Chapter 65: Chapter 64 - Something Only Caliste Knows

Caliste was too stunned to speak. He had no choice but to take a few seconds to calm himself down, as he had just heard confirmation of his theory.

’She knew... she knew that I would return. But how? How did she know...’

Caliste looked down with his two hands pressed against the wooden table as dozens of thoughts flooded his mind. He tried to make sense of this fact. He was trying to understand how she could have anticipated such a thing, but he had no idea.

Liana was the best mage in the entire world. She was the one who knew magic better than anyone else.

’Did she manage to see into the future?’

That was the only possible option by now.

The rest didn’t make sense. That was the only option remaining.

"Caliste?" The child-like Liana flew in front of Caliste’s face, waving her hand in front of his eyes, trying to bring him back to the current situation, as she wasn’t too sure what was currently going through his mind. "Are you okay?"

He shook his head.

It was a good thing that this room was far away from the rest of the students and isolated. Otherwise, with the information being shared right now, it would have made waves across the entire world.

"Right... something from the past."

Caliste closed his eyes as memories surged.

"Caliste! Don’t go in alone, you dummy!" Liana, the greatest mage, said with a smile on her face as she tapped her staff against his head. She looked like she was punishing a little kid. "You could have gotten hurt in there."

"That’s right, Caliste. You’re strong, but don’t become too arrogant; that’s when things will start to get dangerous for all of us," Alek said as he placed his spear behind his back with a smile on his face. "Still, that was amazing."

They had just come out of a dangerous battle inside one of the many demonic camps. However, only Caliste had been needed to defeat such a camp, as the others had all been waiting for his signal to enter the camp at once. But... that signal never came.

"Right... sorry. I got a little too excited while fighting!" Caliste said, rubbing the back of his head with a big grin on his face, a little embarrassed, both of his cheeks flushed red.

"Whatever, let’s go. We need to get moving. The Demon King’s Castle is still really far away..." Liana said, pointing over the multiple hills with floating islands at the very end of it.

Caliste opened his eyes again, and he could see the child-like Liana right in his face.

"Good dreams?"

Caliste shrugged, as he had just seen a fragment of the past that seemed almost... meaningless.

"You wanted me to prove myself, right? Well, ask me what you want to know. I’ll answer you."

Liana noticed the change in behavior on Caliste’s face. He looked sad as he opened his eyes again. His shoulders were slouched, and he looked at the table in front of him with a gaze devoid of emotion.

’Ah... life was so good back then. Why did they all have to ruin it?’

Caliste hadn’t remembered smiling that much in a very long time. He had missed it. Seeing himself again, inside of his mind, having fun talking with the others about defeating the Demon King was certainly a good time he would go back to for anything in the world. While he had vowed to take revenge on those opposing him... he just missed having fun and being clear-minded. Something that he would never get again.

"What would Liana always do after a fight?"

A small smirk appeared at the corner of Caliste’s mouth. "Mhm... scold me."

"But how?"

"With her stick. She would hit my head."

The child-like Liana’s eyes widened. "Y-You really are him..."

The question she had just asked was not something that could be found in history books. It was only something a person who had been living with the party could have known. And even then, there had never been much mention of Caliste in any of the history books available. By changing history, they had kept the information about Caliste to a minimum to keep people in the dark about what had really happened back then.

"But how... how are you here? H-How did Master know?"

Liana, or at least the fake Liana, seemed to be having the same questions as Caliste as she began murmuring to herself while walking around the room over and over again.

"Were you really a traitor back then?"

Caliste rolled his eyes. "Is that really the question you have for me? Really?"

He almost looked disappointed by it all.

"I wasn’t a traitor, if it wasn’t obvious by now."

"D-Do you want to find my master to kill her? Are you here to take revenge on your old life?" Liana said as she immediately backed away from Caliste, pressing her body against the opposite side of the room, ready to open the door and flee as fast as humanly possible if given the chance to do so.

"No. I need to talk to her. I need to ask her questions about what happened and why she expected me to reincarnate inside another body. She’s the key to all this. She’s the only one who can help me."

"What about the other heroes?"

Caliste clenched both his hands as he took a deep breath. "Don’t talk about those traitors in front of me. If I could, I would rip all of their heads off right now with a snap of my fingers." Caliste noticed the look of uncertainty on Liana’s face as he began making threats to the other heroes, hatred showing on his face. "Liana is different. I already told you that. Anyway, do you have any clue where she ran off to? How about anyone who might know about her?"

The child-like Liana frowned a little before opening her mouth. "Ever since she disappeared, I’ve been looking for clues about where she might have gone, and the only thing that I know is that the last time any news circulated about her in the world... she had been in the Dwarven Territory."
