Chapter 242: Chapter 242 Pei the Big Bun (6)_1
-----
People in Taiping Town were all puzzled. Old Scholar Fang could have taught his grandson himself, yet he sent the boy to the town’s school. That was not so unusual, but why did the young master from Landlord Chang’s house also go to a town school for his studies? Was Teacher Sun that excellent in scholarship? And had they been unaware of this before?
Even Teacher Sun doubted whether his scholarship had recently improved a lot.
However, since the young master from the Chang’s house was now living at Pei Qin’s place, it seemed clear that the Chang’s house had become a solid backing for Sister Peiqin and her brother. So, even if Old Pei’s House opened another silk and satin shop, could it possibly compare to the Chang’s house in Yuanyang County?
Landlord Zhao even made a point of sending over watermelons, honeydews, and other foods.
Feng Bo came over to deliver vegetables again. Knowing that Pei Qin and her family set up their stall at noon only on market days, he chose those times to make the delivery.
To his surprise, not only was his cousin’s family there, but even the young master from Chang’s house was living at their place.
"Cousin! You... why have you moved here too?" Feng Bo’s smile was somewhat forced.
Fang Liuming explained, "I’m studying at the town’s school, and cousin invited me over for meals."
Feng Bo nodded and scrutinized Pei Qin’s expression.
Pei Qin was picking through mung bean sprouts; she enjoyed stir-fried sprouts but disliked the roots. With a few wisps of hair falling around her ears and neck, her fair and clean skin, and her serious demeanor as she sat, it was hard for anyone to look away.
Feng Bo wasn’t an eleven or twelve-year-old unaware of the ways of the world; at fifteen, he understood what it meant to be married. He hadn’t seen Pei Qin strike anyone, and he found her not only beautiful but also straightforward and capable. His mother had said the same, and he felt attracted to her.
But now, Feng Bo glanced at Fang Liuming and then at Chang Yonglin and felt an even greater sense of crisis.
Pei Qin had originally planned to make braised noodles but with Feng Bo there, she’d have to roll a lot of noodles in this unbearably hot weather, and she wasn’t up for it. She simply made a pot of rice porridge and cooked three kinds of bing bread. She stir-fried two warm dishes, prepared three cold platters, all served in large portions, and covered a whole table with them.
Chang Yonglin was against the idea of sharing a table with Fang Liuming, let alone Feng Bo. The way that "cousin" looked at Pei Qin made him uncomfortable.
After the meal, Pei Qin, as usual, went to fetch water, and Fang Liuming also automatically took up a bucket to follow. He now woke up half an hour early every day to run three laps around Taiping Town. At first, it was exhausting and difficult, but now he could finish the three laps and had started to build some strength.
Upon seeing this, Feng Bo immediately intervened, taking the bucket from Pei Qin’s hands, "I’m here; there’s no need for you to do such heavy work like carrying water!"
In the two days since Chang Yonglin had arrived, the task of fetching water had fallen to the two guards. However, Pei Qin, accustomed to some activity after meals and using more water in the heat, had taken to treating fetching water as an exercise.
Once she filled up the tank, Pei Qin planned to head to the county town to deliver peanuts.
"I’m free today anyway; let me help you with the delivery! This way, you won’t have to hitch up the donkey cart either," said Feng Bo, eager to spend more time with Pei Qin and have a conversation. Otherwise, with cousin Liuming visiting every day, when would she remember his kindness? Besides, he had to talk about something today; he couldn’t delay any longer!
"There’s no need for cousin to get involved in the business matters of my family!" Pei Qian coldly made herself clear, not believing for a moment that he had good intentions.
Feng Bo was left speechless by her remark, "... I’m not trying to interfere; I just wanted to offer some help." He looked towards Pei Qin, hoping she wouldn’t misunderstand.
"Oh, no need! You should get back to your own business!" Pei Qin quickly hitched up the donkey cart.
Fang Liuming came over to help load the peanuts onto the cart.
Seeing her put on a straw hat and pick up a whip, ready to drive off in the donkey cart, Feng Bo hurried forward, "Cousin! Actually, I came over because I don’t quite understand some accounting problems and was hoping you could help me with them!"
