The Dragon Prince's Bride -
Chapter 140. He’s harmless.
Chapter 140: 140. He’s harmless.
Shortly after the prince arrived, the King and queen entered together in matching shades of blue. And although the event was solely made for the king who was adding another year to his age, the focus of the night was on him... the returned prince.
Music played, the king and queen were the first on the dance floor
After them, every other person could take over.
But even as they danced, whispers had shifted to topics about him and him alone. Neriah watched as he smiled brightly while interacting with everyone. Even his parents were surprised that he had returned. Unlike the twins and Barni, his parents maintained their composure even though Neriah could clearly see the excitement in their eyes to have their son home.
"Pay him no mind. He has always been an event stealer." Rakima suddenly walked up behind her and whispered. At that moment, the prince turned around and looked at her. Now he was walking up to her. He was a fine man, with that broad smile on his face which made Neriah wonder why he was so happy. But he was still a fine man.
"" Hello, again."" He greeted yet again and even though he was such a fine prince, Neriah was annoyed by his presence because he was not her prince. He was not the prince she was expecting. He was the second born child she had never heard of. Annoying indeed.
She had raised her hopes for nothing. She nodded to him as a response to his greeting. "" Everyone is on the dance floor, why is the elven princess whose tales has crossed every part of the sea, standing here all alone?"" He was saying and Neriah could care less what he was ranting on about. She did not know how to explain this prince.
He was like all his brother’s put in one. He had the tall build and body of Barak, even his voice resembled Barak’s, but then he also spoke and walked like Barni, like a grown up version of the young prince. With that same tone that indicated he was wise beyond his years and vast in knowledge, along with a stride full of pride. Exactly like Barni. While at the very same time having the same mischievous glint in his eyes like the twins.
He was all his four brothers in one.
More importantly, Neriah could not still believe that Rakavi had birthed yet another grown son! The woman was a deity, really. To look like that even after giving birth to six children was an amazing feat no matter how much she thought about it.
""Oh, I know not whether you speak tragish."" He suddenly said and Neriah still was in no mood to speak to him. He wasn’t the problem... The only problem was that he had suddenly showed up and lifted her hopes only for her to turn around and find someone who wasn’t her dear husband, but his lookalike. It was not that she did not want to talk to him, it was just that she was pissed for some reason.
"I guess you do not understand me." He switched to her language and all he got as a response was the raise of her lashes followed by a non-chanlant gaze and in the next second her eyes followed the servant that served wine. She took a goblet and began twirling it in her hand.
"You must have heard, but allow me to introduce myself properly. I am prince Raknar Der Drache, son of Rakavi and Bashan Der Drache and of course the brother of your husband, Barak Der Drache."
Of course she knew his name. They had not stopped whispering it since he walked in. She could still remember the look on the King’s face when he walked in to find the prince who according to what Neriah had been hearing had been away for about a year and a half.
And it was then Neriah realized that the king had not been mistaken earlier in the day when he said ’his sons’. One of them was back, and the surprise and joy on the King’s face was not hidden. While Rakavi did not have the slightest look of surprise on her face, she did look happy that he was there. It seemed as though she had expected him and was glad he met her expectations.
At some point, the man of the hour had changed from the king to his prodigal son. He was surrounded and welcomed by all. All except Neriah who wasn’t interested in his return at all.
That was probably why he left the ladies that were drooling around him and came to her side.
Now he was expecting a response and at this point, Neriah felt it would be outright rude to not give him a proper response.
She sighed deeply and faced him, "It is nice to meet you, Your Highness." She lied without even giving the simplest of a head bow. "As you already know who I am, I do not see reason to tell it to you again." She sighed yet again and turned her attention to the dancing lot.
"True. But can I inquire as to why you are here away from the dance floor. Even the king and queen are having a blast over there." He pointed out and Neriah could not understand how or why he was choosing to continue this conversation. If she could even classify it as one.
"That is only natural since it is his birthday and she is his wife." Neriah pointed out, hoping he would let her be now.
"But that does not answer the question of why you are not on the dance floor." He tilted his head and pressed on, much to Neriah’s annoyance. How the heck was she supposed to get this man off her back!
"As you can see, it takes two to do a dance and I do not know if you are unaware since you seem to be a prodigal son and all, but your brother, my husband is away in battle and is yet to return. I cannot dance alone." She hardly ever had reason to address Barak as ’Her Husband’ in fact she could not remember many times where she had said it out loud. But saying it now stirred some sort of possessiveness in her.
"Ah, but look over there, even our dear little Barni is dancing alone and the twins are..." He paused and tilted his head, "I do not know what the twins are doing but I believe they will call it a dance."
Ahhhhhh!
She wanted to scream and tell him, do not disturb me I just want to stand here on my own!
"And besides, what is a little brother if he cannot assist his older brother when he is away? I shall accompany you to the dance floor in his stead." He said with a big bright smile and his hand stretched out and Neriah was completely speechless.
"Raknar, do not tease her. That one has not only brother but mother and father wrapped around her finger. They will have your neck if they catch you flirting with her." Rakima’s voice sounded from behind her and Neriah sighed with much relief as she had completely forgotten that the lady still stood behind her.
It was certain she could not handle the man on her own. At least not without cursing out loud.
"You make me sound bad little sister. I just wanted to get to know my sister-in-law better before brother comes." Raknar laughed. "He won’t let me anywhere near her when he returns." He shrugged.
"Pay him no mind Neriah. He is always like this, but he is really harmless." Rakima said with a smile that Neriah noticed had not wiped off her face since her brother showed face in the party. She could tell Rakima indeed cared for her brothers. So much so that she was talking to her so freely like this.
"Come on sister-in-law, from what I have heard, this will be your first tragonian ball. It will really break my heart that you end it without doing the most common thing in the ball. Dance!" He was earnest. And so damn persistent. So persistent that Neriah felt she should not resist any longer.
"Come on, have your first dance with your dear brother-in-law." Neriah stared at his outstretched hand and then her eyes went to the king and queen who were dancing, even the young princes were dancing.
But she really didn’t feel like it... but he was right. This was her first ball. But...
"And why would she dance with you on her first ball, when her husband is right here?" a sudden light filled her eyes, her chest tingled and her neck flushed as slowly, the sounds from the Orchestra was lost in her head, her ears that had turned red could only pick up the sound of his footsteps. They sounded louder than any any other thing in the room.
The only thing that managed to be louder than his footsteps was the sound of her heartbeat, her crazy heart pounding hard on her chest...
Slowly, her neck and head turned, her lashes lifted and her eyes met his own. He had reached her side, looking as tall, huge and his skin hard darkened a little, but all around he looked as majestic as ever.
Her lips parted, "Y_" she paused as she heard her voice. It wasn’t pleasant. It sounded crooked.
She swallowed and cleared her throat silently before opening up her lips again, "You are back." were the words that come out as she stared up at her husband and the corner of his lips lifted as he nodded and said...
"Hm, I’m back."
