sophisticated clothes and all were casting curious looks toward him. Alex moved out into the corridor and went to the 2nd floor.
1st Year Classroom — the words were etched in bold, gleaming golden letters on an arched slab of dark mahogany above the heavy wooden door. The door itself stood tall, its surface carved with swirling patterns of vines and stars, inlaid with thin veins of gold that shimmered faintly in the light — an artistic blend of elegance and ancient craftsmanship.
As Alex pushed the door open with a soft creak, a wave of warm, slightly dusty air greeted him. He stepped into a vast amphitheater-like hall, its ceiling vaulted high above with arched wooden beams darkened by age and etched with runes that pulsed faintly with Elemental Power.
The classroom wasn’t flat — it descended in wide, gradual steps, each row lower than the last, forming a semi-circle around a raised central platform. Rows of desks, carved from polished darkwood, were built into the steps. Each desk had a matching chair.
The stage at the bottom was circular, made from polished black stone veined with silver—behind the platform stood a towering chalkboard framed in ancient bronze.
On the side walls, tall stained-glass windows stretched from floor to ceiling, filtering in multicolored light. Each window depicted a mythical creature from history, fire dragon, fire phoenix and many others; their eyes seeming to follow Alex as he walked down the aisle. Flickering torches mounted into the walls flickered with yellow glow.
Despite the room’s age, everything felt alive —
The classroom was empty. A heavy silence lingered in the air. Alex stepped inside, his boots clicking against the stone floor, breaking the silence.
Click—Clack.
Each step echoed through the grand, tiered hall. Beside him, Hati’s soft paws made gentler, muted sounds — like whispers following the sharp rhythm of his master’s footsteps.
They ascended the central aisle between rows of desks. Alex reached the last row. He slid into the seat, resting his arms on the desk. Hati leapt up with a soft thud, curling up on the smooth wooden surface in front of him. For a while, there was only silence...
