Chapter 76. Beauty like a goddess.
Chapter 76: 76. Beauty like a goddess.
Even before the sun rose fully in the sky, the ship had become busier than usual. Neriah could tell that it was because they were nearing Trago. Her heart raced from time to time and she enjoyed the busyness because it meant that they were truly nearing Trago.
At some point, she could not just sit back and do nothing. She was too excited to stay inside so she went out. She wanted to see as they drew closer and closer to their destination... To her freedom.
Time to time, she would glance over to the Avelian ships that escorted them, still wondering which one her lover was aboard. Also wondering if he was as excited as she was, if he was staring at the moving clouds, the smashing waves and the slowly dying sun. She wondered if he was also counting the seconds that remained before they would be together again. Oh how desperately she wished to hold him.
A loud cry, more like a chant came from up above and Neriah looked up and so did every other person on deck. She squinted her eyes to get a better look at the man who stood high up in the crow’s nest of the ship. Once again she let out a loud cry and everyone on the ship suddenly began to shout and jump, clapping and banging their hands on the ship.
They seemed excited. They seemed excited and she could not hear a single thing they were screaming. It was in their language. But her heart raced, it raced as she could think of only one thing that would cause this sort of uproar from them.
She saw Barak climb up to the crow’s nest next to the man and she saw his head turn around, he was searching for something on the ship. His search stopped when his gaze fell on her.
He seemed to have found what he was looking for. For some weird reason, she smiled. For all of her life, she could not explain why, but she had smiled as his eyes touched hers while he just stared at her with close to no expression on his face.
Unbeknownst to her, Barak could not help the uneasy feeling in his heart. He was supposed to be happy but he just couldn’t be. Her smile toward him as he stared down at her from up above made him even more wary of her. Because whenever she was this silent, even showed happiness or such a smile, it meant she was planning something. And this was what made him uneasy.
What could she have been planning when she was this far away from home?
"We are almost there." Neriah heard an annoying tiny voice sound behind her. She refused to turn around and even give the little creature a response.
"Your Highness, are you mad at Riri? You know Riri loves you more than she loves the prince." Riri continued, flying closer to Neriah’s shoulder.
"What was that? I think I hear a big mosquito flying around." Neriah scoffed without sparing her a glance.
"Mosquito! My Lady you would compare Riri to such disgusting creatures. I do not like the taste of blood." She shook her head disgusted at the comparison.
"My dear princess, the only star that shines brighter than the sun." Riri began singing praises and it didn’t take too long for it to work on Neriah.
"The princess, strong and beautiful, the one who is stronger than all the knights in the palace. The best archer of Avelah. The only princess who has grace and beauty like the goddess herself." Yes, that last one did it.
Neriah scoffed and cleared her throat aloud, "I do have the blessed beauty of a goddess, do I not?" She turned her head slightly to the side and stared at Riri and the fairy smiled and flew in front of her face.
"Of course. Prince Barak does not deserve a goddess like yourself. You are the embodiment of divinity." Riri said and Neriah flushed and placed a hand over her mouth to conceal her laughter.
"I thought you said your prince is the most handsome in the world. You have been going around with him like you belong to him."
"What!! No, of course not. I just said that to make him feel better about himself. He is not fine at all. The only shining star I see on this whole ship is you, My lovely princess." Riri quickly said, using her hand to stroke Neriah’s hair.
Neriah smiled and thought to herself that she wouldn’t have to leave Riri behind if she escaped with Lyle. She’d not leave her fairy with Barak.
...
"There it is. Your new home, our home, Trago." He snuck up behind her and whispered into her ear and she jolted at the sudden intrusion of personal space and almost fell but he held her steady.
"Do not sneak up on people. That is rude." She simply said to his face before turning around again, not minding his arms that remained around her waist. Or maybe she was so used to them that she just did not realize they were around her waist.
"I am aiding your hate for me so it is only right that I keep being rude." He replied and she said nothing further. She just watched silently.
"What do you think? Like it already?" He asked and she scoffed.
"All I can see is a huge, unreasonable wall." She pointed.
"The Trago nation is surrounded by a huge wall. It is for protection, so there is no easy way of entering without thorough check ups. It also keeps out war invaders." He calmly explained.
"Look, over there." He pointed with one hand, pulling her closer to his body with the other as he lowered his frame so his head was at the same level with hers.
He was pointing at something but all Neriah could see was something pointy, like a cross maybe. "That is the palace. It is set on a high hill." He explained.
