The Dragon Prince's Bride -
Chapter 158.
Chapter 158: 158.
Who would have known that Barak would hold his wife so dear?
What Raknar had been seeing since he returned could in no way classify as hate. Not from his brother, and based on the look of longing in her eyes that night he had arrived, it was evident that the feeling was mutual. Albeit she was still stubborn and impulsive, she did not hate her husband... but the only thing was that he wasn’t certain she knew that herself.
In fact, Raknar wasn’t certain either of them considered that the other could actually sincerely care for one another.
The door to the room suddenly opened and everyone gathered around it, but Barak remained in place holding his breath and Raknar stood beside him. The physician stepped out and, ""Your Majesty, please your assistance is needed."" Said the elderly woman who looked to be over 700 years old with a head full of long gray hair that was styled in a comfortable low bun.
""M_Me?"" Rakavi asked as the woman stared and called her.
""Aye.""
""Just me, not Barak?"" She asked again, switching glances between Barak and the physician while already leaving her husband’s side and heading toward the door.
""Aye, just you."" The woman nodded as Rakavi reached the door and delayed no further, she entered without any questions and the door was closed again.
""Why did they call only mother? Why wasn’t brother called too?"" Raki muttered to his other half with a worried expression on his face.
""I do not know. M_mother is stronger than brother. M_maybe they just need her help with something that brother is incapable of doing."" Raku stuttered the only reason he could think of.
""Ah, I see. Th_that is true. Mother is stronger than brother. But father is stronger than mother, wouldn’t they have called father instead?"" Raki asked again and his questions were just based on the fear he was feeling. One way or another, they had gotten close to her. Playing their little tricks on her was fun too and neither of them wanted to lose her.
""Uhm, well, maybe it is something only a woman can do. You know women’s stuff is always different."" Raku reasoned again and nodded to himself as though he was trying to reassure himself of his own words.
""She is going to be fine, right?"" Barni suddenly spoke up. And all eyes lifted and turned to the little man who had spoken. At that moment, it seemed all their eyes were connected, they all shared a worried gaze.
""Of course."" Rakima suddenly said, breaking the silence of worry that loomed around them. ""She is a person who had the audacity to slap me. Someone like that will not be held down by this little thing."" Rakima said, ruffling little Barni’s hair.
"So, Aria, right?" She turned to Aria. "Stop wasting your tears and go prepare fresh clothes for your mistress." Aria stared at her with confused eyes. "Now. On your feet, go!" Rakima ordered and Aria nodded and staggered to her feet.
""Raku, Raki, Barni, and Riri, the four of you can go pick flowers for her. This gloomy atmosphere would even hinder her healing.""
""Y_yes!"" All four of them nodded.
""And brother, please, your wife is just unconscious. She is not dead. Stop looking like a young heartbroken widower and just think of various ways to punish her when she awakens.""
She was going to be fine. She was the stubborn and troublesome Princess Neriah after all.
...
Around the time when they should have been heading out for their tryst that he had planned, the physician and priest finally stepped out and relayed the news to them. "" She is going to be fine. She should be awake by morning. Thankfully, the evil of the essence did not reach inside her. She shouldn’t have passed out, but it would seem she was deeply shocked. I advice that Your Highness remains by her side through the night, she needs your firecore. Holding her while she sleeps will do.""
With those words, everyone could finally breathe with ease. Aria kept raining praises on the goddess, thanking her for not taking the princess. Barni had already fallen asleep and been carried to his room by Raknar. The twins instantly wanted to go see Neriah but we’re chased away to return in the morning.
Bashan patted his son on the shoulder, ""She really is something."" He said as his wife also stepped out of thee room.
""You can go in now."" Rakavi said with a warm smile. "" She is fine, Barak."" His mother reassured him. "" She merely sleeps.""
Barak nodded to his mother’s words. "" Alright, we shall leave you."" Rakima said. "" I will return in the morning."" She said, signaling her parents that it was time they moved.
Theu all turned and walked away, leaving Barak out there in the cold dark night. "" Oh, and Barak,"" His mother suddenly halted, he turned and stared at her. "" Be gentle with her. Do not be too angry."" She smiled again and this time she really walked away with her husband and daughter.
For long heavy minutes, Barak stood in front of the door, just staring at it. She could have died. He couldn’t get that thought out of his head. She really could have died today.
He sighed deeply and pushed the door open. With slow heavy steps, he walked closer and closer to her, till her pale form was clear before him. She looked so pale. A little bit better than she was when he had found her, but still pale.
And oh so quiet. Apart from the rising and fall of her chest to indicate her easy breathing, Neriah looked like a beautiful corpse.
His fingers reached for her, then retracted. But then he reached for her again and this time he touched her cheek, stroking her gently as though he was scared to put much pressure less he marred her skin. "You never listen." He muttered with an aching heart. "Now look at you."
