Chapter 164: 164

"Did you confirm it?" she asked, her voice quieter than usual, but not too quiet. Having been trained as an assassin from an early age, bypassing the terrible state of her mind to get to business was something she had to learn to do, or she wouldn’t have survived in that line of work.

The pain she had gone through this time was like nothing she had ever felt before. So she stayed out of it for much longer compared to her past, but compared to other people, she got better miraculously quickly.

So, quite understandably, the man in black was shocked. He even considered the scenario where he would have to explain what happened to Alexander when he returned.

"My Lady, are you feeling okay?" he asked with a frown.

Michelle stared at him for a moment before sitting up and stretching out her hands in front of her. "No!" she said with a cold smile, her purple eyes narrowing as she tilted her head.

"So, did you confirm it?" She didn’t like waiting for answers, especially when her patience was already drained because of the pain she had just gone through.

"Yes!" The man in black quickly nodded, suddenly feeling the urge to kneel down. Maybe it was because she was annoyed, but the presence Michelle had made his blood freeze up.

Once again, he could see that she wasn’t just a little girl below the Spirit rank. She was already a force to be reckoned with, and she would only grow more dangerous in the future.

Maybe, just like his master, she, as a single person, would become a powerhouse.

Usually, powerhouses were whole sects or clans, but there were a few unusual powerhouses in the heavenly realm.

Two of them were the Black and White Gods.

Another two were David Elether and Alexander Terve.

And the last was the organization Alexander and David created.

The most unusual thing about the organization, Dark Palace, was that the master, the Dark Lord, put together some executives before disappearing. What no one knew was that the Dark Lord was the duo of Alexander and David.

Just by the reverence the executives held toward the Dark Lord duo, the organization became the most mysterious and one of the greatest in the whole realm. The mystery was so great that no one even knew how the executives communicated with each other or how they ruled over their subordinates.

But one thing was known to all: if the Dark Lord appeared, all the executives and subordinates would bow down to him.

The man in black was one of them. He was handpicked by Alexander before he and David left for the Land of Exile, to come inform him if the elders of one of the normal powerhouses started acting out again. He didn’t expect to then be tasked with protecting a little girl with the potential to shake heaven and earth.

"What did the soul look like?" Michelle continued asking.

"I don’t know, My Lady," the man shook his head. "I could only probe if it was there, not what it looked like."

Hearing that, Michelle’s eyes narrowed even further. "Then what do you know about it?"

The man thought back to what he sensed before speaking again: "Its surface is identical to the surface of your soul. If it hadn’t twitched, I would have thought it was a part of your soul that got torn away."

"What could that mean?" Michelle’s brows creased into a frown.

"It’s probably intelligent."

"Why do you say so?"

"It twitched right when I touched it, as if on purpose. Souls usually don’t twitch. It wanted to be noticed. Also, you said you felt your soul energy move within your body to form shapes like sign language."

With a frown, Michelle let her fingers curl by her side as she thought about everything. The presence of an intelligent soul changed the stakes.

From what the man in black had told her before, she knew she didn’t need to worry about being controlled or overpowered by the soul, but she still had doubts in her mind. The soul couldn’t directly harm her, but what if it harmed her indirectly?

Since it could partly control her soul energy, what if it interrupted her control of her soul energy when she needed it crucially? Then she would end up in deep shit.

"What does it want in my body?" she mumbled, but it was clearly a rhetorical question. She wasn’t expecting an answer.

And since the man in black didn’t know the answer, he remained silent.

Michelle’s eyes flicked to her own hands. Just moments ago, her soul energy had traced sign language within her body. But at the moment, she couldn’t feel anything. The soul had gone silent.

So Michelle decided to rest until it decided to contact her again. "Leave me for now!" she glanced at the man in black as she let her back fall on the bed.

The man just nodded and instantly disappeared. Only then did Michelle remember that she had never asked for his name.

But she didn’t have the time to think about it. Finally relaxing a bit, her face went even paler than it already was.

She vividly remembered the pain of her soul being probed, and she knew she would remember it for a long time. But she couldn’t let it get to her too much.

It was a horrible experience, but it was already over. Her rationale knew everything was fine already, but her instincts were still on high alert, and her body was thus tense.

Even with her forcing her mind to relax, it was like her brain remembered not being able to send out any signals, so it kept ordering her muscles to remain tense, always prepared to fight.

It took much longer for Michelle’s instincts to go down than for her to actually calm down. Only then could she finally rest calmly and fall into a light sleep.

But that sleep didn’t last long.

After just a short while, feeling broken and annoyed, Michelle woke up to her soul energy moving around her body without her orders. The foreign soul must have taken control of it again.

So Michelle closed her eyes and observed the movements. Just like before, it was moving around to create signs.

A few moments later, Michelle realized that it was three signs switching around over and over into a sentence: "Don’t evade me!"

"Evade?" Michelle frowned. She was trying to find out who the soul belonged to. She never thought about evading it.

"You want to get rid of me!" Another string of signs started showing repetitively.

That made Michelle’s frown deepen. She had never thought about what she would do once she found the soul. Because all that would depend on what kind of soul it was and what its intentions were.

Suddenly, Michelle felt like the soul was trying to manipulate her into giving in to it, making her narrow her eyes. She wasn’t a person just anyone or anything could manipulate. And anyone who tried but failed to do it had to pay the price.

And to make a foreign soul pay the price for trying to toy with her, Michelle had to find out how much it knew about her. "If I wanted to get rid of you, I would have already used my memory manipulation skill to wipe your existence!" That wasn’t true, but Michelle decided to lie to see if the soul could also tell it was a lie.

For a moment, the soul stopped controlling Michelle’s soul energy into forming signs, but then it started again. "Then what do you want from me?" It seemed like the soul gave in to Michelle instead of having Michelle give in to it.

But Michelle wouldn’t be fooled by something like that. She wouldn’t let a small soul control her. "Tell me about yourself!" Michelle gave the soul free rein so it could lie to her as it liked, so she could assess its intelligence. She was curious about the lie it could make up.

Very quickly, the soul energy within Michelle’s body started forming signs again, and soon, Michelle had read a whole story about the soul. It was a story cooked out of half-truths and half-lies, making it quite hard to see through.

But Michelle could. She herself was a master of deception, so the range of deception the soul showed was child’s play to her.

What the soul explained was quite a story. It claimed that it was a fragment of Michelle’s soul that had been missing from her since the day she was born because it got torn away from her.

For a long time, it had flown around the world until it found her, and then it entered her body along the void when Michelle pulled it back into her body after getting rid of the humidity in the basement.

What a pity, the soul didn’t have a clue about the fact that the soul that was in Michelle’s body when it was born was different from the soul that was there at the moment. Michelle was a reincarnator from the 21st century, while the original soul was already dead.

If the soul really had gotten separated from Michelle’s soul when she was born, then it wouldn’t have returned to her, but to somewhere where the original Michelle’s soul went—probably the afterlife. That was proof that the soul was just directly aiming at Michelle and her soul, not knowing anything about her past.
