Chapter 83: Dying

His heart became filled with warmth in an instant. Even without Spade saying anything, Arren could feel the emotions inside him and what the alpha was feeling at the moment. It gave him the impression that the connection between them was much deeper than he had always thought. However, that wouldn’t make sense either. Perhaps, they were truly compatible with each other, or Arren’s feelings for the alpha were creating this illusion.

No matter the case, what they felt for each other was real.

After a while, with Spade gradually becoming calmer, they had a normal conversation. The alpha did indeed look calm on the surface earlier, but Arren was aware that his emotions were not yet soothed, and only after a few minutes of being alone did Spade truly become calm.

"Do you really feel better now? Be honest." Spade demanded as he said it, without breaking eye contact with Arren.

He knew the alpha would persist even if they found the real reason for his condition. Spade was like that, and he would always continue to worry when it came to everything related to Arren.

Arren inwardly smiled and yet became powerless at the same time. He didn’t know where it started, or perhaps it began that night when Spade became even more protective of him. He was already protective enough before, but not to this extent.

However, deeper inside him, he was aware the alpha had some reservations just like Arren did, and he trusted that one day they could be honest with each other about these matters.

For now, Arren grasped Spade’s hand tightly, although it certainly wasn’t considered tight for the alpha because of his limited strength at the moment. It was Spade who tightened his hold with his hand while not breaking their eye contact.

Arren gave a reassuring smile to the alpha, wanting his worry to dissipate even for a little bit.

"I really feel fine now, really," he said firmly to show that he was honest with his words and not just comforting the alpha. Even his bright eyes confirmed what he said; although he truly did feel weak at the moment, the doctor already confirmed that after a few days of proper treatment, his strength would recover in no time.

The alpha had a staring contest with him for a moment, as if his mind had a conflicting emotion from within about whether to trust his words. Arren didn’t avert his gaze either and bravely met Spade’s gaze.

It was Spade who admitted defeat in the end. He sighed and nodded his head, grasping Arren’s hand tight but gently at the same time. And gradually a smile appeared on his lips as if the relieved sigh had come late and the realization that Arren was truly awake after a few days had finally hit him.

"It’s good that you’re okay... That’s good." Spade spoke in hushed tones, but the message was fully conveyed to Arren, loud and clear.

In fact, the alpha’s words were simple if looking at them in a literal way. However, it gave a deeper sensation once they had already reached Arren’s ears and gone straight through his heart.

It wasn’t like Spade’s words were simple; it was more like he had a lot of things to say but didn’t know how to say them exactly.

Arren weakly swallowed the lump that was beginning to form in his throat. He thought before that seeing his alpha worry about him from time to time was a proof of his love for him, so he was quite happy to see it. However, at the moment, rather than being happy, Arren was distressed about it. He didn’t want his alpha to become like this either.

"Yes, I’m fine now," Arren said while weakly burying himself in the other’s arms on his own initiative. It was now his safe haven, and Arren felt truly safe in these arms. And in turn, he wanted to make his alpha feel convinced that he was fine and awake in his arms. "So, you don’t have to worry anymore," Arren continued. Even if he knew that the alpha would still continue to worry about him after what he said, Arren wanted to say it.

The alpha’s sigh reached his ears, and in no time, he was enveloped in Spade’s embrace. Arren shut his eyes and immersed himself in the alpha’s tight and secure arm, and without his intention, he fell asleep.

Actually, that was reasonable since he was weak at the moment, and although he just woke up, Arren’s body couldn’t stay awake for too long at the moment until he fully recovered.

Spade laid Arren down on the mattress carefully before gently putting on a quilt for him. The omega’s condition seemed better now and only needed to be nurtured to health, and after a few days, it would seem as if nothing really happened.

However, what happened might disappear in appearance, but it happened nonetheless. And it would constantly haunt his dreams.

He sat in one of the hospital chairs, staring peacefully at the sleeping omega in the bed. Spade’s eyes barely blinked, as if afraid that if he did so, Arren would magically disappear into thin air.

To calm this emotion, Spade held Arren’s right hand and grasped it with both hands before gradually intertwining the fingers with his. He wanted to feel the warmth that emitted from Arren’s palm.

Spade silently maintained his position and watched Arren sleep with his dark amber eyes, fixing all his attention on the other. The silence enveloped the whole room, however, even with all that Spade’s emotions seemed to still have huge waves on them. The storm was barely over; it was still there, waiting for another wave.

After a few minutes, Spade brought Arren’s hand to his lips and silently kissed it as he firmly shut his eyes. He ignored all the terrifying thoughts that were about to consume him again.

However, no matter how he did it, the last image of the omega fainting in his arms couldn’t be erased. It was like deja vu that he knew he experienced that last time, but this time it was much clearer and longer than a second.

Spade knew that Arren only fainted in his arms and that what he was seeing was merely an illusion made by his mind or something else; however, they weren’t true at the moment. And yet, it was truly terrifying that he became cold in an instant. That night, Spade’s fear was amplified even more by the image he saw.

Arren was in his arms... dying.

No, he shook his head; that was an illusion. Spade opened his eyes and stared at the sleeping omega in the bed. He swallowed all the thoughts of waking up Arren to reassure himself that the omega was truly awake now.

Spade sighed and leaned in the seat while holding Arren’s hand; his gaze became fixed on the ceiling. This time, the exhaustion was fully displayed on his face.

They were all... dreams, as he convinced himself otherwise Spade would become insane in an instant. And no one in the world could calm him if that happened.
