Chapter 166: 166. No longer want Lyle.
Her sleep was much sweeter than she could have asked for. Even though it was cut short, it was still sweet. And the morning that her sleep brought was also a pleasant one. He was by her side, their bodies were entwined and he held her very close. He wasn’t angry, he was just peacefully sleeping beside her.
Gently, Neriah turned her body, not wanting to wake him up with her movements, she pressed her elbows onto the bed and rested her chin on her knuckles, while facing him. She wanted to stare at his face while he slept.
His eyes, his nose, his ears, his lips... indeed, if their child were to resemble him, then he or she would be one beautiful baby. Very beautiful baby, Neriah smiled at the thought.
Since his anger had disappeared, she planned on telling him about her pregnancy when he woke up. "What would be your reaction?" She whispered to herself. Would he be extremely shocked like she was? Would he probably jump for joy? Would he pick her up and hug her vehemently? What would be his reaction? She wanted to know.
And she couldn’t wait to tell him... that he was soon to become a father. ’We will get married, live together and have babies that look like me and you.’ All of a sudden, old words flooded into her head. Words that she had spoken with Lyle. Her Lyle... The one whom she was supposed to be in love with.
But no longer was.
"Ah," She breathed as she suddenly realized that obvious fact... She no longer loved Lyle. At least not with the same vehemence that gripped her to the point where she slept with an unknown man to free herself from a marriage that was not with her so-called beloved.
Her eyes fell on the sleeping face of the man whom she was married to, and one of her hands moved from underneath her chin, snaking around her belly. How and when did things become so twisted?
She could have never imagined getting pregnant with the child of this man. She would have loathed the idea had she ever thought about carrying the baby of a dark-skinned barbarian. A baby that would not be a complete elf. It would have been a very troubling thought, one that most definitely would have irritated her.
However, it wasn’t so bad. No... ItIt wasn’t bad at all. Everytime she thought about the fact that she was pregnant with this man’s child, it made her heart flutter and her entire body just had some sort of sweetness inside.
Her future, she had always pictured with Lyle. She and Lyle would be together and indeed they would have a baby... Babies. She could never bring herself to picture a future with the barbarian. Such a picture only brought tears to her eyes as it always depicted her in suffering, and in pain, being tortured for eternity by her barbaric husband.
But now, the future she saw was more beautiful than anything she had ever painted. And in that new future, there was only one man beside her, carrying two of their children in both his arms, while she carried one and they strolled inside the palace.
Only one man in the picture and it was a very clear one, it was not blurred or disfigured in any manner. It was Barak. She could see no one else. And Neriah knew, her love for Lyle had somehow disappeared, and what she felt for Barak probably wasn’t love, but now... If she were to choose who her future would be with, she would go with the soon-to-be father.
Because although it probably wasn’t love, she had never enjoyed anyone’s company the way she enjoyed her husband’s. And although he was still a dragon blood, she didn’t find him dirty or beneath her feet like she used to. In fact she now knew he was the purest of princes and the dragon race was one of the noblest bloods. She did not want to admit it, but there was no point denying it.
She had been completely wrong about Tragonians.
’Forgive me Lyle.’ She thought to herself. She knew she was the reason Lyle was in Trago. She was the reason he had journeyed across waters, endangering his life. She knew that and she would be forever grateful for his sincere love for her, but she could not do it anymore.
Run away with him... She could not imagine it. Worse, she could not imagine taking the life of the man who lay so peacefully beside her. Just not talking to him for a day, she realized, was a hard thing to do. To send him to the gods at such an early age would mean madness for her. She would lose her mind.
And most importantly, it was foolish to run away with another man, while baring another man’s child. Barak would make a wonderful father. Of course he would be harsh and scold the child like he always scolded her, but he would forgive and hug the child like he always did with her too.
It was clear what she had to do. Nothing had ever been clearer to her. She had to send Lyle away, for his and her sake. And for the sake of her child. Ever since that incident where he tried to force himself on her, she had not spoken nor heard from him. But Neriah knew it was time to contact him again. And by the goddess it would be the last time. Just one last visit, to tell him to let her go.
She no longer wanted to escape her life as the wife of crown prince Barak. In fact she liked her life just the way it was unfolding. She never thought she would, but she did. And she wasn’t ready to change the way she lived this life.
She would meet him and explain to him. He was a reasonable man. Although the last time they met, he wasn’t so reasonable, Lyle had always been a calm and reasonable man. He would understand her desire to keep her life just the way it was.
