Chapter 29: Where the fuck are they?!
"Didn’t I just clear one?"
"You cleared it without registering. You haven’t cleared any gates since your hunter card has been issued."
"And if we can’t clear the gate in a day?"
Cheon Areum’s upper body shifted as he faced Yoon Seoyul. Driving while only looking ahead, he spoke calmly.
"Aera will take care of Rian. She has younger siblings, so I trust her. You can rest assured."
Slumping back into the passenger seat, Cheon Areum let out a silent breath, his gaze fixed on the window. The bustling cityscape had long faded into memory, replaced by an endless stretch of green. Towering trees lined both sides of the road, their leaves swaying gently in the wind.
"You’ve been driving for a while now. How far is the gate?"
"It’s in the middle of nowhere. It’s a long drive from Seoul."
"Should I get a driving license too?"
Cheon Areum mumbled, talking to himself. In his previous body, he couldn’t even handle driving, so he never got his driver’s license—but surprisingly, Cheon Areum also didn’t have one. Maybe he didn’t need one since he couldn’t afford to buy a car in the first place.
"You don’t need one. I’ll drive."
"....?"
He glanced at Yoon Seoyul, confused. It wasn’t like Yoon Seoyul would always be there to drive him wherever he wanted to go, so what was the point in saying that? But he could just hire a driver if it came to that. Getting a driver’s license was still a bit...
"How’s she doing now?"
"..... She’s still unconscious, but her life isn’t in danger."
Cheon Areum had held back—only for their grandmother to go ahead and almost unalive herself. Would Rian be upset if she passed away? As far as he was aware, their grandmother was the last family member they had. Rian had even agreed to live with her in the past, so he must have some kind of lingering affection for her despite everything.
"Do you need a hair tie?"
"Huh? Oh, not really. I’m just trying to find the one Rian gave me... I lost it, as you know."
Yoon Seoyul, catching a glimpse of his phone screen, must have noticed him browsing for hair ties online. He had been trying his best to find the same one Rian had given him, but he couldn’t find it anywhere. There was something else he found on the internet, though.
"Have you seen the articles? They say we’re dating."
"Hm."
Hm? That’s it? So he doesn’t care?
"Won’t there be a lot of reporters waiting for us to show up? Will you address the rumors?"
"No. It doesn’t matter. If you want to do it, you’ll have to wait for another opportunity. There won’t be any media at this gate. It’s on private property—entry to the public is restricted."
"But they can still wait just outside that district, right?"
"They can’t."
Well, fine by me... I put extra effort into getting ready, thinking my photos would be everywhere on the internet after this...
"Don’t forget to put your phone in your inventory before entering the gate."
"Yes, yes."
Pouting, he laid back in the reclined seat as he downloaded another game to play.

*THUD*
Closing the car door, Cheon Areum and Yoon Seoyul both got off at the same time. A ground stretching to the end of his sight lay bare. The black gate in the middle was easy to spot amid the greenland. The gate was surrounded by the other team members and gate supervisors. Seeing them both walking toward them, they all turned to glance in their direction curiously.
"The new S+-Class?"
"That’s him?"
"Doesn’t he look a bit... delicate?"
Quite a few new faces were in the crowd, but there were some familiar ones too. Kim Ryung, Inho, and Hwan seemed to always be in their team. Yoon Seoyul preferred them over anyone. The others were all A-Classes from a different guild. Aera could have joined too as the only other free member, but Yoon Seoyul decided to pay her the same for taking care of Rian.
The total members, including Cheon Areum, were nine. The guild members stood to the side, prim and proper, waiting for Yoon Seoyul, but the others circled, gossiping about the S+-Class joining them for the gate—the first outsiders to see him.
"Master."
Acknowledging Yoon Seoyul, Kim Ryung slightly bowed to them. Cheon Areum had noticed before—Kim Ryung always showed respect for Yoon Seoyul whenever they were out in the open, while in private, he was more carefree. Inho and Hwan, following his lead, bowed next.
