Chapter 225. How foolish.
Chapter 225: 225. How foolish.
"Barak, it was not me." She took in a deep breath as she let it out, she moved her feet too. "I swear to you," She took more steps forward, "I swear by the goddess, I swear by my life... it was not me." She confessed.
She was standing right in front of him now, her head tilted backwards as she looked up at him.
For a single second, he had forgotten what she had done to him, forgotten what she was capable of doing. He had forgotten all the lies, all he saw was the lovely elf he had fallen for on that fateful night and her small lips opening and closing. He could hear the words she was saying, but in that little second, he wasn’t thinking about them, so he mindlessly asked, "Then who was it?"
Neriah’s eyes dilated as he asked the question. She didn’t think he would believe her so easily, but it seemed the goddess was really on her side. It seemed he was ready to listen to her after all.
"It was Lyle." She said and it seemed as though the mention of that single name from her small lips had snapped him back to reality. A wicked cold washed up his spine accompanied by a sudden increase in hate for the woman in front of him.
"I swear to you. It was him." Neriah didn’t want to cry, but as she began to explain, tears began to flow. But to Barak, seeing those tears only made his anger rise. She had deceived him countless times with those very same tears.
"Before we left for Fortia, I had gone to him, and I am sorry." She had deceived him a million times with this same trembling voice and like a fool he had believed her all those times.
"I know I had been an unfaithful wife but by then I had come to want you more than I thought I ever could, so I went to see him. I told him I would no longer meet with him and that I wanted to be with you but he couldn’t accept that, so he followed us to Fortia."
He knew she had met her lover before they left for Fortia together, but he didn’t know what their meeting had been about. But one thing was certain to him... Everything she was saying to him at the moment was a lie.
"And I didn’t know that. He came to me while I was awaiting your arrival in the garden of purple dahlias and he brought this strange woman with him. She looked just like me, she looked exactly like me." She desperately explained.
In his head, Barak kept telling himself not to believe her. Not to fall for her tricks. ’You know what kind of woman she is, do not fall for her lies.’ He kept telling himself these things over and over again and yet something inside him was starting to wonder, ’What if she’s not lying?’
"And he was going to use her to get to you. I tried to fight him. I swear I tried so hard to fight and get away from there." Dear gods! But her tears seemed so real.
Well, has there ever been a time where her tears looked fake? She was a queen at this and he knew it still he found himself trying to find the sincerity in her.
"I fought and fought but there were too many of them. Eventually they captured me, knocked me out, and by the time I awoke, it was already too late. They had stabbed you, I tried to help but I was useless, I could do nothing but watch you die b_before my eyes."
Damn she was good. The look in her eyes as she said the last part was a winner. It showed longing, pain, suffering and heartbreak all at once. It was so real. So real that he found it funny because if he didn’t know her better, he would have believed her.
And it hurt him.
It hurt him to know that she still had the audacity to tell such beautiful and convenient lies straight to his face even after what she had done.
Neriah tried to wipe her tears and await a response from him. She prayed and hoped in her heart that he would believe her. However...
A boisterous laughter filled the room. The laughter was so loud and hard that Neriah almost thought the man before her had gone mad. He laughed so hard that Neriah could see a teardrop escape his eye and trail down his cheek.
"Haaha," He slowly quelled his laughter, wiping the tears with his thumb. "Ah, dear Narcissus, you are just as I remember." He shakes his head in disgust, and Neriah watches as his eyes grow darker than they already are.
She flinched as his hands suddenly grabbed her arms, squeezing them with his big strong palms as he brought his head lower to her level. "A wicked, lying, cunning, scheming, adulterous witch." The pain and anger was evident in his eyes. He did not believe her. Not a word.
"Oh how foolish of a man I must have seemed in your eyes, for you to be able to cook up such a convenient lie and have the audacity to tell it to my face." Neriah shook her head with tears in her eyes as he spoke in that harsh tone. "Do you really see me as such a foolish man?" He said and squeezed her arm even tighter causing her to cry out in pain.
"Well I do not blame you. You have no fault at all. The fault is all mine. Indeed, I had acted very foolishly before you countless times. To confess my love for you when you were planning to send me to the gods the very next day." He scoffs and chuckles. "At that time, in your eyes, I bet I seemed more foolish than ever."
