Chapter 930: Chapter 207: Going North to Save Husband_5
Xining Guard was still standing, but Wa Ci did not enter through Xining; however, the military force of Xining Guard had been nearly wiped out since the critical passes had been conquered, and their cavalry headed straight for Jingshi Capital. Xining, a place known for deporting prisoners, thus became less important and was temporarily spared.
Pei Qin had inquired and just learned that Mo Heng had escaped from danger and had moved his troops to a new position.
"Damn! Didn’t they send him a message in between? I came all the way here, and he freaking left!?" Pei Qin couldn’t help but curse.
"Where else to go?" Lu Hai asked her.
Pei Qin glanced at her sideways, "Since we’re already here, where do you think?"
Ten days later, a batch of new soldiers arrived at the military camp where Mo Heng was located. The young men who had just entered the camp, though full of zeal, were just human shields under Wa Ci’s cavalry—donning armor and wielding long spears to join the battle required initial rigorous training. Mo Heng, just a Deputy General at the garrison, consequently had the task of training the new recruits.
Seeing the new recruits approaching, though their skin was dark, he recognized the person he had been dreaming of night and day—Mo Heng jolted and murmured softly, "Qinqin..." How did she get here!? Hadn’t he sent several letters telling her to take their daughter and hide first!? How did she end up in the new recruits?
Mo Heng’s mind was filled with questions, and he immediately wanted to grab her for questioning.
Yet, Pei Qin passed by him with a long spear, not recognizing him at all, and joined the queue with a shorter recruit.
Mo Heng’s hand reached out but he restrained himself. He must be missing her too much, seeing her face in everyone!
Feng Wei also wondered if he was seeing things? But seeing Liu Feng and Lu Hai also in the new recruits, he became unsettled. His lady, a woman, actually... actually ran to the military camp!?
Seeing Mo Heng’s reaction, he quickly called out to him in a low voice.
Mo Heng and he exchanged glances, then both looked over at Pei Qin again.
Jiang Zhen, seeing Mo Heng and Feng Wei both scrutinizing Pei Qin, felt curious. Deputy General Mo was usually aloof, viewing everyone with cold indifference. Now both were watching the new recruit; could there be something amiss? He also scrutinized Pei Qin. Hmm, this lad had delicate features though a bit dark. He called out to her, "You, what’s your name?"
Pei Qin, standing upright with military posture, loudly replied, "I am called Pei Erhei! Nickname, Blind Eye!"
Several muffled laughs erupted among the new recruits.
Jiang Zhen glared fiercely, instantly silencing them, then looked at Pei Qin, who maintained a solemn face, nodded his approval, and came over to ask Mo Heng. He also trained new recruits, but now, during these dire times, it was crucial to utilize personnel effectively. This Mo Heng, with a scholarly demeanor and astonishingly handsome, hardly seemed manlike—he wanted to see what special methods he might have.
"Deputy General Mo! Our men are fully assembled, shall we proceed with the usual training method, or do you have a different training technique in mind?"
Mo Heng took his eyes off Pei Qin, who had held his gaze intently. The moment she spoke out, he already knew it was her! She even picked for herself such a common name and a nickname, Blind Eye?
Feng Wei’s heart was in his throat knowing his lady had run off to the military camp. What about the two young ladies? Were they left with Zhang Gengshan? The battlefield was no place for her limited self-defense skills...
Mo Heng took a deep breath, "Let’s start with the standard training."
Jiang Zhen, hoping he would propose something unique, was disappointed to find out he really had no special method and internally cursed him a pretty boy. Training the new soldiers still depended on him. He stepped forward, raising his voice with motivational speech about serving the nation, then started from the basics.
Pei Qin, clad in light armor and holding a long spear, followed the actions of the person in front, repeating a thrusting motion back and forth.
Mo Heng watched her, his heart seemingly ablaze with boiling water, unable to contain his anxiety. How could she have ended up joining the army at the military camp!
It was the height of summer, and even in the north, the heat was unbearable.
In less than an hour, sweat drenched many.
Pei Qin ignored the sweat dripping down her face, her expression resolute as she repeatedly raised her long spear, thrust, swing, parry.
Half the recruits could no longer endure.
Jiang Zhen observed Mo Heng paying attention to Pei Qin and occasionally gave her extra glances. Upon closer inspection, he realized this dark-skinned lad was indeed good material! He called Pei Qin out and asked, discovering she was a practitioner, nodding his head in satisfaction.
Finally, at the mid-training break, Mo Heng declared he needed to supplement his personal soldiers from the new recruits.
Jiang Zhen immediately blocked, "Deputy General Mo, you already have too many personal soldiers! Actually, I’m short of two hands!" He directly pointed at Pei Qin, "This dark lad, you’ll follow me from now on!"
"Yes!" Pei Qin responded loudly.
Seeing Mo Heng’s handsome face darken, Jiang Zhen was puzzled, later asking Pei Qin if she recognized Mo Heng. Pei Qin straightforwardly said she didn’t know him; she was here to fight and repel Wa Ci!
"Good lad! You have spirit!" Jiang Zhen, pleased, patted her shoulder.
Mo Heng’s gaze shot daggers at his hand.
Jiang Zhen suddenly felt a chill down his spine, turned his head and saw nothing; maybe it was just a breeze on such a hot day. Then, he noticed that the Deputy General Mo, who was turning a dark face toward him, suddenly looked hostile. Was he holding a grudge because he wasn’t allowed to lead the training?
The afternoon training finally ended, and many new soldiers, unable to withstand it, collapsed on the ground to rest.
Pei Qin, newly promoted to Jiang Zhen’s personal soldier, along with Lu Hai, moved to join Jiang Zhen’s other personal soldiers.
Mo Heng, his lips tightly pressed, restrained and suppressed his feelings, watching Pei Qin as she crudely ate a bread roll and drank salty soup, struggling to suppress the turmoil within him.
Pei Qin couldn’t possibly not use the restroom, so after dinner and before the evening training, she and Lu Hai went out to find a place to relieve themselves.
No sooner had she found a somewhat secluded spot than Mo Heng dashed over and pulled her into his arms, "Qinqin..."