"There’s no need for this... Where’s Jihyeon?"
"He canceled at the last minute..."
"He suddenly went into heat because of his Alpha."
Kim Ryung muttered in a low voice when Inho bluntly spoke. A quiet silence fell between them, which was broken by the others.
"Hello."
"I’m Seungkwan!"
"Are you really an omega?"
"What’s your class type?"
All four of the members surrounded Cheon Areum, asking him all sorts of questions. All of them were a head taller than him. They were also definitely Alphas...
"Do you want to lead this time?"
Apathetically blocking the others, Yoon Seoyul stood in front of him. Cheon Areum tilted his head, pondering over it for a moment.
"I’ll do it."
"Master, you do it. I don’t feel comfortable with him taking the lead... He’s too wild..."
Inho began, but as Cheon Areum glared at him, he quickly shut his mouth.
"I don’t mind it."
"Same! I want to see him use his abilities!"
Seungkwan and the other one standing next to him agreed readily. The opinion of the last two didn’t matter anymore.
"I’ll help too."
Yoon Seoyul said before taking him by the hand toward the gate. The other members closely followed behind them. They stopped before the supervisor.
"The radius for this one is dangerous. It’s been labeled an emergency S-Class gate. I need you guys to clear it as soon as possible."
The woman standing closest to the gate held a tablet in her hands as she spoke, her eyes fixed on the screen. After typing something, a thin red line encircling the gate lost its color. The woman stepped aside.
"Good luck, Yoon Seoyul."
She said with a gentle smile on her face.

It was nighttime. The abandoned town lay cloaked in a heavy veil of isolation. Not a single soul lurked among the oddly shaped buildings, each structure casting long, distorted shadows under the pale glow of scattered streetlights. It felt as though time had been abruptly halted—shops still open, their doors swaying gently in the breeze, stalls left uncovered with goods slowly rotting in place, and homes unlocked, lights still flickering dimly inside. Everything remained exactly as it had been... except the people were gone, as if they’d vanished mid-breath.
"Still nothing?"
Cheon Areum called out to check again.
"No, it shows the number, but it can’t detect any of the monsters."
Inho laid the map out, enabling the others to see it too. The blue map displayed numbers with their status and the area around them, which should have had red dots locating the monsters—but it only showed the town’s map without anything else.
"S-Class gates are all the same in a way. Your map always malfunctions in them."
Hwan shook his head wearily. They had been walking around the town for a while now.
"At least we can see where we came from, or else someone like you—who can’t even tell right from left—would be lost in here for the next decade."
Inho declared, closing the map. They both started bickering with each other again. Cheon Areum pressed his fingers between his forehead—his head was already starting to hurt. The non-guild members had decided to separate and search the buildings, and Yoon Seoyul stared at him even now without a word.
"Haa...."
Cheon Areum dropped onto the road, limbs spread.
"What’s wrong with you now?"
"Are you tired?"
Inho and Hwan, pausing their fight, looked over in concern. Yoon Seoyul crouched down next to his face.
"Want me to carry you?"
Cheon Areum frowned and raised a brow at the unexpected offer. How lowly did he think of him?
"Quiet down. I’m going to search now."
Closing his eyes, he focused on scattering his own energy, mingling with the town’s negative energy. It quietly stretched along the streets like fog, invisible to others’ eyes. They were everywhere but nowhere at the same time. That explained the number... A thousand... or more?
"Ugh..."
A sharp headache, like a nail being hammered into his skull, intruded. His upper body instantly shot up. Clutching his head, he opened his eyes. A person hiding behind a stall was peeking out, looking at them with an almost crooked neck—but as soon as Cheon Areum noticed, the shadow moved back behind the stall in a quick motion. He narrowed his eyes, tilting his head, still staring at the stall.
"What’s wrong? Did you find them?"
"Yes."
