Chapter 67: Chapter 66 - A Quest in the Dwarven Territory

Caliste was starting to realize that maybe he had made a mistake. He shouldn’t have accepted her help. The quest might be a lot faster than what he had planned. However, both she and Siglius had pressed him so hard that he had no choice but to concede, and if he had said no, then Siglius had said that he wouldn’t allow him to leave the grounds of the Academy.

That’s why Caliste was now stuck with the strongest student in the entire academy, Rachel, who was coincidentally the strongest mage in the entire school by a long mile, and the quest Lucius had taken seemed to be related to magic. She was perfect for the job, normally that is.

After all, Caliste had been planning on investigating some things, which would no longer be possible with her around. He would have to do so in secret now, which was more than annoying.

The two of them were now inside a train that was going at incredibly high speed underground.

Caliste had to admit that the way the world had developed in 100 years was absolutely fantastic and groundbreaking. Those kinds of things didn’t exist in the past. They would have to go around on horses and the like.

The train was empty, with only Rachel and Caliste inside, who had been eyeing each other since earlier, no one trying to break the ice that is... until Rachel finally opened her mouth.

"You know, I was there when you were ranked the strongest student out of all first-years."

Caliste didn’t raise an eyebrow as he simply nodded. He remembered a presence back then, and now that he was told this, he understood that she was the one who had been there, watching and testing him.

"You’re not surprised?"

"Not really."

Caliste was dry and didn’t give her much to work with, but she did.

"I heard of what happened in the Elven Territory. You managed to beat someone quite strong, didn’t you?"

"I didn’t. Someone else did; I woke up and everything was over."

That was the story Caliste had decided to tell, and it was the one he had shared with everyone he had seen ever since that incident. No one could know that he was truly the one at the origin of all this.

"Mhm... by the way, why did you refuse all discipleships? Wouldn’t that have been useful for you?"

Caliste sighed, annoyed by the questions but still answered. "None of those teachers can teach me anything. Why would I become their ’disciple’?"

"Because you could gain a lot from it."

"I’m sure..." Caliste said arrogantly as he simply looked away toward the outside of the train, where he could only see darkness and a wall of dirt moving at an incredible speed.

"Why did you take on such a difficult quest?"

She looked like she was trying to make small talk, and Caliste didn’t want to be rude, so he continued to humor her. However, it was already starting to piss him off just slightly.

"I wanted to go to the Dwarven Territory. That’s all."

"And you didn’t take an easier quest?"

Caliste sighed as he suddenly snapped his head and looked at her dead in the eyes, the atmosphere inside the train immediately getting heavier, much heavier than before. Rachel almost had shivers as Caliste continued to stare at her, almost looking like he wanted to kill her if she continued to ask questions.

"It’s none of your business. Now, it’s great that you’re here to ’help’ me. But I don’t expect you to do anything while we’re there. You can just stay inside our room and have some fun there. I’ll do this quest alone."

The sudden change in his behavior was certainly strange.

He looked angry, really angry that he was being helped by the strongest student in the Academy.

Rachel seemed to understand something as she began smiling while looking at him. ’He wants to prove himself. How cute.’ She had once been the same in the past, so she understood where he was coming from. Still, the quest Caliste had taken on was far above his strength. It was normal for Siglius to have assigned someone to him.

"Alright. I’ll let you do it on your own. I’ll only interfere if you get in trouble."

"We’ll stay in the Dwarven Territory as long as the quest is not completed. You know that, right?"

Rachel nodded. It wasn’t the first time she was doing a quest; of course, she knew how they worked. Nevertheless, she found it funny that a student in his first year had so much "drive" about himself. It almost reminded her of herself when she was that age.

While that was going on, inside the Dwarven Mines, a strange phenomenon was happening, and it was starting to scare a lot of the miners who no longer wanted to enter the deepest parts of the cave where the rarest minerals could be found.

"Please, please... we don’t want to go down there!" one of them pleaded as tears ran down both sides of their faces.

They were pleading to the man in charge, the one who dictated everything happening inside the mines, who stood on top of a small hill of minerals in the middle of the cave. He did not care about the lives of the miners; he only wanted profit. Losing lives was just normal to him.

That is... until a strong energy began exuding from the deepest part of the cave.

The magic runes, which had been dormant ever since they had found this new tunnel, all began lighting up at the same time.

"W-What’s happening?!"

"I-I don’t know! L-Let’s run!"

Everyone panicked as they all started running out of the cave as fast as they could.

However, inside the cave, something had changed. At the end of the tunnel, a timer had now appeared.

A timer of one week on the dot.

And it would only be discovered a few hours later as guards from the Dwarven Territory finally arrived.
