Chapter 80 - 79 - Brother?
Chapter 80: Chapter 79 - Brother?
Caliste’s eyes widened as he heard the words coming out of Liana’s mouth.
His brother...?
He didn’t even know himself that he had a brother. Her mother or his sister had never even mentioned it, and why was he standing there with a hood, his back leaning against a large rock?
It looked like he was just trying to look cool in front of his brother.
"What are you talking about?" Caliste asked in a whisper as he slowed his pace toward the exit of the cave.
"He’s another son of the Demon King. I don’t know the whole story, but this man right there is very dangerous. And if he’s here, it means there’s something that he wants from you, or maybe he’s here under the orders of the Demon King."
Caliste was getting more and more surprised as time passed; still, he believed that this "brother" was simply someone who was born of another woman than Ava. After all, he had never heard of him in over 18 years. He doubted that they would have hidden him, right?
Caliste gathered his courage and began walking toward his "brother" with a small frown on his face.
He couldn’t look like he hated him since they were part of the same team, so he was just slightly frowning, showing his annoyance at his presence.
As they got only a few steps away from him, the man in the hood slowly turned his head toward him, revealing his face, and the resemblance was striking. The main difference between the two of them was the long demonic horns coming out of his forehead, but that was about it.
’Wait... are we really brothers?’
"Father told me that we looked alike, but this is next level."
Caliste was surprised by the words he used.
’Father... he’s talking about the Demon King so casually.’
"Why are you here?" Caliste asked right away, not in the least interested in small talk.
His brother just shrugged before asking another question, "How are Mother and Sister? Do they miss me?"
The man immediately noticed the frown on Caliste’s face deepening as he began to giggle slightly.
"Let me guess. They never talked about me, did they?"
Caliste didn’t answer nor did he move his head.
He didn’t know why, but he felt threatened by the presence of his brother, who was slowly getting closer to him. This man was extremely dangerous, and Liana, who was inside him, agreed.
’Be careful... he’s not someone you can handle even with the energy from the Molten Core.’
The man took steps toward Caliste slowly as he wrapped his arm around his shoulders while Caliste just stood still as if he were frozen in place.
"You know..." He clicked his tongue. "There’s something I really hate. Do you know what that is?"
Caliste didn’t move or answer.
"Haha! That’s what I hate—disrespect. When I ask a question..." He leaned forward. "You answer it, understood?"
"Yes..."
Caliste finally muttered after a few seconds, the whole heavy atmosphere dissipating right away.
"Why are you here?" Caliste repeated.
He sighed, removing his arm from around Caliste. "I don’t know. Father wants to see you. He asked me to bring you as soon as you got out of that weird place."
"The Demon King wants to meet me? Are you serious?"
He rolled his eyes. "Yeah. He wants to meet you. What’s the big deal?"
Caliste didn’t even try to explain to the man before him what the big deal was. Still, he wasn’t sure if going to see the Demon King was a good idea. After all, he had just learned that the man could spy on him at any given time. If he wanted to see him, then he would be here at the exit of the cave.
There was also the fact that he had shown up at the cave. He even identified that it was Liana’s magic. He must know that the person Caliste met inside there was Liana.
He must have some "questions" to ask him.
Caliste also didn’t want to see the Demon King. He had only seen him once in his life, and it had been far more than enough.
Instead of answering, Caliste started walking past him with a smile on his face. "Well, if you see him, you can tell him that I’m not interested in meeting him."
But as soon as he got past his brother, he felt an arm pressing against his chest, keeping him in place.
"I’m sorry..." his brother smirked. "But you have no choice. You either come with me willingly, or I’ll have to bring you by force. It’s your choice, really."
His brother wasn’t stupid. He knew that he was stronger than Caliste.
There was no doubt about it.
Caliste also couldn’t use his [Heavenly Demonic Thrust] here. There were too many people around, and he didn’t want to have it linked back to him.
’I don’t think you can win, Caliste,’ Liana said in the back of his mind. ’This man managed to defeat me when I was much stronger than in the past. He has been training under the Demon King’s personal guidance. He has skills and strength that are out of this world. For you to beat him... you’d have to give it your everything, which could expose your identity.’
Caliste heard Liana’s voice. She was trying to tell him to just follow him all the way to the Demon King, but... Caliste didn’t want to.
"Before we go, can I ask you one question?"
The man smiled brightly. "Sure, what is it?"
"My mother and sister—what did you do to them? They never talked about you once; there were no pictures of you in the castle. It really looked as if you didn’t exist to them anymore."
He clicked his tongue while smiling. "Well, you know... they’re just weak. They didn’t understand my choice because of their lack of strength. That’s about it. I didn’t do anything against them in particular. I didn’t try to attack them or anything."
"Weak? What do you mean?"
He slapped his hand on Caliste’s back. "We’re demons! It’s normal for us to kill a few people to become stronger, and they didn’t like that very much. That’s about it."
Caliste could feel it. This man was clearly hiding things from him right now. There had to be a bigger reason that Ava and Aleia would not even utter his name. It had to be significant; they were some of the most loving people Caliste had ever seen in his life.
And depending on his answer, he would either go willingly or by force.
"Pfft... nothing important really. Back when I still lived with them, there were a few maids that annoyed me. So, I killed them."
"A few? How many did you kill?"
He burst out laughing. "I don’t know, maybe a dozen? I killed those who dared to refuse what I asked of them. I heard that they were mocking you, little brother. You should have done the same thing as me. Those maids are here to serve us. They’re our slaves. Your orders should be their sole reason for living."
’Slaves?’ Caliste felt disgusted hearing those words coming out of that man’s mouth. "What about people that are weaker than you? Are they also your slaves?"
He started laughing even louder. "You’re smart, aren’t you? Yeah. That’s it. Those who are weaker should always listen to those stronger. If they don’t, then the only thing they deserve is to die. Father told me that, and ever since then... my life has been completely different."
’Father... what a fucking weirdo.’
Caliste was starting to understand why Ava and Aleia had never talked about him. The man in front of him was the worst example for a young man. They didn’t want him to become like him. Maybe that’s why they were so loving toward him; they wanted to make sure that he wouldn’t lose himself.
’Who knows what would have happened without them? There’s a chance that my revenge would have been much more bloody.’
"So, are you coming or what?" His older brother asked as he continued to tap against his back.
Caliste didn’t answer just yet as he tried to think if there was a chance to win against him. He looked at him and tried to figure out just how powerful that man was. But... he couldn’t. Most of his strength was well hidden. There was no way for him to do so.
He hadn’t liked his answers, but Caliste wasn’t trying to die right now.
"How long will this take? I’ve got things to do."
His brother started cackling. He was talking as if the Demon King asking for him was a bother.
"I don’t know how long it’ll take."
Caliste sighed.
"Mhm... is that so?"
"Yeah, let’s go."
Caliste shook his head. "Actually, I don’t think it will work. If the Demon King wants to meet with me, he should be the one to come here."
His brother’s eyebrows raised. Never in a million years had he expected his little brother to say something like this.
It made him laugh even more.
"I guess you really want that beating."
