Chapter 28: The charm of the main character
Chapter 28: The charm of the main character
"Can I?"
Placing the cup back on the kitchen counter, Yoon Seoyul walked toward him—just as a loud shout came from inside the bedroom.
"No!!"
Rian, who had been sleeping like a log, was now fully awake, standing on the bed as he shouted at the top of his lungs.
"No! He can’t sleep here!"
Amused by the reaction, Cheon Areum held his chin and nodded solemnly.
"And why can’t he sleep here?"
"Hyung! He’s an alpha!"
"I meant to ask this before too—but how are you so sure he’s an alpha? He could be a beta, for all you know."
Rian’s eyes narrowed as he switched his gaze to Yoon Seoyul standing behind him.
"I can tell!"
"You can tell if he’s an alpha or not?"
Rian nodded vigorously, his expression genuinely trusting. Rian hadn’t yet presented his second gender (he was too young for differentiation), so there was no way anyone could normally tell if someone was an alpha, omega, or beta. Then the reason why he could tell...
"Rian, you must be a genius!"
Cheon Areum declared confidently, raising a fist in excitement. A sigh escaped Yoon Seoyul, who loomed behind him.
"Sorry, Rian. I need to talk with him."
"....."
Rian, visibly repulsed, didn’t reply. Gripping him by the shoulders from behind, Yoon Seoyul began to drag him outside.
"Wait here, Rian! I’ll be back in a minute!"
Cheon Areum hurriedly threw out the words before he was towed outside the apartment. Pressed against the wall of the entrance, Yoon Seoyul fixed him in place, his hands firm on his shoulders.
"What is it?"
He asked as Yoon Seoyul glanced down at him, hesitating before speaking in a serious tone.
"When was the last time you met with your grandmother?"
"Why do I have to tell you that?"
Cheon Areum lifted an eyebrow, gazing up at him. What did it matter to Yoon Seoyul whether he had met his grandmother or not?
"I heard about your grandmother. She had a traffic collision recently."
"You think I was the one who did it?"
Cheon Areum stared into his eyes as he spoke. There was no questioning it—Yoon Seoyul believed he was involved in causing the accident. After seeing him so readily attack her, it was only natural for him to suspect Cheon Areum. It made sense. Yoon Seoyul rightly accused him.
"You don’t believe me, do you?"
"No."
The reply came nearly instantly, like a reflex. Cheon Areum broke the eye contact, his eyes shifting away with detachment. His hand lifted with calm determination, fingertips brushing against Yoon Seoyul’s wrist to softly pry his grasp off, releasing his shoulders from his clutch.
"I believe you. If you say you didn’t do it, I’ll believe you—so just tell me if it was you or not."
"It wasn’t me...."
Cheon Areum’s movements paused as he murmured in an almost inaudible voice. Yoon Seoyul’s head dropped onto his right collarbone, inducing a shudder from him.
"Don’t do it.... I’ll take care of the custody."
Yoon Seoyul whispered. Cheon Areum stared at the wall on the left side, lost in thought. He should refuse it. Why did he feel relieved hearing that Yoon Seoyul would handle it? The main character was definitely credible, but still...
"No, it’s okay. I’ll take Rian’s custody back. I can do it now."
He spoke in an assuring tone—more for himself than Yoon Seoyul. As an S+ Class, he could easily secure custody. There was no need to worry endlessly.
"....Let me know if you need any help, then."
Yoon Seoyul’s hair scratched his cheek as he raised his head without moving back. He could almost feel his breath on his lips. Too close.
"Hyung...."
Holding the entrance door’s handle over his head, Rian called out softly. Yoon Seoyul quietly stepped back as Cheon Areum blinked a few times, still processing.
"Why are you going back inside? You’re not planning to sleep here again, are you?"
Rian muttered, boring holes into Yoon Seoyul with his glare. Patting Rian’s head, Cheon Areum locked the entrance door.
"Do you want to shower before sleeping? I got clothes that are way too big for me. You can take them."
Yoon Seoyul nodded, taking off his jacket. Rian followed after Cheon Areum, standing by the closet as he pulled out clothes for Yoon Seoyul.
"Hyung, I’m sleeping in the middle of the bed."
