Chapter 234: 234. You win.

234. You win

"But how do I make him understand that I have never lain with anyone but him? How do I make him believe that the child is his and his alone?"

"Neriah my child, it’s alright. We’re on your side." Rakavi says while hugging her to her bosom.

At this point, Rug signals Botch and Mileka and pulls the two of them out of the room, cottage, leaving the family alone.

"How—" She choked as she held on tightly to Rakavi, "How do I make him see that I understand that he must believe many things have happened between me and Lyle and I am ashamed of myself too but in truth, nothing really happened between us."

After everything that had happened was he really supposed to just believe her? Barak wondered.

But then again, all he wanted to do was soothe her tears.

"Except a woman could get pregnant by holding hands with a man, or kissing a man, I— I know how filthy I sound now but it is the truth. I have never gone beyond that. Please mother, father, help me make him see that my child is his."

Neriah takes Rakavi’s hand and presses it upon her bulging stomach.

She knew standing before her in-laws, it was not wise to say things like she had kissed another man while being married to her husband but it was really the truth. She just did not know how else to tell it to them.

They believe her words so why won’t Barak believe her?

"I hate the way he looks at our child with such disgust. It hurts me in ways I didn’t even know I could be hurt. I just want my husband back, why is it so hard?"

Those words more than anything touched the deepest parts of Barak. Her saying all she wanted was him made him want to surrender to her.

Lies or truth...

He was tired of it all.

Indeed all he also wanted was his wife back.

Since the moment their eyes met that first night, that’s all he’s ever wanted. That’s why even after finding out she had lied to him, even after finding out she had planned to take his head back then, he insisted on having her as his wife.

Because no matter what she did, no matter how many lies she told, no matter how much truth was disguised as lies, all he wanted, lies and all, was Neriah.

The red-headed witch that had enchanted him at first sight.

And even now, her words were making him realize that that want has never changed. Not even once.

His desire to hold her was still burning as hot as it did on their first night. His desire to own and possess all of her did not fade either.

"I just want him to love me like he used to and whisper sweet nothings to me, why has that become so hard? I know it is my fault and I accept my fault, so please won’t you help me beg Barak."

"Child, you will hurt yourself with all this crying." Bashan says while patting her shoulder.

"Please make him understand that I love him more than my own life. He means everything to me and I just want him back, nothing more. Why won’t he forgive me? Why does he keep saying he hates me? Why won’t he love me like he used to? That is all I ask, all I—"

No more words could escape her throat. The sobs choked her and she just gave in to the loud sobs, there was no point holding them back any longer. She could not fight it. Crying made her stomach hurt but she couldn’t stop it even though she desperately wanted to.

"I just want him to know I’m sorry."

He couldn’t help it...

Then and now, the night he first met her and until this point, he could not stand her tears.

He could not stand that trembling in her voice.

His eyes were closed but he could picture her entire body shuddering. He hated this woman, but dear gods he knew that was the greatest lie he had ever told. For he loved her more than he could care to imagine.

Without much thought in his head, and clouded by the urge to comfort her, Barak’s hand moved and it found her feet and his palm wrapped around it.

She flinched, causing Rakavi to break the hug and as Neriah stared down at her feet, Rakavi and Bashan’s eyes followed her gaze.

Silently, he held her, with his eyes still closed as though he was rendering a silent prayer that wasn’t to be disturbed for any reason at all. And in the moment of that sacred prayer, it was just the two of them in a sacred world that he had built the moment he held her feet.

He wanted to let it go.

He couldn’t be stubborn any longer.

Telling her he hated her, running away from her after he kissed her, saying harsh words to her were only his way of trying to remain stubborn. His own way of fighting himself, of stopping himself from expressing his love for her like a fool again.

But at this point, he couldn’t fight it anymore. He was tired of fighting.

Slowly his lashes lifted to reveal golden eyes that were instantly fixated on her. He scanned her face, red and wet with tears, yet still beautiful, his eyes slips down to her big stomach in front of her and then back to her face and a soft chuckle leaves his lips as she sniffles and just stares down at him with those pitiful green eyes.

How could he ever continue to hate her? He never stood a chance against this woman in the first place. She’d bewitched him long ago and he was yet to break free from it.

He knew he was never going to break free from it. He looks up at her and smiles softly before he breathes the words in tragonian...

""Alright. I give up. You win... As always.""
