The Dragon Prince's Bride
Chapter 192. The Dragon heart.

Chapter 192: 192. The Dragon heart.

"How are you still fighting so hard?" Lyle asked in a mocking tone as Barak continued fighting off the men who attacked him. At some point he had snatched the sword of one of the men who fought him after breaking the neck of the man with his bare hands.

"You have a knife in your chest, you have been hit by black head arrows and you have cuts all over your body." Lyle pointed out as he stared at him.

"You are losing so much blood and still you fight for your life." He laughed and jumped like a child as he watched Barak fight desperately for his life.

"Well I must say, you are as I have heard. Your reputation was not built on clouds. You are really a fierce warrior." It was a compliment... A mocking one that Barak could not dwell on at the moment.

He had to fight... He had to fight with all he had and he had to make it out of here alive. Only then could he come back for her and by the gods he would give her a slow and painful death. He would make her pay for betraying him.

"Do you not see it? You will die eventually. You have a knife in your heart and I do not know how you are even still moving around, but eventually you will die."

"I prepared so long for this day, do you think you can get away? The more men you fight off the more men you shall face."

Indeed, bodies laid on the ground. Bodies upon bodies.

How many? Maybe twenty, maybe more. How many were still standing? Maybe thirty, or perhaps more. The more he cut down men the more they became. It seemed as though killing them was causing them to multiply.

He was in pain, his breathing was uneven, his sanity was slipping from him, he was slowly losing consciousness and he knew he wasn’t going to last long. He was bound to pass out soon.

"So why not save us all the trouble and do yourself a favor by dropping dead already." Lyle said with his malicious green eyes staring at Barak.

Lyle knew for a fact that he did not have to continue the facade of him and Neriah being in this together. However, for some reasons known to him alone, he still wanted to do it. He wanted Barak to die with that feeling of betrayal in his heart. The feeling that someone whom he trusted with his everything had stabbed him right in the heart, Lyle wanted Barak to die like that.

There really was no need to keep lying to a man who was about to die. He could actually come clean about the matter and tell him that his wife, the real one, was drugged, knocked out and locked up in one of the rooms at the inn and that the one who had stabbed him was a fake, whose appearance was gotten by a trick of simple black magic.

He could... But he did not want to.

He enjoyed the look on Barak’s face as he stared at the woman he believed was his wife with so much pain. He enjoyed that look of hate in his eyes. He too had once had that look in his eyes toward someone. Someone who had betrayed him.

However, unlike him who was slowly getting his revenge for that someone’s betrayal, Barak was never going to get his revenge. He would die never knowing the truth. He would die with this thick pain in his heart.

Lyle thought to himself that it would have been better if that person had granted him the mercy of killing him just like he was going to kill Barak here tonight. If he had died a long time ago, he would never have grown up to be the sort of messed up man that he was today.

All he was today was due to that person. His entire life had always revolved around that person even though he had never wanted it to be so. He had never chosen that person. They had chosen him and yet they had betrayed him and set him on a life of pain and endless sorrow.

His revenge was just beginning...

Barak on the other hand could tell that this fight was going to be endless, they planned to kill him but he didn’t want to die yet... At least not until he got a chance to pay her back.

With heavy uneven breaths, he looked around him. He trembled as cold sipped through his body. The poison from the black arrows that had pierced him were quickly circulating around his body and they were starting to numb him.

He had to think of a way out of here or else death was inevitable.

Again and again, he shook his head, trying to stabilize his dizzy eyes but the gesture only worsened the situation. He looked around him, trying to think of or remember anything that could help me get away from those people. It was dark and that would not have been a problem since he could see in the dark but the pain he was feeling was too immense to focus on anything.

He could turn to his dragon form and burn them all to the ground, but that was a risky choice to make. He could end up destroying not only the people who were attacking him, but he could also go on a rampage like a brainless beast and destroy more innocent people outside the inn.

Lyle was wondering why he was still able to fight even though they had stabbed him in his heart, Barak knew the answer to that. It wasn’t because he was a fearsome warrior or because he was strong. It was solely because he was a dragon.

It was a secret among dragon bloods. A secret that even children of dragon bloods did not know for fear of the secret being leaked to the enemies. It was a secret he was going to share with her had she confessed her love to him.

All dragon bloods had two hearts. The Dragon heart and the human heart... The Dragon heart encircled the human heart. The Dragon heart served as a shield for the human heart. What she had pierced with her knife was the dragon heart.

The dagger had not been long enough to reach his human heart. He knew that was the reason he was still breathing. His human heart was not yet damaged, so he was weakened, greatly so. But he still had time.

However, a damaged dragon heart meant a damaged dragon and a damaged dragon was as good as a useless dragon. This was because the dragon heart was basically the source of the Dragon’s powers. The Dragon heart was like a source and storage of those powers.

And when there was a crack in the heart, it meant that those powers were sipping out of the crack and running through every part of his body, making him unstable and his powers uncontrollable.

If he even tried to use his powers that were connected to his dragon side, like his fire powers, he could end up losing control and destroying more than what he wanted to destroy. He could even lead to his heart imploding in the process.

Although, looking at that woman, he wouldn’t mind exploding and killing her with him after what she did to him.

But he could not do that. He could not risk the lives of other innocent people. Although no one seemed to be inside the inn, he could not begin to number how many were outside it. He could not risk their lives to save his own.

He stared at her again as he blocked the attack from one man, he wondered to himself. If he had told her about the hearts of the dragons, what would she have done? Used a longer dagger? Probably... He laughed at himself. His heart ached. Not because of the dagger that was still in it, but because of the betrayal. It really hurt.

It hurt because just this morning he had whispered to her that before they left Fortia, he would take her riding on his back. That he would carry her to the top of the walls of Trago and show her the vast sea from that height. Based on the geographic location of Fortia, it had the most beautiful view of the sea and—

Ah! He suddenly hit him! This inn, it was close to the walls! If he could just try a little to control his powers, he could use his wings alone and escape them. All he needed was time to heal.

The Dragon heart, if he had time, it would heal eventually... All he had to do was escape first. The crack in his heart would eventually close and he would be fine, then he could return for her. Then... he would not spare her.