"Sure."
"You’re not allowed to touch him either."
"Okay..."
"You can’t go anywhere else with him during the night either."
"Why would I do that?...."
"And if he touches you, I’m going to kick him off the bed."
Cheon Areum frowned and turned to Rian.
What’s going on in his little mind?
"Don’t worry, Rian. Nothing will happen. If you don’t like it, I won’t let him sleep here again."
Clinging tightly to his neck and back, Rian used all his the strength in his small body to drag him toward the bed.
"Hyung, let’s go to sleep...."
*
"If you have a guild of your own, why are you homeless?"
Rian, still draped over him like a koala, asked Yoon Seoyul, who had taken the left side of the bed.
"I never exactly said he was homeless."
Cheon Areum promptly objected in a drowsy tone.
"Then why do you come to sleep here? Sleep at your own house!"
Rian burst out into another fit, to which Yoon Seoyul calmly replied.
"I can’t fall asleep without Cheon Areum."
"What a liar! Where is your conscience, lying to little kids like that? Tsk tsk."
Half-asleep, he rambled on thoughtlessly.
"We should be setting a good example for the next generation. Is that what you want to teach them?"
"I didn’t lie."
"...."
"..."
A quiet silence fell over the dark bedroom. Cheon Areum, too exhausted to mull over it, fell asleep without fully registering the words. After a truly long day, he only woke up after twelve hours of dreamless sleep—and even then, he was annoyed when he was awakened by the noises coming from outside the bedroom. Rian was still in the middle of the bed, fathoming no sounds whatsoever.
The only missing person was Yoon Seoyul.
Is he back from the dungeon?
Yawning and rubbing his eyes, Cheon Areum opened the bedroom door—only to meet three strangers bringing a couch into his apartment.
"Oh, hello."
All the while, Yoon Seoyul stood in the corner, watching over them. Cheon Areum greeted the men and made his way toward him. Yoon Seoyul’s fingers absently brushed back his tousled hair. His eyes lifted slowly, meeting Yoon Seoyul’s gaze with a dazed expression.
"You ordered a couch?"
"Hmm. Rian doesn’t like me sleeping on the bed."
Fixing the shirt that hung loosely from Cheon Areum’s shoulder, Yoon Seoyul guided him to sit down on the chair. Meanwhile, the men struggled to maneuver the couch into the cramped living room, managing to squeeze it in with some difficulty—it barely fit, wedged awkwardly between the wall and the dining table.
What’s going on here? Am I hallucinating?
Rubbing his eyes, he checked again.
Maybe I should also order some more furniture now.
After the men left, having done their best, Cheon Areum was fully awake.
"Did you clear the gate as scheduled?"
"Yes, but I have to go to another one in an hour. Before that, I need to get Rian to daycare."
"What daycare?"
Having said that much, he gently tapped Rian’s forehead.
"Rian, wake up. I’ll drop you off at daycare."
"Now?"
Rian murmured softly, his voice slurred with sleep as he tossed and turned restlessly on the bed. Yoon Seoyul walked over quietly, scooping him up. He cradled the boy against his chest and gently wiped his face.
"Do you want to be alone at home all day?"
"No...."
"Let’s wash up, then. I’ll pick you up as soon as we’re done."
*
"I feel I might be the worse person to raise Rian."
This was the first thought that crossed Cheon Areum’s mind as they dropped Rian at daycare. He stared out the car window, speaking solemnly.
"He still prefers you over anyone."
"I know..."
How did the original Cheon Areum take care of Rian? Was he better at it than him? He had been doing research in his free time, but firsthand experience and reading about it were two different worlds. Yoon Seoyul didn’t even have any experience—so why was he better at taking care of Rian than him? In just one night, he had won Rian over.
Had he met Rian as a stranger, would he have been able to do the same? What if it was only because Rian saw him in his older brother’s body?
"You’re thinking too much. Rian can’t live without you. No one can take your place."
Cheon Areum sighed. Yoon Seoyul was right—he was Rian’s older brother now. Nothing could change that fact.
"Where are we going now?"
"S-Class gate. Your Hunter card will be revoked if you don’t clear any gates, but doing one S-Class gate a week should be enough."
