The Dragon Prince's Bride -
Chapter 226. Damn you.
Chapter 226: 226. Damn you.
"Barak please believe me, I—"
"How laughable I must have looked going on my knees before you, burying my head between your legs, singing praises of your beauty like a lovestruck child, spending time with you, telling you how much I didn’t want to be away from you." He laughs again,
"Oh how you must have laughed every time I called your name and expressed my need for you, my burning desire to have you. How you must have laughed with your lover because you knew you had me just where you wanted me."
She didn’t want to keep hearing the harsh words he was saying. She knew he was hurt, and she could tell how badly she had hurt him and she knew she had no right to be hurt by the words he was saying but...
It hurt.
Every word that proceeded from his mouth was like a knife straight to her heart and it hurt her. She tried to wriggle out of his hold but she couldn’t.
"Barak, no. No, I swear it was nothing like that." She said but he wasn’t listening.
"You had me just where you wanted me. Right in the palm of your hands. Dancing, walking, eating, drinking, dammit! doing every damned thing right at the center of your palm!!" Neriah flinched and shut her eyes as he yelled, shook her and tightened his grip on her arm.
Tears streaming down her tightly shut eyes, she bit down on her trembling lips to try and hold back some tears.
"I guess I was the foolish one. What was I expecting? What was I expecting from a woman who lied from day one of our encounter? How foolish of me to believe you had changed. How foolish of me to believe that—" He held his lips between his teeth for a moment before speaking again, "that you, if not love at least you loathed me less."
Neriah’s eyes opened at that moment and for a second she could see nothing but the pain of betrayal there. No anger, no malice, just pure pain...
"I do." She confessed in one breath. "Barak, I do love you." for a moment his hold on her loosened. "And I accept that all that happened to you is my fault, but I swear I did not try to kill you. I swear it. I’m not lying. I know I always lied, so it is hard for you to believe me right now, but I swear... I am not lying."
It was so easy to confess her love for him now... More than ever, Neriah regretted not giving him this answer directly back then. She regretted pushing it to the next day. If only she had confessed everything right there and then when he had professed his love for her, they probably wouldn’t be in this situation.
For a little while, Barak’s head and heart wanted to fall for what he believed were lies. He desperately wanted to believe her. More than anything he wanted to wipe the tears off her face and kiss her passionately. Dear gods, indeed he had married a wicked witch.
One that even after betrayal, even though he was certain all she was saying was nothing but lies, he could not entirely erase his love and yearning for her. He hated her for this.
But mostly, he loathed himself more for feeling this way.
All he’d ever wanted was for her to love him. Even if it was half the love he had for her. He just wanted a little of her love. And now, after all that had happened, she was pulling that card as a last resort. She was telling him she loved him.
He hated the woman so much.
"I am deeply repulsed just by staring at you." He suddenly says, finally releasing her from his hold. "You disgust me. I have never hated a person as much as I hate you." And he said those words with all sincerity. Yet all he really wanted to do at that very moment was kiss her.
He wanted so desperately to kiss her that it was driving him mad. How could a tiny being like her do so much to him? How could she torment him so? How was she capable of destroying his entire world and yet still make him want her with a vehement passion and possessiveness that was threatening to destroy him all over again?
How and why was she doing this to him?
"Damn you woman!" Neriah jolted as he yelled and raised his hands as though he wanted to grab her again, but he held himself back.
"Damn you." This time the words were lower, calmer... And he stared at her, and she was shaking. Trembling vehemently before him.
’Damn you, Spitfire.’ He said inside his head before pulling her into his arms again and he gave in.
Gave in to that desperate desire that was eating him from the inside. He gave in to that yearning that had never died. He gave in to that foolish part of him that was overjoyed to see her. And he kissed her.
And much rapidly was her response and if he wasn’t of the notion that she was the very same woman who betrayed him, who stabbed him in the heart, he’d say she missed him... Maybe even more than he missed her.
For her kiss was sweet as always... yet sweeter than ever. He tasted the tears that had fallen on her lips and found that it was warm and his palm snaked around her neck naturally like he always did to help her wedge her head so as not to hurt her neck.
And he kissed her.
And he loved her all over again...
And he hated her even more because he loved her.
"The taste," He mutters over her lips as he breaks the kiss and her lashes slowly lift up to reveal eyes that till date remained the most enchanting he had ever seen, "is gone from your lips." He said while trying to maintain a stoic expression.
